See How a Solar Powered Home Works

Worried about increasing energy costs?  Interested in solar?  Steve and Mary Hoyer in Salem, Iowa, will participate in the annual Solar Energy Tour, sponsored by ASES (American Solar Energy Society).

Their all-electric home, powered by solar, will be open for visitors this weekend, Saturday and Sunday – October 1st and 2nd, from 1-4:00 in the afternoon.

The house design is a traditional aging-in-place home but emphasizes energy efficiency.  In addition to solar panels, it incorporates a heat pump for heating and cooling, and other features.

Steve commented, “It was important for us to stabilize our energy costs, and I have been amazed — especially since making money by decreasing expenses is not taxable!”  So far, the total cost of energy to run the house, including appliances, has been just under $300 per year.

The address is 202 West Oak Street in Salem, Iowa.  For more information, directions, or to RSVP, contact hoyer.netzero@gmail.com.
