High School Volleyball

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers captured their fifth win of the season after winning the fifth set on the road against Keokuk. It was a comeback effort after the Chiefs won the first and third sets, but the Panthers battled back and won the fourth set 25-23 and dominated the last set 15-5. Mount Pleasant’s next game will be next Tuesday, September 27th, at 7:15 pm.

Pool play starts tomorrow, September 22nd, for the Southeast Iowa Super Conference. In pool one it is West Burlington, who is the one seed, Mediapolis (8th), Central Lee (9th), and Lone Tree (16th). Pool two will be hosted by Notre Dame with the Nikes holding the two seed. Wapello (7th), Danville (10th), Columbus (15th), and Louisa-Muscatine (17th) will be the other teams in pool 2.  Pool 3 will be played at Harmony High School with Van Buren being the host. New London highlights it as they come in as the third seed, but WACO will be there as the sixth seed. Van Buren County comes in as the eleventh seed and Hillcrest Academy is the fourteenth seed. Winfield-Mt. Union, the fourth seed, will host the fourth pool with Holy Trinity Catholic coming in as the fifth seed, along with Highland (12th), and Pekin (13th). The winners from each pool will advance to the Championship played on Saturday.

The Wolves are led by a trio of seniors in Keely Malone, who has 303 assists on the season and the school record for career assists, Melina Oepping, who leads the team in kills with 115, and Bradie Buffington, who is second on the team in kills with 87.

The Warriors count on Ellah Kissell and Grace Coble to get the job done as Kissell leads the team in kills with 96 and Coble leads the team with 244 assists and contributes another 56 kills to the stat line.

The Tigers lean on Eliana Manning and Natalie Burden, the latter leads the Tigers in kills with 104 and the former has racked up 224 assists through their nine matches.

Holy Trinity Catholic fresh off a win against Burlington in straight sets is led by the Bendlages as Mary Kate leads the team in kills with 126, while Anna has tallied 303 assists through 14 matches.

Burlington Notre Dame counts on Gabby Deery who has 293 kills on the year and West Burlington leans on Sophia Armstrong who has 235 kills on the season.

High School Football Recap

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers travel to play Fort Madison this Friday, September 23rd. The Panthers will lean on their passing attack to bring down the Bloodhounds talented defense that is allowing less than ten points a contest.

WACO celebrates Homecoming this week and they look to continue their perfect season when they face off against the New London Tigers at 7 pm this Friday.

Winfield-Mt. Union will be celebrating Homecoming this week against a 3-1 Lone Tree team at 7 pm this Friday.

Washington will look to right the ship against Grinnell this Friday for their Homecoming game and Fairfield will look to spoil Keokuk’s Homecoming at 7:30 pm this Friday.

High School Cross Country

The Mt. Pleasant Invitational will be run tomorrow, Thursday, September 22nd.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The Tigers volleyball team dominated their way to their second win of the season as they beat Faith Baptist Bible College in straight sets. Malie DaMate was the leading force for the Tigers as she led the team in kills with 7 and assists with 15. Their next game is this Friday, September 23rd, when they travel to face off with Culver-Stockton College at 7 pm.

Men’s and Women’s golf will be participating in the Simpson Fall Invite this morning. They are fresh off a dominant outing by both teams as the women’s team won the Monmouth Invitational led by Aubrey Duncan who got her second collegiate victory, first with the Tigers. The men’s team got second overall led by Brevin Wilson and Trace White who tied for 2nd overall with a score of 149 over the 36 holes.

Both men’s and women’s soccer fell yesterday to Harris-Stowe University as the women’s team was blanketed 7-0 and the men’s team fell 1-0. The women’s team will have to bounce back quick as they play tonight against Mount Mercy University at Mediapolis High School at 7 pm. The men will have to wait until Saturday to play Waldorf at 4 pm.

Van Buren County Voting Information

Public notice is hereby given that Van Buren County, Iowa, will be hosting two satellite voting stations for the upcoming General Election.  The location and date for each satellite voting station will be as follows:

  • Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 12:00 noon to 6:00 PM, in the Farmington Community Center, 204 S 4th St, Farmington, Iowa, 52626.
  • Saturday, November 5, 2022, from 12:00 noon to 6:00 PM, in the Milton American Legion Center, 324 N Main St, Milton, Iowa, 52570.

Ballot styles will be available for ALL eligible voters of Van Buren County.  Voter registration forms will also be available for new registrations and changes to registrations in Van Buren County.

PLEASE NOTE: If a voter decides to vote at a satellite voting station, he/she will be completing an absentee ballot which will be securely stored at the Van Buren County auditor’s office until it is counted on election day.

Linda Lou Barton

Linda Lou Barton, 78, of Salem passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the New London Specialty Care Center.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 3 p.m. at the Salem South Cemetery with Rev. John Chaplin officiating.  Friends may call from 2 until 7 p.m. on Friday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.  The family will not be present.  Memorials may be directed to the Salem Congregational Church in her memory.

School Resource Officer Discussion

The Mount Pleasant School District and the City are discussing a resource officer for the district.  During a recent city council personnel and finance committee meeting the possibility of using a Mount Pleasant police officer was discussed. Apparently, the school board financing committee expressed a willingness to pay 70% of that officer’s salary. There are some union questions but the idea would be for the officer to spend  7:30 am to 3:45 pm, 175 days out of the year in the schools when students are in class.  The rest of the time would be regular patrol with the police department. Police Chief Lyle Murray said the number of calls to the Middle School and High School warrant putting a resource officer in place.

Jerry Leo Talbott

Jerry Leo Talbott, 80, of rural Mt. Union, died Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born August 30, 1942 in Burlington, he was the son of Leo Earl and Mary Virginia Gabeline Talbott.

He graduated from Yarmouth High School and was enlisted with the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1964.

On September 2, 1962 Jerry married Lila June Jacobs in Larkensburg, KS.

Jerry was a farmer and a truck driver. He drove for Aldi and also hauled grain for many years. Jerry was a member of New London United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and was a member of the United Methodist Men. Jerry was a volunteer with RSVP in Mt Pleasant where he enjoyed driving clients to their appointments. He was a previous board member on the Iowa State Board of Cosmotology. Jerry helped former Iowa Governor Vilsack’s wife Christie with serving tea parties at the Governor’s mansion in Des Moines. He was playfully known as “The Mayor of Iowa”, and he really enjoyed helping people.

Survivors include his wife June of Mt. Union; daughters Jeanna (Douglas) Barcus of Mt. Union, Janelle Michels of Grand Ledge, MI and Jolene (Blake) Hazen of Grand Ledge, MI; grandchildren Natalie (Austin) Farver of Baxter, IA, Nicole Baker of Newton, IA and Olivia Hazen of Grand Ledge, MI; one great grandchild Willow; Brother Richard (Mary) Talbott of Wapello, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service for Jerry will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 24th at Lunning Chapel with the Reverend Matt Miller officiating. The family will receive friends Friday September 23rd at Lunning Chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Military rites will be performed by the United States Air Force. Interment will be at Trinity Cemetery Mt. Union, IA.

Memorials have been established for New London United Methodist Church and Yarmouth Fire Department.
