Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant Baseball was defeated by Marion 15-1 Friday evening in their first-round game of the Class 3A Substate 5 tournament. The loss effectively ends the Panthers season. The Panthers finish their 2022 campaign with an overall record of 9-19. MP Head Coach Brent Broeker says they are holding their heads high. “We were 11 runs from being a much higher seed. I told the boys to not hang their heads. Even though our record doesn’t show it, we were better this year and hopefully they’ll stay positive and have a good year next year.” Marion advances to take on Fort Madison tonight at 7:00 PM at Mount Mercy University.

New London

New London Baseball defeated Notre Dame 5-0 Saturday night to claim the District 11 Championship in the Class 1A Substate 6 tournament. Senior Carter Allen was 2 for 2 with a double, a triple, and 1 RBI. Senior Dereck Santiago went 6 full innings allowing no runs on 4 hits with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. The Tigers scored all 5 of their runs in the 4th inning to claim their victory. New London Head Coach Brad Helmerson says he expected a tough game. “We expected a tough game. Those guys are always tough and they’re a completely different team than we saw earlier in the year. Beating a team three times in the same year is not easy anywhere. They give us a tough game every time we see them.” New London is back on the field tomorrow night against Moravia in the State Qualifier game. That game will be at the Ottumwa Sports Complex in Ottumwa and is set to start at 7:00 PM. Live coverage will be available on KILJ.

They are both members of the Lee County 4H Teen Council. The twins graduated this spring from Central Lee High School and are headed to Iowa State University. Trey was a page in the Iowa Legislature. He would like to combine his love of politics and his agriculture knowledge and plans to major in political science and ag policy. Maddie plans to major in agronomy and animal science.
