High School Basketball
WACO hosted Winfield-Mt. Union last night in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North showdown with the Warriors winning the girls game 47-29 and the Wolves taking the boys’ game 46-30 in a night full of fouls and defense.
For the girls’ game, Emma Wagler led the Warriors with 14 points to go along with six steals. Marie Farmer chipped in 13 points with 11 being scored in the second half. Madisen Kellogg was the main source of offense for the Wolves with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals of her own.
The boys’ game featured cold shooting from three-point range and five players fouling out of the contest. Nevertheless, the biggest news of the night was Cam Buffington’s season debut as he was nursing an ankle injury suffered during the football season. Buffington ended up with a game high 15 points in the winning effort. Hunter Hughes led the Warriors with 12 points. Head Coach Klay Edwards talked about how big the win was for his squad.
WACO will host Columbus on Friday, December 8th, with the girls scheduled to play at 6 pm.
Winfield-Mt. Union will host Wapello on Friday with the girls playing at 6 pm and the boys’ game to follow. Coach Edwards is hoping to see more continuity in the offense heading into the matchup.
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team was defeated by Oskaloosa last night 55-17.
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team fell to Xavier at home last night 54-39. Payton Hagans led the Panthers with 23 points. Mt. Pleasant will host Fort Madison in a conference matchup on Friday with the girls’ leading off the night at 6 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will have the call with the pregame show at 5:45 pm.
The Central Lee girls’ team was handled by Burlington Notre Dame last night 69-51. The Nikes were led by Lauren Krieger’s 30 points as Anna Engberg cashed in for 10 points. The Burlington Notre Dame boys’ team followed suit, grounding the Hawks 83-48. Will Hayes led Central Lee with 14 points. The Hawks will take on Van Buren County on Friday with the girls going at 6 pm followed by the boys’ game.
Danville swept New London last night with the girls’ team breezing past the Tigers 71-16, while the boys’ team won a dramatic contest 64-63. New London will host Holy Trinity Catholic on Friday with the girls’ playing at 6 pm.
The Danville girls’ team will clash with Burlington Notre Dame tomorrow at home at 6 pm with the boys’ team taking on the Nikes on Friday at 7:30 pm at home.
The Van Buren County boys’ team lost to West Burlington last night 70-36, while the girls’ team fell to the Falcons 39-30.
The Holy Trinity Catholic girls’ team has now won four games in a row after defeating Mediapolis 59-52 last night. Haley Steffener led the effort for the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Josie Hutcheson collected 10 points and nine rebounds in the losing effort. The Mediapolis boys’ team eked out a 59-57 win over Holy Trinity Catholic last night despite Luke Hellige going off for 31 points in the contest.
Mediapolis will travel to take on West Burlington on Friday with the girls’ scheduled to play at 6 pm and the boys at 7:30 pm.
High School Wrestling
The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will compete on Saturday, December 9th, at Keokuk for an Invitational.
The WACO girls’ team will compete on December 9th at Vinton-Shellsburg for a tournament.
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will compete in a dual against Keokuk at home tomorrow, December 7th.
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will compete in a Triangular at home tomorrow.
The New London boys’ team will travel to Wapello tomorrow to compete in a triangular.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team will travel to Highland for a Triangular tomorrow.
The WACO boys’ will compete in a meet tomorrow at Pekin.
High School Bowling
Mt. Pleasant will face off against Keokuk tomorrow, December 7th.
College Football
Iowa State University will take on Memphis in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis on December 29th at 2:30 pm. The Cyclones defeated Memphis in the 2017 AutoZone Liberty Bowl 21-20.
#20 Iowa will face off against #25 Tennessee in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on January 1st at noon.
College Basketball
The #4 Iowa women’s team will compete against Iowa State tonight at 6 pm in Ames.
The Iowa men’s team will take on Iowa State University tomorrow, December 7th, at 6:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM will be broadcasting the game.
