Supervisors Sub-Committee Updates

Phyllis A. Conner

Phyllis A. Conner, 91, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, June 25, 2022, at the Henry County Health Center.

Phyllis was born November 20, 1930, in Illinois, the daughter of Samuel and Elsie (Ahlers) Lant. She graduated from Media High School and received her training to become a nurse at the Mercy Hospital in Burlington. Phyllis was united in marriage to Edgar Conner on February 20, 1954 in Mount Pleasant. The couple moved to Mount Pleasant where Phyllis worked for over 40 years at the Mount Pleasant Community Hospital and worked as a hospice nurse after she retired. Phyllis was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She loved spending time with her grandchildren doing crossword puzzles and tending to her garden. Phyllis’ cats were her pride and joy and she loved them dearly.

Phyllis is survived by four children, Don (Danna) Conner of Peoria, Arizona; Debra (Michael Miles) Conner, Diane (Kevin) Dunsmore, Doug (Diana Winerich) Conner all of Mount Pleasant; two grandchildren, Whitni and Cody, six great grandchildren, a sister Gladys (Dan) Gulich of Kirkwood, Illinois, and a brother Ivan Lant of Stronghurst, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a granddaughter, a great granddaughter, and three siblings, Carol McGeehan, Max Lant and Catherine Wallace.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 am Saturday, July 9, 2022, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am until service time. Burial will follow in the Forest Home Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association.

Paul Jacobson (final arrangements)

Paul Jacobson, 52, of Mount Pleasant, passed away unexpectedly at the Henry County Health Center on Tuesday, June 21, 2022.

Paul was born August 5, 1969, in Glencoe, Minnesota, the son of Thomas and Janet (Collins) Jacobson. He graduated from Waconia High School and St. Paul Tech Trade School. Paul lived in Minnesota until moving to Fairfield in 2015. On October 24, 2015, Paul was united in marriage to Megan Wenstrand in the Lake of the Ozarks. The couple and their six-year-old son Cadon moved to Mount Pleasant earlier this year. Paul achieved his lifelong dream of owning and operating his own company when he opened Eagle One Printing. He was currently working at Innovairre in production management. Paul was a member of the Swedesburg Lutheran Church, First Lutheran Church in Fairfield and the Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club.

Before moving to Iowa, he was a longtime member of the Island View Golf Club in Waconia, Minnesota, and would make a special trip back every year to play in the Alumni Cup. Paul loved to spend time at his parents’ home in Minnesota, catching walleye on their lake, Little Birch. He was a Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Gophers fan. Paul loved giving his Iowa Hawkeye In- Laws a razz by wearing as much Minnesota Gopher gear as he could to family dinners.

More than anything, Paul loved being Cadon’s “Papa”, and spending time with his family. Paul was a kind man who had a zest for life and loved connecting with people. He was loved by so many and will be deeply missed by all.

Paul is survived by his wife Megan and son Cadon of Mount Pleasant; mother Janet Jacobson of Melrose, Minnesota; two brothers, Thomas (Kimberly) Jacobson of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Chad (Kristine) Jacobson of Plymouth, Minnesota and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Thomas D. Jacobson.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Visitation will follow until 7:00 p.m., the family will greet friends from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. A Visitation will also be held in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, at a later date. Paul will be laid to rest next to his father at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Blue Earth, Minnesota. A memorial fund has been established for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Cadon’s education. www.powellfuneralhomes.com

Nathan J. “Shorty” Fetterman

Nathan J. “Shorty” Fetterman, 88 of Salem passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family.

Shorty’s family will host a Celebration of his Life on Friday, July 1, 2022 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church Parish Hall in Mt. Pleasant. Memorials may be directed to the Faith Lutheran Church of Mt. Pleasant and the Salem Fire and Rescue Association in his memory.

Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant Varsity Softball has a pair of games tonight against Burlington at home. The first game is set for 5:30 PM with the second to follow at 7:30 PM. You can catch live coverage of both games on 105.5 KILJ.

Mount Pleasant Varsity Baseball will have a 2-game set at home with Burlington tonight as well. The first game is set to begin at 5:30 PM with the second to start at 7:30 PM.

New London

New London Varsity Baseball has improved to 20-0 on the season after a 10-0 win over Highland in 5 innings Friday night on Senior Night. Senior Dereck Santiago went 1 for 3 with a double with 2 walks and 2 RBIs. Senior Ryan Richey went 2 for 3 with a triple and 1 RBI. Sophomore Brendan Richey pitched 4 full innings allowing 5 hits, 3 walks, and striking out 3. Tiger Baseball will be back on the field on tonight for a matchup on the road against Burlington Notre Dame. That game is set to start at 7:00 PM.

New London Varsity Softball split a doubleheader Friday. The Tigers defeated Hillcrest Academy by a score of 7-6 in the first game. Highland defeated New London in the second game by a score of 10-0. Tiger Softball will be back on the field on Tuesday night for a 7:00 PM matchup with Van Buren County.

Winfield-Mt. Union

Winfield-Mt. Union Varsity Softball will host Highland tonight at 7:00 PM at the Winfield Softball Field.

Winfield-Mt. Union Varsity Baseball will host Highland tonight at 7:00 PM as well. That game will take place at Winfield Community School.

Iowa Wesleyan Men’s Basketball

Iowa Wesleyan Men’s Basketball will host a 3 vs. 3 basketball tournament on July 4th at Ruble Arena on the Iowa Wesleyan University campus in Mount Pleasant. All ages are welcome from 3rd grade on through adult ages. There will be a DJ playing music during the event and concession stand availability. The cost to enter is $60 per team. Each team must have at least 3 players with a maximum of 4 players. Payment is required before the start of the first game. Checks can be made payable to Iowa Wesleyan Men’s Basketball. Each athlete must sign a waiver of liability and complete a health information form prior to competing. That form can be sent via email (listed below).

The Charlotte Hornets’ hired Steve Clifford for a second stint as the team’s head coach Friday. Clifford’s first run as Charlotte’s head coach was from 2013-2018. Warriors’ assistant coach Kenny Atkinson originally accepted the job but instead decided to stay with Golden State following the NBA Finals victory.

NHL

A champion has been crowned. The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 Sunday night to hoist the Stanley Cup. Colorado’s Cale Makar received the Conn Smythe Trophy which is awarded to the postseason’s most valuable player. It’s Colorado’s first cup since the 2000-2001 season.

Daily Jail Count

Henry County Jail

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Child Revived After Swimming Pool Incident

Emergency crews responded to an address on South Walnut Street in Winfield Saturday night just after 5 pm. Winfield Fire Department confirmed a 4 year old was pulled from a swimming pool at at home at 306 South Walnut. CPR was performed and the child was revived then transported to the University Hospitals in Iowa City for further treatment.
