High School Track and Field

The Mt. Pleasant, Danville, West Burlington, and Mediapolis girls’ teams competed at Central College over the weekend and here are some of the highlights. 

In the 60 meter finals, Mt. Pleasant had Andi Scott finish in 17th place with a time of 8.40 seconds, while Kiyah Sanders grabbed 27th place with a finish of 8.55 seconds. Ady Lamm of West Burlington finished a tick behind Scott with a time of 8.41 seconds. 

In the 60 meter hurdles, Kynlee White of Mt. Pleasant raced to a time of 10.98 seconds, earning her 26th place. 

The 4×800 meter relay was tightly contested with West Burlington clawing past Mediapolis for 7th place with a time of 11 minutes and 15 seconds. 

Andi Scott claimed a top-10 finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.82 seconds, which was good enough for 7th place. Sanders grabbed 22nd place with a time of 28.61 seconds. 

Kaitlyn Kipp of West Burlington paced her way to a 9th place finish in the 1500 meter with a time of 5 minutes and 18 seconds. 

Danville’s Miya Orbiana sprinted to a 4th place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1 minute and 3 seconds, while Josie Hutcheson of Mediapolis finished in 19th place with a time of 1 minute and 7 seconds.  

Danville dominated the 800 meter run with Alaina Gourley capturing a 1st place finish with a time of 2 minutes and 26 seconds and Abby Arnett grabbing 8th place with a time of 2 minutes and 38 seconds. 

Lastly, Mt. Pleasant’s 4×200 meter relay team finished with the gold with a time of 1 minute and 51 seconds, while Mediapolis took 5th place with a time of 1 minute and 56 seconds. 

In the field events, Sanders took 10th in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet and 0.75 inches, while Bailey Jalas of Mt. Pleasant grabbed 12th with a jump of 15 feet and 0.5 inches. Mediapolis’ Annabelle Hedges finished in 15th with a jump of 14 feet and 6.5 inches.  ,

Mt. Pleasant’s Paige Newton grabbed a 5th place finish in the high jump as she cleared 4 feet and 9.75 inches. 

In the shot put, Ella Ensminger and Kya Goodrich of Mt. Pleasant finished top 10 as Ensminger tossed the shot 35 feet 11.25 inches, which nabbed her 2nd place, and Goodrich grabbed 6th place with a throw of 33 feet 4.75 inches. Taegan Frazier of Danville finished in 5th place with a toss of 33 feet and 6 inches. 

The Mt. Pleasant girls team will compete at a meet in West Burlington on March 26th, while the boys’ team will travel to Washington on Thursday, March 21st, to compete in a meet. 

The WACO boys’ team will travel to Washington to participate in a meet on Thursday. The girls’ team will run on March 26th at West Burlington.

Columbus Community has canceled their track meet scheduled for today due to weather.

The New London and Central Lee boys’ teams will participate in a meet on March 25th at West Burlington.

The Van Buren County girls’ and boys’ teams will travel to Albia for a meet on Thursday.

The Mediapolis and Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ teams will travel to Washington on Thursday for a meet. The Mediapolis, Winfield-Mt. Union, and New London girls’ teams will compete in a relay on March 26th at West Burlington.

High School Soccer

The WACO boys’ team will open the season on March 28th against Fairfield on the road at 5 pm.

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ and girls’ teams will take on West Liberty on March 25th at home with the girls’ game scheduled first at 5 pm. 

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ will host Mediapolis on March 26th to start their season at 4:30 pm, while the boys’ will travel to Danville to play at 5 pm on the same day. 

The Danville girls’ team will face off against Assumption on March 25th on the road at 5 pm.

The Mediapolis boys’ team will take on Burlington on March 26th on the road at 5 pm.

College Basketball

The Iowa women’s team will be the #1-seed in the Albany Regional for the National Championship bracket, which means they will host the first two rounds. The Hawkeys will take on either Holy Cross or UT-Martin on Saturday, March 23rd, at 2 pm.

The Iowa State women’s team will be making their 5th consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament as the Cyclones earned as  the #7-seed. They will face off against Maryland on Friday, March 22nd, at 6:30 pm. 

The Iowa State men’s team had quite the weekend as the Cyclones claimed their 5th conference championship in the past 10 seasons after defeating Houston 69-41. The Cyclones then claimed the #2-seed in the NCAA tournament as they will compete against the #15-seed South Dakota State on Thursday, March 21st, at 6:35 pm.

The Iowa men’s team earned the #3-seed in the National Invitation Tournament and the Hawkeyes will face off against the #4-seed Kansas State tomorrow, March 19th, at 8 pm. 

March Madness

The KILJ bracket challenge, sponsored by The Press Box and Wiley’s Interior Furnishings and Design, has officially started. The first four play-in games will not count towards your final score and brackets are due by the end of the day, Wednesday, March 20th.
