High School Track and Field
Through the rain and the wind, the Denny White Relays commenced yesterday at Mt. Pleasant with the Panthers girls’ team winning with 162 points and the Clear Creek-Amana boys’ team winning with 187 points.
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team picked up a win in the 800 sprint medley with a time of 1 minute and 54 seconds with the team of Courtney Raub, Andi and Alex Scott, and Kynlee White. The team of Meadow Carter, Josie Gilmore, Linzy Striegel, and Rellana Van Deuren raced to a time of 1 minute and 14 seconds to capture first in the 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle. In the 100-meter dash, the Panthers claimed the top three spots with Alex Scott finishing with a time of 12.94 seconds followed by Kiyah Sanders and Andi Scott, respectively. Sanders teamed up with White and the Scott sisters to take first in the 4×200 meter relay. In a similar story of the 100-meter dash, the Panthers claimed the top three spots in the 200-meter dash with White claiming first with a time of 27.09 seconds followed by Bailey Jalas and Raub, respectively. The team of Jalas, White, and the Scott sisters won the 4×100 meter relay. Lastly, Savannah Slobodnik won the discus with a toss of 118 feet and 7 inches.
Staying on the girls’ side, Mediapolis took fifth place with 48 points followed by West Burlington with 44 points. Bryn Wright was the best finisher for the Bulldogs with a second-place finish in the 3000 meter run with a time of 12 minutes and 2 seconds. The Falcons had their distance medley team of Logan Kelley, Ady Lamm, Kaitlyn Kipp, and Hadley Augustine finish in second place with a time of 4 minutes and 47 seconds. Hannah Fruehling also took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 48 seconds. Allison Gruntmeir’s second place finish in the high jump led the way for the Central Lee girls’ team.
On the boys’ side, Mediapolis finished in second place with 173.5 points and Winfield-Mt. Union took fourth place with 104 points. Mt. Pleasant claimed fifth with 84 points, Danvilled finished in seventh place with 81.5 points, Central Lee finished in ninth place, WACO and West Burlington took home 13th and 14th place, respectively, and New London claimed 44 points and 15th place.
The Bulldogs won a total of six events. Mason Lindeen won the 3200-meter run in Class B with a time of 11 minutes and 40 seconds. The team of Solomon Zaugg, Simon Wendel, Owen and Will Schmidgall won the 4×800 meter relay with a time of 8 minutes and 38 seconds, just 0.38 seconds faster than Danville. The distance medley team of Kyler Crow, Noah Schmidgall, Logan Rosas, and Aedin Nelson grabbed first place with a time of 3 minutes and 38 seconds. Henry Luttenegger replaced Rosas in the 4×200 meter relay, which picked up the victory with a time of 1 minute and 34 seconds. The same team won the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 44.59 seconds. Lastly, Grady Gunn raced to a first place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.92 seconds.
Winfield-Mt. Union also captured six event wins, the first being the 800 sprint medley team of August Gieselman, Lane Genkinger, Ty Scorpil, and Sheaden Adams taking first with a time of 1 minute and 40 seconds. Scorpil then raced to the gold in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.64 seconds. Kohlby Newson won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 4 seconds. Gabriel Hemsworth took the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.63 seconds. The team of Adams, Hemsworth, Scorpil, and Newsom won the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 3 minutes and 36 seconds, which was six seconds faster than second place. Lastly, Cam Buffington leapt to a first place finish in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet and 10 inches, while Cole Milks took second with a leap of 20 feet and 3 inches.
Mt. Pleasant’s Jude Dykstra grabbed the lone first place finish of the night for the Panthers with a time of 4 minutes and 55 seconds in the 1600-meter run. Avin Truong had a nice meet with a second place finish in the 200-meter dash and the long jump. Franklin Tousignant also took second in the shot put with a heave of 44 feet and 4.5 inches.
Ayden Doyle of Danville won first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.51 seconds. The Bears also collected five second place finishes over the course of the meet. WACO’s team of Louden Huisenga, Gage Samo, Casey Coakley, and Clayton Miller won the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdle and Husienga took the high jump with a leap of 5 feet and 8 inches. West Burlington’s Landry Haberichter led the way with a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash. Evan Fogarty of Central Lee was the lone first place finisher with a time of 11.8 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Lastly, New London’s Riley Raines raced to a time of 4 minutes and 56 seconds in the 1600-meter run, which won the race by three seconds.
Central Lee will be participating in an Invitational tomorrow, April 13th, at Burlington.
The Van Buren County girls’ and boys’ teams and the New London boys’ teams will hit the road to participate in a meet on Monday, April 15th, at Central Lee.
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ and boys’ teams will host an Invitational on Monday with Mediapolis and Danville making the trip.
The New London, Winfield-Mt. Union, Danville, West Burlington, Mediapolis and WACO girls’ teams will travel to Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, April 16th, for a meet.
The WACO boys’ team will host a meet on Tuesday with Winfield-Mt. Union, New London, Central Lee, and Van Buren County all attending.
High School Soccer
The WACO boys’ team handled business last night against Wapello, winning 8-0. The Warriors will hit the road to take on Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union on Monday, April 15th, at 5 pm.
Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union was swept by Mediapolis last night with the girls’ losing 6-1 and the boys’ falling 8-0. The Wildcats will host Tipton tonight with the girls’ playing first at 5 pm.
The Mediapolis boys’ team will travel to Highland on Monday at 5 pm, while the girls’ team will take on Keokuk on Tuesday, April 16th, at 5 pm.
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team clobbered Keokuk last night 8-0 in a road matchup. Tori Wilson scored four goals and tallied an assist. Charice Auwerda scored a goal and claimed four assists, while Hailey Parrott tallied a goal and an assist. The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will travel to Danville tonight at 6:30 pm and the girls’ team will face off against Burlington on Monday at home.
The Central Lee boys’ team could not overtake Danville as the Bears came out on top last night 3-2. Landan Lowenberg and Dante Merschman had the goals for the Hawks. The girls’ team will travel to West Branch tonight at 5 pm and the boys’ team will celebrate their senior night on Monday against Wapello at 7 pm.
High School Tennis
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team had their meet against Burlington last night postponed due to rain, a makeup date has not been announced yet. The girls’ team will host Burlington Notre Dame on Monday, April 15th, and the boys’ team will travel to Keokuk on Thursday, April 18th.
High School Golf
Winfield-Mt. Union will compete against Highland today on the road.
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team hosted the second SEC meet of the season and Washington extended their lead after shooting a team score of 148 as Fairfield followed behind with a team score of 170 followed by Fort Madison’s 182 and Mt. Pleasant with a 184. The Demons’ were led by the Roths as Roman finished even for the day and Rajan shot a 37. Fairfield’s Sam Weaton also shot even for the course to help lead the charge for the Trojans. Merrick Lamm shot a 47 for the day, which led the Panthers. Fort Madison’s Brady Wade shot a 41 and Keokuk finished with a 198 as Carter Land and Jaydan Thomas each shot a 49.
The Mt. Pleasant girls team traveled to Keokuk last night and exited with the win with a team score of 196 followed by Fort Madison’s 203. The Walderbachs had a nice day for the Panthers with Kylie (43) taking home the best score of the day and Sophia (46) finishing with the third best score. The girls’ team will host their SEC meet on Monday, while the boys’ travel to Washington.
New London will take on Danville at home on Monday.
The WACO boys’ and girls’ teams will host a triangular today with Mediapolis and BGM competing.
Central Lee split their matchup against Van Buren County last night with the girls’ falling to the Warriors 220 to 253 and the boys’ winning 165 to 183. On the girls’ side, Marie Young of Central Lee had the lowest 9-hole score of 59. On the boys’ side, Caleb Larson shot a 40 for the Hawks with Cale Clark and Mylan Lowenberg each finishing with a score of 41. The Central Lee boys’ team will participate in a meet at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Park today, while the girls’ team will travel to Mediapolis on Monday.
Southeastern Community College
SCC baseball will travel to North Iowa Area Community College to compete in a three-game series over the weekend with a doubleheader tomorrow.
The SCC softball team struggled against Kirkwood Community College yesterday, losing game one 6-5 and game two 10-0. The Blackhawks will stay on the road to face off against Iowa Western Community College tomorrow in a doubleheader.
