High School Basketball
The Danville girls’ team will host Burlington tonight at 7:30 pm.
The Mt. Pleasant and Central Lee boys’ teams will make a trip to Mid-Prairie tonight to participate in a jamboree with the Panthers’ opponent being West Branch.
The WACO, Holy Trinity Catholic, and New London boys’ teams will compete in the Hillcrest Academy Jamboree tonight at 6 pm.
The Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team will take on HLV in a jamboree tonight at English Valleys at 6 pm. Head coach Klay Edwards talked about his expectations for his squad tonight,
“So, I just want to really see how some of these younger guys compete, how composed they are when the lights are actually on and they’re playing against somebody that’s not their schoolmate. So yeah, really looking for, see who will step up and do what we’ve asked them to do a week and a half into the season.”
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will tipoff tomorrow, November 26th, at 7 pm for their home opener against Pella. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm.
New London will hit the road to face off against Davis County tomorrow at 6 pm.
The Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will host Pekin tomorrow at 6 pm for their home opener.
The WACO girls’ team will travel to Wapello tomorrow for the first game of the season with tipoff at 6 pm.
Mediapolis will face off against West Burlington tomorrow night at 6 on the road.
Columbus will take on Louisa-Muscatine in a road matchup tomorrow at 7:30 pm.
High School Wrestling
The Mt. Pleasant and Mediapolis girls’ teams traveled to Burlington for the Grayhound Invite over the weekend and here’s how the two squads performed. The Panthers had four wrestlers competing with Quintrie Lee picking up three wins, including a pin over Kaitlynn Crump of Bettendorf in the 3rd place match of the 110-pound weight class. In the 115-pound weight class, Paris Phosy fell in her 3rd place bout to finish in 4th place. Zenlynn Lee’s return to the mat proved successful as she finished 3-0, including a 4-3 decision win over Peggy Miller of Washington for 1st place in the 145-pound weight class. Lastly, Olivia Gordy won by fall in her 3rd place match in the 235-pound weight class.
Mediapolis’ top finisher was Avery Hollingsworth as she took 6th place in the 105-pound weight class.
Mt. Pleasant will travel to West Liberty tonight along with Wapello for a tournament.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union and Fairfield girls’ teams competed in a tournament at Wilton over the weekend and the top finisher for the Wildcats was Josie Nelson in the 145-pound weight class. The senior went 3-0 over the course of the day with a win by fall in the 1st place match over Addi Whisner of Mt. Vernon. Jada Moats claimed 3rd place in the 190-pound weight class, finishing 2-1 for the weekend.
Fairfield had two wrestlers grab 2nd place as Alyia Abbot in the 110-pound weight class and Samantha Lyons in the 170-pound weight class each finished 3-1 for the weekend.
Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union will host a tournament tomorrow, November 26th, with Mediapolis and WACO in attendance.
The WACO girls’ team traveled to BGM over the weekend and Elyssa Graber finished the tournament 3-0 in the 105-pound weight class with a win by fall in the championship match to cap off the day. Lastly, Rylee Rice claimed 3rd place with a win by fall in the 110-pound weight class.
Southeastern Community College
The men’s basketball team is now 9-0 to start the season after defeating Missouri State University 65-57 over the weekend. The Blackhawks will host the Broadway Classic on Friday, November 29th, at 7 pm against Lincoln Trail College.
College Football
#17 Iowa State avoided another upset against Utah over the weekend as Carson Hansen plunged in for his second touchdown of the night in a 31-28 win. Jayden Higgins had a big night with 155 receiving yards and one touchdown for the Cyclones. Iowa State will punch their ticket to the Big 12 Championship game with a win against Kansas State this Saturday, November 30th, at 6:30 pm at home.
Iowa grounded and pounded Maryland over the weekend on their way to a 29-13 victory. Kaleb Johnson continued his superb season with a 164 yard and one touchdown performance on the ground as the Hawkeyes finished the game with 268 total rushing yards. Iowa will take on Nebraska at home at 6:30 pm on Friday, November 29th.
College Basketball
The #5 Iowa State men’s team will play #4 Auburn in the first round of the Maui Invitational tonight at 8.
The Iowa men’s team’s will compete against USC Upstate tomorrow, November 26th, at 7 pm at home.
The #8 Iowa State women’s team narrowly avoided back-to-back losses to Missouri Valley Conference opponents after sneaking out with an 80-78 win over Drake yesterday. Audi Crooks had a monster game, cashing in for 33 points. The Cyclones will participate in the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Thursday, November 28th, with game one at 12:30 pm against #1 South Carolina.
The Iowa women’s team suffocated the Washington State offense yesterday in a 72-43 victory in front of the home crowd. The Hawkeye defense held Washington State to just 27% from the field, while Lucy Olsen led the scoring with 17 points and added eight rebounds to the effort. Iowa will start off the Cancun Challenge on Thursday at 5:30 pm against Rhode Island.
