Prep Football: IHSAA Announces 2021 Schedules

The Iowa High School Athletic Union has released schedules for the 2021 season.

Mount Pleasant, who has been reclassified to Class 4A, will open their season August 27th at home against Fairfield.

From there, the Panthers will on Washington on the road then come home for a date with Keokuk.

They’ll be on the road at West Burlington/Notre Dame in Week 4 — then will open a tough stretch at home against Fort Madison, at Iowa City Liberty and at Burlington.

They’ll close with two at the Leaf against Clinton and defending state champion North Scott.

Boys’ Soccer: Panthers Pummel Keokuk:

In their best performance of the year, Mount Pleasant pummeled Keokuk to the tune of a 6-nil win in a Southeast Conference fixture last night.

Mount Pleasant scored twice in the first half and added four more in the second for good measure.

The win moved the Panthers to 2-7.

Keokuk slumped to 0-8.

Mount Pleasant will host Fairfield Thursday, with kick slated for 4:30 p.m.

Girls’ Tennis: Panthers Pick Up Dual Win:

The Mount Pleasant girls’ tennis team received a strong performance from No. 1 singles player Savana Walls as the Panthers picked up a 5-4 win over Notre Dame-West Burlington in a nonconference tennis dual at East Lake Park yesterday.

Walls cruised to an 8-0 win over Grace Kohlhof.

Also earning singles win for Mount Pleasant were Melanie Olivas and Maleena Yocum.

Walls and Gisele Fajardo won their doubles bout 8-6, while Yocum and Jeeny Dykstra were victorious in No. 3 doubles winning 8-3.

The win moved the Panthers to 1-5.

Notre Dame slumped to 0-4.

In tennis action tonight:

  • Mount Pleasant boys’ at Maharishi (3:30 p.m.)
  • Mount Pleasant girls’ vs. Fort Madison (4:30 p.m.)

Prep Track: Local Talent Shines at Hawk Relays in Donnellson:

Danville showed out in a big way on the girls’ side, while New London dominated the boys’ events at yesterday’s Hawk Relays in Donnellson, hosted by Central Lee.

The Danville girls’ won 11 events, while Addison Parrott wore the triple crown.

Parrott again swept the distance races, winning the 800, 1500, and 3000m meter runs.

The Bears were named victors in six relays — the 4×100, 4×200, 4×400, 4×800 and both the sprint and distance medley.

Not to be outdone on the boys’ ledger, New London also won 11 events.

Seth Bailey paced the Tigers with wins in both the 800m and 1600m runs.

Josh Catala continued his ascension with another victory in the 200m dash, while Carter Allen — a Drake Relays participant — cruised to wins in both the shot and discus.

New London took wins in four relays, as well — the 4×200, 4×400, 4×800 and the distance medley.

In local track tonight:

  • Mount Pleasant’s boys’ and girls’ programs will be at Keokuk at Calvert Stadium for Keokuk’s home invite. Competing there will be Burlington, Central Lee, Clark County, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Mediapolis and Van Buren. Events will get underway at 4:30 p.m.

Girls’ Golf: Panthers Finish Second in Triangular:

The Mount Pleasant girls’ golf team finished second only to top-ranked Washington at yesterday’s conference triangular.

Elli Liechty shot a 50 to lead the way for the Panthers, while Ryann Davidson carded a 55.

Kylie Walderbach added a 60 for the Panthers, who finished with 221 strokes.

Washington won with just 165.

The Panthers will host their home invite this Friday.

In other golf action last night:

  • Highland 224, Winfield-Mount Union 249
    • Abbie Cooley shot a 56 for the Wolves, but it was not enough as the Highland Huskies took down the Lady Wolves in a Super Conference golf dual yesterday. Highland’s Charlie Aicher shot a meet low 44 to leads the Huskies.
  • Danville 230, Central Lee 293
    • Danville’s Natalie Wilcox carded a meet low 46 to claim medalist honors as Danville earned a Super Conference win over Central Lee. Karissa Moeller led the Hawks with a 58.

Boys’ Golf: Brady Loyd Stays Hot for W-MU:

Brady Loyd continued to shine as the Winfield-Mount Union boys’ golf team earned a big win over Highland at Twin Lakes Golf Course.

Jacob Kongable shot a 47, while Carter Loyd added a 49.

Bryce Wade and Seth Schurr chipped in with 51’s.

Other golf action last night:

  • Mediapolis 195, Hillcrest Academy 213
    • Grant Hilton was medalist for the Bulldogs, scoring a match low 45.
  • Central Lee’s David Wright was medalist with a 53, but neither the Hawks nor the visiting Danville Bears had enough players for a team score. Jackson Denning added a 54 for the Hawks.
