Prep Softball (Friday):

Davis County 15, Mount Pleasant 0

Davis County scored early and often as they rolled to a 15-0 win over Mount Pleasant last night at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.

Madison Helling took the loss for the Panthers , walking two and striking out three in her appearance.

Savana Walls had a hit for Mount Pleasant in the loss.

The Panthers fell to 0-8.

Van Buren County 12, Danville 2

Makenzie Morris, Carlea Beckman and Ava Smith each had two hits but it was Van Buren County who cruised to a 12-2 win over Danville last night.

Kenna Furnald, who finished 5th in the long jump in Class 1A at the State Track meet, furnished her first home run of the season.

Ivy Davidson had two hits and four runs batted in for Van Buren County.

Isabel Manning scored two runs for the Warriors, as well.

Van Buren improved to 4-1 while Danville stumbled to 1-4.

Prep Baseball (Friday):

It was a quiet night of baseball in the area last night.

Your Southeast Iowa Sports Leader will be in Burlington for a clash between Super Conference rivals New London and Notre Dame, who will scrap for the first time since last year’s substate final.

First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

College Track: Two Hawks Named to All-Region Team:

University of Iowa director of track and field Joey Woody and Hawkeye senior Laulauga Tausaga (La-lau-ga)  have been named Midwest Region Men’s Coach of the Year and Midwest Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year. The announcement was made Friday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Woody led Iowa to the 2021 Big Ten Outdoor Championship on May 16. The Hawkeyes scored a school-record 127.5 points, 33 points in front of second-place Michigan. The outdoor title was the second straight for Iowa, who won the 2019 championship in Iowa City, and completed in the 2021 indoor-outdoor Big Ten championship sweep.

Woody and Tausaga lead the Hawkeyes to the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 9-12 in Eugene, Oregon.

College Sports: UNI Student Athletes Break Classroom Records:

UNI Athletics posted a department-wide semester GPA of 3.33 with every team hitting the 3.00 mark and 10 of UNI’s 15 teams carried a GPA over 3.46, the school announced Friday.

UNI’s swimming and diving and Softball both recorded a 3.70, the highest team GPA of any of the teams.

Furthermore, Panther swimming and diving had the third-best GPA of any team in Division I last semester.

Panther men’s golf recorded the highest men’s team GPA at 3.46.

After the fall semester, UNI’s student-athletes have recorded a GPA higher than the general student body for 22 consecutive semesters.

College Track: Cyclones Kiptoo Named Region POY:

Iowa State’s Wesley Kiptoo has been named the Midwest Region Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year.

Kiptoo became the first student-athlete in Big 12 history to win three conference titles in the same conference meet, winning in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs.

Kiptoo will run in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 5,000 and 10,000.

They’ll begin Wednesday in Eugene, Oregon.

This is the first time a member of the Iowa State men’s track program has won the award.
