High School Volleyball

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers are back in action, tonight, September 20^th, looking for their fifth win of the season as they travel to play Keokuk.

The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves, WACO Warriors, Holy Trinity Catholic Crusaders, and New London Tigers will be competing in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Tournament this Thursday, September 22nd. West Burlington and Burlington Notre Dame will also be competing, which makes four teams in the tournament ranked in the Iowa High School Volleyball rankings compiled by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Wolves are led by a trio of seniors in Keely Malone, who has 303 assists on the season and the school record for career assists, Melina Oepping, who leads the team in kills with 115, and Bradie Buffington, who is second on the team in kills with 87.

The Warriors count on Ellah Kissell and Grace Coble to get the job done as Kissell leads the team in kills with 96 and Coble leads the team with 244 assists and contributes another 56 kills to the stat line.

The Tigers lean on Eliana Manning and Natalie Burden, the latter leads the Tigers in kills with 104 and the former has racked up 224 assists through their nine matches.

Holy Trinity Catholic fresh off a win against Burlington in straight sets is led by the Bendlages as Mary Kate leads the team in kills with 126, while Anna has tallied 303 assists through 14 matches.

High School Football Recap

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers travel to play Fort Madison this Friday, September 23^rd. The Panthers will lean on their passing attack to bring down the Bloodhounds talented defense that is allowing less than ten points a contest.

WACO celebrates Homecoming this week and they look to continue their perfect season when they face off against the New London Tigers at 7 pm this Friday. The Tigers are currently riding a three game win streak.

Winfield-Mt. Union will be celebrating Homecoming this week against a 3-1 Lone Tree team at 7 pm this Friday.

Washington will look to right the ship against Grinnell this Friday for their Homecoming game and Fairfield will look to spoil Keokuk’s Homecoming at 7:30 pm this Friday.

High School Cross Country

The Mt. Pleasant Invitational has been postponed from today to Thursday, September 22^nd, due to the heat expected today.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The Tigers volleyball team plays tonight, September 20^th, at 7 pm as they face off against Faith Baptist Bible College on the road looking for their second win of the season.

The Tigers football team sees their second North Star Athletic Association player of the week for the season as Tyler Ball is named Special Teams Player of the Week. He tallied over 100 yards returning the football including a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown during the third quarter. Ball leads the Tigers in all-purpose yards and the Tigers lead the NSAA in punt return total yards and punt return yard average. They will travel to play Dakota St. University next Saturday, September 24^th, at 4 pm.

The men’s soccer team get their first Continental Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week in Richard Arch as he was named Offensive Player of the Week. He has scored four goals in his last two matches, both wins for the Tigers. Both the men’s and women’s teams will play today against Harris-Stowe University. The women’s team will play at 1 pm and the men’s team will play at 3 pm.

High School Football Recap

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers fall to 0-4 after their loss at home to the West Burlington Falcons, 30-20. After scoring the first points of the game and the second half, the Panthers were only down one point early in the third quarter. Unfortunately, the rushing attack of the Falcons was too much to stop as they scored the next 16 points. Jacob Richtman threw for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns, going to Wyatt Woodsmall, Payton Hagans, and Bowen Davis. They travel to play Fort Madison this Friday, September 23^rd.

WACO remains undefeated as they handled Iowa Valley, 54-26, last Friday on the road. Simeon Reichenbach rushed for 180 yards and 4 touchdowns in the dominant performance, aided by Isaac Oswald’s 2 touchdowns through the air.

New London has now won three games in a row after dismantling the English Valleys Bears, 58-12. Dom Lopez tallied 168 yards through the air and 3 touchdowns with Blaise Porter adding 91 yards on the ground with 3 touchdowns. The Tigers will travel to play the Warriors of Waco this Friday at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union ran away with the game after scoring 24 points in the second quarter. Cole Milks threw for 3 touchdowns, and Cam Buffington ran for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns. They will be celebrating Homecoming this week against a 3-1 Lone Tree team at 7 pm this Friday.

Fort Madison demolished Washington 37-7 and Fairfield defeated Knoxville in a dramatic 29-28 finish.

High School Volleyball

New London lost both games this weekend at the North Mahaska Invite to Pella Christian, winning 1 set out of 5 possible.

Mt. Pleasant went 1-3 over the weekend at the Ottumwa Invitational, defeating Washington in their first game 2 sets to 1, winning in the third set 15-13. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Burlington, and Albia defeated the Panthers in straight sets.  The Panthers will be back in action, tomorrow, September 20^th, at 7:15 pm.

The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves will be competing in the SEISC Tournament next Thursday, September 22nd.

The Holy Trinity Catholic Crusaders next game will be against Fort Madison tonight. Game time at 4 pm opening the Holy Trinity Tournament.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The Tigers volleyball team captured their first win of the year in straight sets over Cottey College to open the second day of the UHSP tournament, winning the sets 25-15, 25-21, and 25-22. Emma Lincoln dominated leading the team in kills with 11, followed by Malie DaMate with 8 kills and adding 19 assists. Bethel College proved to be a tough match as they beat the Tigers in straight sets by scores of 25-19, 26-24, and 25-18. Madison Saia had 6 kills and DaMate added 13 assists to her tournament total. Tomorrow, September 20^th, at 7 pm marks the next game for the Tigers when they face off against Faith Baptist Bible College on the road.

The Tigers football team is back to .500 for the first time since the 2017 season after dismantling Finlandia University 55-0. The defense dominated the Lions, allowing negative 107 yards. Major Niccum led the way with 2 sacks, a deflection, and a 69-yard fumble return for a touchdown. They will travel to play Dakota St. next Saturday, September 24^th, at 4 pm.

The men’s soccer team has now won two straight, as they defeated the William Woods Owls, 4-1. Richard Arch scored two goals on the game. The women’s team lost to the Owls, 2-1 with Ana Medina-Suazo scoring the lone goal. Both teams will play tomorrow against Harris-Stowe University. Women will play at 1 pm and the men will play at 3 pm.

The Tigers football team moves to 2-2 on the season after dismantling Finlandia University 55-0. As the rain fell throughout the entire afternoon, it was a dominant defensive effort that led the Tigers and even led to the first touchdown of the game as Major Niccum recovered a fumble and took it 69-yards to open up the scoring. Overall, the defense held the Lions to -107 yards on the day, allowed only 2 first downs, forced four turnovers, and had 11 sacks. Zach Chevalier threw for 147 yards and four touchdowns, with two of those going to Jaden Harris, and the other two going to Asaivien McWilliams and Bryan Battle. Gavin Esquivel tossed a 9-yard touchdown pass late in the game to JC Gill, while Lucas Mosqueda and Travis Fossum added one field goal apiece. Niccum and Jerich Givens led the team in tackles with 8, while Niccum added two sacks, three-and-a-half tackles for a loss, and a deflection. Demitrius Boyd led the team in sacks with two-and-a-half. The Tigers will be on the road to play Dakota St. next Saturday at 4 pm.

The men’s and women’s soccer team traveled to play William Woods University with the men now having won two games straight as the defeated the Owls 4-1. Richard Arch scored two goals on the game with Francisco Morsila and Francisco Javier Saldana each adding one goal. Alvaro Morera saved 8 shots on 9 attempts. The women’s team falls to 2-4 on the season as they fell to the Owls 2-1. The Owls got their first scoring attempt on a penalty kick after a handball call in the penalty box and they were able to connect. They added another goal in the second half before Ana Medina-Suazo scored in the 89th minute to give us the final score 2-1. The men’s and women’s teams travel to Harris-Stowe University on September 20th to take on the Hornets. Women will play at 1 pm, while the men will play at 3 pm.
