Arson Arrest

On November 4, 2022, at approximately 2:26AM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office was notified via 911 of a barn on fire at 1584 335th Street, Salem, Iowa. The Salem Fire Department, along with other fire departments responded to assist, as the fire spread to fields nearby.

At approximately 7:44AM, (November 4, 2022), the Henry County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a rekindling at the fire scene and the Salem Fire Department responded again.

The fire was reported as suspicious and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Iowa State Fire Marshall’s Office subsequently investigated.

As a result of the investigation, James Cleere, 18 of Salem, Iowa, was arrested and charged with Arson 2nd (class C felony).

Evelyn Jean Garmoe (final arrangements)

Evelyn Jean Garmoe, 92, of New London, died Monday, November 7, 2022 at New London Specialty Care.  She was born August 31, 1930 in Burlington, Iowa to Clarence John and Dora Phyllis Harper Weigert.  She was a graduate of New London High School and a member of the New London United Methodist Church.

Evelyn spent 67 years working for the New London Journal, beginning at age 16 and later becoming office manager and editor retiring in 2015.  She loved visiting with the townspeople and writing the news for the paper.

She enjoyed watching football, being with her grandkids and family, talking with friends, playing bingo, collecting elephants, and loved her cat Patches.

Survivors include her daughter Debbie Titus of Burlington; grandchildren Tara (Andy) Sterba of Riverside and Tony Titus of Maple Park, Illinois; and great-grandchildren Cecelia and Alex Sterba and Gianna Titus.  Her parents and brother Richard preceded her in death.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Elliott Chapel, New London.  Visitation will begin at noon with the family receiving friends beginning at 1:00 until the time of the service.  Burial will follow at Burge Cemetery, New London.  A memorial has been established for New London Fire and Rescue.  Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.

Crash Details

Mount Pleasant Police released the details of a single vehicle crash that occurred November 4.  Police were called to the 800 block of South Jefferson Street where a van had gone off the roadway.  When officers arrived on the scene that found the van in the ditch with a light pole on top of it and the driver unresponsive.  The driver was identified as Adam Heckenberg.  It was believed he experienced a medical episode that caused him to black out while negotiating a curve in the street.  The van hit a light pole when it went off street. This brought down a power line. Heckenberg was taken by ambulance to Henry County Health Center.

Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Leaf Pickup in MP

The City of Mount Pleasant’s FREE LEAF COLLECTION is scheduled for the week of November 14th. All leaves must be bagged and placed at the curb on your designated trash day. Please separate bags of trash from bags of leaves.
This collection is open to all residents, so if your trash is picked up by a service other than the City and you do not know the day of City pickup in your neighborhood, you should call City Hall at 385-1470.

Sports, November 8th

High School Football

The WACO Warriors will play Newell-Fonda tomorrow, November 9th, at 1 pm with KILJ on the call with pregame at 12:45. Remsen St. Mary’s will play Lenox after the WACO game to decide who will play in the State Championship game.

The only team left in Mt. Pleasant’s district is North Scott as they will play Xavier at 7 pm on Thursday, November 10th.

The Mt. Pleasant football team held their annual football banquet Sunday night giving out awards to players from the Freshman, JV, and Varsity teams. The night was also an opportunity to pass the torch along from the seniors to the juniors to step up as the new leaders of the team. Coach Striegel was excited about the upcoming class.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The men’s and women’s wrestling teams competed at the Luther Hill Invitational last weekend with the women finishing in 2nd place at the event. Alaina Sunlin, ranked 6th in her weight class, finished in 3rd place with her only loss of the day coming against Emma Cochran, who is ranked 5th. Faith Cole finished in 3rd place as she is ranked 9th in her weight class. Destiny Campbell, coming in ranked 15th in her weight class, beat the 8th ranked wrestler to earn 1st place. Adaugo Nwachukwu continued her dominance with a first-place finish with Emily Neumann finishing in 3rd in the same weight class. The women will be back in action at William Penn University at 7 pm on November 10th.

The men’s wrestling team finished in 8th place with Brent Ward and Isaac Boucher both finishing in 2nd place, and Lane Scorpil earning 4th place on the day. The men’s team will be wrestling tomorrow at 6 pm against St. Ambrose University and Cornell College.

The men’s basketball team will play Culver-Stockton College at home tonight, November 8th, at 7:30 pm.

The women’s basketball team’s next game will be tomorrow, November 9th, at home against Mount Mercy University at 5:30 pm. They are currently 2-1 on the season.

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams will have Logan Lucas and Lily Garnsey run at the 2022 National Championship meet November 18th with the men running at 8:30 am and the women at 9:30 am. At the conference championship, the Champions of Character awards were given out for the Tigers with Kenny Tucker being the male recipient and Lily Garnsey the female recipient.

Iowa Wesleyan to Host Annual Service of Lessons & Carols December 3 & 4

Iowa Wesleyan University invites the community to celebrate the holiday season with the time-honored tradition of Lessons & Carols, a service highlighting the students of the Iowa Wesleyan Music Department and music performers within the Southeast Iowa Community.

This sacred service, entitled “Let My Love Be Heard,” will be held live on Saturday, December 3, and Sunday, December 4, 2022, at 7 PM in the Iowa Wesleyan University Chapel Auditorium in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. This signature holiday service will feature performances from The Mount Pleasant Chorale, IW Choir, Primae Voces, SEISO Chamber Orchestra, and more.

Join us as we celebrate the holiday season with traditional and contemporary choral and instrumental music paired with scriptures that recount the Christmas story.

“Advent, and the Christmas season, is one of the most special times of the year. Lessons & Carols captures the essence of this beauty and wraps it in a musical gift,” said Blair Buffington, Director of Choral Activities and Artistic Director of the event. “Our Iowa Wesleyan students, faculty, and staff work very hard and look forward to making this gift to the community.”

This event is free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be taken at the end of the service to benefit the students in the IW Music Department.

Truck Crash

On November 5th, at approximately 12:56 A.M., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a single vehicle accident in the 2300-grid of 120th Street in rural Winfield. Tyler Unternahrer of Wayland, was driving Eastbound on 120th Street when the vehicle drifted off the shoulder. Tyler then overcorrected and lost control in the wet gravel, causing the truck to slide into the north ditch. Tyler was transported to Henry County Hospital by a family member with non-life threatening injuries. As a result of the investigation, Tyler was issued a summons for Reckless Driving and a citation for Failure To Maintain Control.
