Micaiah Samuel Mullen

Micaiah Samuel Mullen, 34, was born on June 13, 1988 to Willie Louis and Betty Jean (Barney) Mullen in Mt. Pleasant (Henry Co.) Iowa. The was the youngest of three children. Micaiah departed this life on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at the Henry County Health Center.

Micaiah accepted Christ at the age of six at Second Baptist Church, (now Second Baptist Ministries) in Mt. Pleasant, under the leadership of the Reverend Tony Campbell. Micaiah maintained his membership there.

Micaiah received elementary education at the Owls Nest, Saunders and Van Allen Elementary Schools and Mt. Pleasant Community Middle School. He was a 2006 graduate of Mt. Pleasant Community High School. Micaiah attended and earned credits in the field of Culinary Art from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids and continued studies at Southeastern Community College in Burlington.

During his early years, he played Little League Baseball. Later, he participated in football, basketball and track. He enjoyed playing pool and traveling. Micaiah’s favorite sport was basketball, which he played until ninth grade. He was an avid fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Cowboys.

He enjoyed working at Wal Mart and at Sirloin Stockade as a chef. However, his employment was short-lived due to medical concerns.

Micaiah was a family-oriented person. He was loving, caring, gentle, polite and thoughtful, always thinking of the “underdog.” Micaiah loved his daughter Vanessa very much and took pride in all her achievements. He loved his brothers, Willie and Cedrick, and often expressed a desire to go on a trip with them.

Micaiah was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother – Leanna Barney Collins (James); paternal grandparents  Sam & Mary Mullen; uncles – Sam Mullen, Jr., Jake Mullen, George Mullen, Howard Collins, James Collins, Jr., Albert Bennett, Sr and Walter Collins and aunts – Frances Mullen, Mary (Mullen) Hairston, Gloria Collins and Lena Collins.

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Vanessa Skye Woodsmall and her mother Jessica (who was Micaiah’s special friends and longtime classmate), both of Burlington; his parents – Willie & Betty Mullen of Mt. Pleasant; 2 brothers, their wives and children – Willie & Yolanda Barney, Nehemiah & Priscilla of Omaha, NE and Cedric & Bridget Mullen, Avery & Connor of Plymouth, MN; aunt – Delores Bennett and her children Betinia (Darryl) Wade, Carolyn (Robert) Hill, Albert (Tia) Bennett, Timmy (Franchester) Bennet and Michael Bennett, all of Greenville, MS; uncle – Timmy (Myrna) Collins and their children Christopher (Vanessa) Collins, Antonio Collins and Miriam Collins Holms, all of Salinas, CA; uncle – Curtis (Stephanie) Barney and daughter Naudia of North Liberty, IA; uncle – Fleming Mullen & children Pat & Fleming; uncle – Jerome Mullen & his children – Jerome Jr., Valarie, Treva, Germerish of New York; uncle – Herbert (Ernestine) Mullen of Demopolis, AL; aunts Mabel Mullen & Minnie Scott of Demopolis, AL; aunt Ann Mullen and daughter Ina (Darrin) Hawkins of Washington, DC; aunt Diane (Dwayne) Hogan and children Jermaine (Piper) Hogan, Mariah (Jeremy) McMorris and Aaron (Maria) Hogan of Snellville, GA; aunt – Juanita Collins and daughter Brianna of Greenville, MS as well as a host of friends.

The funeral service for Micaiah will be 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 22nd at the Iowa Wesleyan University Chapel. The Reverend Tony Campbell of the Second Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant, will officiate. The funeral will be livestreamed on the Kimzey Funeral Home Facebook Page. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Visitation will be from 12 Noon to 8 PM on Thursday, October 20th and Friday, October 21st at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. Micaiah’s family will be present to receive friends on Friday from 4-7 PM.

Beaulah M. Manning

Beaulah M. Manning, 90, of rural Mt. Pleasant passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

According to her wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Burial will be held in the Cottonwood Cemetery rural Wayland at a later time.

Great River President & CEO Resigns

West Burlington, Iowa, October 14, 2022 – Matt Wenzel, President and CEO of Great River Health System, has tendered his resignation.  “I am pleased to have led Great River Health from one hospital to three hospital campuses during my five years as president and CEO. I wish all the best for Great River Health and continue to believe in the team that will lead the health system forward,” said Mr. Wenzel.

The Board of Directors wishes to thank Matt for his leadership through very challenging times in the health care industry and for having the organization positioned well for the future.  The board wishes Matt success in his career.

The Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Michael McCoy as acting CEO. Matt will be available for consultation during the transition period.

HCHC Diabetes Education Two-Day Class offered October 24 and 25

Mount Pleasant, Iowa, [October 4, 2022] – Henry County Health Center’s Diabetes Team will be offering a two-day diabetes education class Monday, October 24 and Tuesday, October 25. This program is open to anyone who has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

The class will be conducted from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. each day in Suite 25 at HCHC.  Directions will be given when you call HCHC’s Diabetes Education Center at 319-385-6518 to register.  Please register by Friday, October 21.

Topics include meal planning; exercise; personal goals; eye disease; glucose monitoring; foot, skin and dental care; complications of diabetes; explanation of diabetes; medications; and behavior modifications. There will be time for questions.

The purpose of the program is to provide people who have diabetes and their families the latest information regarding the disease and to help them become aware that diabetes education is a lifelong process.

The HCHC Diabetes Education Center has earned Iowa State Certification.  It has also been awarded Recognition from the American Diabetes Association, which assures that it has met the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs.  HCHC’s Diabetes Education team offers Certified Diabetes Educators through the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators.

People with diabetes face a shortened life span and also suffer from many preventable diabetes-related complications, such as lower extremity amputations, end-stage renal disease, blindness, long-term reduction in activity, and cardiovascular disease. Many of these diabetes-related complications can be reduced or prevented through treatment and appropriate self-management.

Van Buren County Candidate Forum

October 19 Rural Voters will have the opportunity to have their questions answered by the candidates for the Board of Supervisors and County Treasurer during a Candidate Forum, that will be sponsored by the Van Buren County Farm Bureau. 7pm at the Roberts Memorial Building, 20497 Hwy 1 North, Keosauqua, IA 52565. This event will be held live in person. The County Candidates Forum will focus on Rural Issues facing Van Buren County with all Supervisor and Treasurer Candidates invited to attend. This event is free and open to all residents of Van Buren County. This forum will not be a debate, but an opportunity for community members to meet each candidate, which will give their positions on rural issues. Questions from the community are encouraged and will be accepted by email at vanburen.county@ifbf.org, or by written submission during the forum. Approved questions will be read to the candidates by a moderator. Questions considered one-sided or threatening will not be used. The Van Buren County Farm Bureau understands that harvest is quickly approaching but hopes farmers will be able to take the time to learn more about the candidates for Van Buren County Supervisor and Treasurer.

Sports, October 14th

High School Football

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers are looking for their first win of the season as they will travel to play Clinton tonight, October 14th, at 7:30 pm. KILJ will be on the call with pregame scheduled to start at 7:15.

WACO will be looking to spoil Tri-County’s senior night, looking to end the regular season with a perfect record. Kickoff scheduled for 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will be looking to bounce back at home tonight against English Valleys at 7 pm, as they are still fighting for a playoff spot.

New London will be looking to end the season on a road win against HLV tonight, game scheduled to start at 7 pm.

Other games in Mt. Pleasant’s district, Burlington will be celebrating senior night against Iowa City Liberty and North Scott will be on the road against Fort Madison, both games scheduled to start at 7:30 pm. Other games in the area, Washington will be at home against Fairfield, Keokuk will travel to play West Burlington, and Central Lee will travel to play Centerville all of them scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.

High School Cross Country

The Mount Pleasant Panthers ran the Southeast Conference Cross Country Meet at Fairfield last night. The girls team finished in 4th place in the 5K run with a total time of 1:54:51. Emma Welcher was the top finisher for the Panthers with a time of 21:42 that placed her in 11th place. Isabelle Meador was next as she finished in 20th with a time of 22:36. Audrey Lord finished in 29th, Aliya Graber in 33rd, Ella McNamee in 36th, Jayden Housh finished in 41st, and Natalie Parrot rounded out the day for the Panthers in 48th.  Washington was the top team with Avery Rump of Fort Madison finishing in 1st with a time of 19:56. In the girls 3200-meter run, Mt. Pleasant finished in first with a time of 1:09:18. Charley Huebner, Isabella Dodds, and Quintrie Lee finished in the pole positions, respecitvely, with Huebner running the top time of 13:09. Linzy Striegel, Jayden Yoder, and Pru Callaway finished in 9th, 10th, and 11th, respectively.

The boy’s team for the 5K race finished in 4th out of 6 teams with a time of 1:32:12. Ben Carthey and Jude Dykstra both ran great races finishing in the top 10 with Carthey finishing in 2nd with a time of 17:04 and Dykstra running a time of 17:51, which gave him 8th place. Tyler Johnson and Jonathon Hough finished in 24th and 25th, respectively. Coleman Mowery finished in 29th, Isaac Rynders in 31st, Gabe Feldmann in 34th, and Ben Meador and Gavin Slagel finished in 41st and 42nd, respectively. Washington had the best team time and top runner with Micah Rees running a 16:40. For the 3200-meter run, Jalen Tolander was the top finisher for the Panthers in 18th place with a time of 13:37. Oliver Rynders was next in 21st, and Asher Vine and Kyler Copeman rounded out the day for the Panthers finishing in 42nd and 43rd, respectively. Both teams will be competing at Washington for the 3A District Cross Country race.

High School Volleyball

Holy Trinity Catholic will be competing in the Knoxville Tournament tomorrow before they get ready for their first game of the Regional on October 17th, against Wayne at 7 pm.

The WACO Warriors will be back in action October 17th to face off against Melcher-Dallas at home at 7 pm to start their journey in the regional playoffs.

Winfield-Mt. Union will play Twin Cedars October 17th at 7 pm at home to start regional play.

The Mount Pleasant Panthers start their postseason next Tuesday, October 18th, when they travel to play Burlington.

New London will be going against Hillcrest Academy Monday, October 17th, at 7 pm to start their journey through regionals.

Burlington Notre Dame gets a first-round bye to start their regional play as they chase for their 3rd state championship in a row. Central Lee will play Davis County to open their regional play October 17th at 7 pm.

Elementary Basketball Tournament

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The Tiger volleyball team fell in straight sets to Waldorf last night by scores of 25-17, 25-20, and 25-11. Bethany Williams led the Tigers in kills with 6 on the night. Malie DaMate led the team in assists with 9 and tallied 4 kills. The Tigers are now 4-17 with a 2-1 conference record as they will be competing tomorrow in a Tri Match with game one starting at 12 pm against Manhattan Christian College and game two scheduled for 2 pm against Cottey College.

The women’s soccer team’s next game is tonight at 5 pm against conference foe Bellevue University, on the road.

The men’s soccer team will be looking for back-to-back wins tonight against Bellevue University in a conference matchup at 7 pm in Cedar Rapids.

Men’s and women’s cross-country will be running today as they compete at the Indian Hills Invitational at 4 pm.

The Tiger football team will look to bounce back tomorrow, October 15th, as they face off with Valley City State University at 1 pm.

1984 – George ‘Sparky’ Anderson became the first baseball manager to win 100 games and a World Series in both leagues.

2000 – Neil Parry had his right leg severely broken while playing on kickoff coverage during a game at UTEP. Nine days later his lower leg was amputated. Three years later he returned to football on one play with a prosthetic leg.

Chamber To Host Candidates Forum

The November election is quickly approaching, and the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce is giving you an opportunity to hear from one of the most highly contested races. Citizens are invited to attend the forum on Tuesday, October 18 at 6:30 pm in the Social Hall at Iowa Wesleyan University. The forum that evening will include candidates Mike Heaton (D) and Jeff Shipley (R) who are vying for to represent District 87 in the Iowa State House of Representatives.

“This is a very important race for our community, and we want to give citizens the opportunity to learn more about those candidates before they go to the polls” said Kristi Perry, Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance.
