High School Track and Field

The State Track and Field meet will start on Thursday, May 16th, and run through Saturday, May 18th, in Des Moines. KILJ will bring updates throughout the three day event.

Some headlines to look out for:

The Mediapolis boys’ team will be competing in 12 events as the Bulldogs attempt to defend their state championship from last season.

The SEISC boys’ teams will be busy in Class 1A as Danville will be competing in seven events, Winfield-Mt. Union in six, and WACO in five events. 

Danville’s Kenna Furnald will be participating in four events with the long jump yielding a possible state championship.

Lastly, the Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will have 10 members competing, including relay teams in the 800-sprint medley, the 4×200, and the 4×100. 

High School Soccer

The  boys’ Southeast Iowa Super Conference semifinals took place last night and the championship game is set. Mediapolis took down Danville in dominant fashion 6-2. 

Burlington Notre Dame pulled off the upset in penalty kicks last night against Hillcrest Academy, winning 3-2. The Nikes will face off against Mediapolis for the conference championship today. 

The WACO boys’ team will host Central Lee on Monday, May 13th, at 5 pm for the first round of the Class 1A District 6 postseason bracket, while Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union will face off against Danville on the road at 5 pm.

The Mediapolis girls’ team will host Central Lee on Wednesday, May 15th, at 7 pm for the Class 1A Region 1 quarterfinal. 

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will face off against Ottumwa on Monday at home. 

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team will travel to Mt. Pleasant on Friday, May 17th, for the Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinal at 5:30 pm.

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will travel to Burlington Notre Dame to take on Keokuk in the first round of the district 5 postseason at 5:30 pm on Monday.

High School Tennis

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team fell to Central DeWitt yesterday 5-1 in the first round of the Class 1A region 4 postseason bracket. The Panthers finished the regular season with a 7-4 record, including a 5-3 conference mark.

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will take on Albia to begin their team substate bracket journey today at Fairfield. 

High School Golf. 

Wapello will host districts on Monday, May 13th, at Heritage Oaks with Winfield-Mt. Union and New London’s Coen Fitzpatrick traveling to compete. 

The Deerwood Golf Course in New London was the site for the first round of girls’ 5C regional golf and the home team certainly had the advantage, running away with the top spot was New London with a team score of 369, qualifying the Tigers for the regional final.

The Tigers were led by the two best scores on the course, belonging to Taylor Phillips, who carded an 80, and Sophie Malott, who shot an 83. Emma Busby also finished with a 101, which was the fifth best score of the course.

Louisa-Muscatine and Wapello also qualified with team scores of 394 and 467, respectively.

Holy Trinity Catholic finished in fourth as a team, Winfield-Mt. Union grabbed fifth, and WACO took sixth place. Columbus, Danville, and Moravia did not have enough players for a total team score.

Leading the charge for the Crusaders was Emma Mohrfeld with an 18-hole score of 112. Lily Freeman shot a 106 for the Wolves, a top ten score. WACO’s top golfer was Morgan Meyer with a score of 125, while Isabella Mitchell was the leader for Danville with a score of 156.

The Regional 5 Final will take place at Honey Creek Resort in Moravia on Wednesday, May 15th.

Mid-Prairie hosted the Class 2A 5A Regional yesterday and Tipton, Mid-Prairie, and West Liberty all advanced to the region final. Mediapolis finished in fourth with a score of 472 and Van Buren County took fifth place.

Olivia Hines of Mediapolis grabbed the gold individually with a score of 81 to advance to the region final.  

Burlington Notre Dame was led by Emersyn Hopkins’ top ten score of 101 and Van Buren County’s top golfer was Keely Duncan as she carded a 108. Reegyn Scott of Central Lee finished in 17th place with a score of 115.

The West Liberty Country Club will host the Region 5 final on Wednesday.

The Williamsburg district meet will take place on Monday at Stone Creek Golf Course with Washington competing as a team and Mt. Pleasant’s Reece Coffman participating as an individual.

The girls’ teams of Mt. Pleasant, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk, and Washington will travel to Solon for their regional meet scheduled for Wednesday, May 15th.

High School Baseball

Mt. Pleasant will host Van Buren County to get the season rolling at 7 pm on Monday, May 13th.

Central Lee will start their season on May 20th on the road against Fort Madison at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will take on New London on May 21st at 5:30 pm.

Mediapolis will square off against Cardinal on Monday at 7:30 pm at home.

Burlington Notre Dame will travel to Cascade for a doubleheader on Monday with game one at 5:30 pm.

High School Softball

Central Lee will travel to Fort Madison on May 20th at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will hit the road to face off against New London at 7 pm on May 21st.

Mt. Pleasant will scrimmage Holy Trinity Catholic on May 16th at home at 6:15 pm.

Mediapolis will square off against Lone Tree on May 21st at 7 pm at home.

Van Buren County will travel to take on Fairfield at 7:30 pm on May 20th.

West Burlington will face off against Keokuk at home on May 20th at 7 pm.

Southeastern Community College

SCC baseball advanced to the Region 11 semifinals yesterday after taking down Iowa Central 9-1 in seven innings. Caleb Klein clubbed a solo home run for the Blackhawks as Cole Smith and Caleb Wulf each notched two RBIs. 

Maddux Frese went 6.2 innings, striking out seven batters for his seventh win of the season. The Blackhawks will face of against Des Moines Area Community College today after they pulled off the upset against #1 Kirkwood.

Girls’ Prep Golf- The Deerwood Golf Course in New London was the site for the first round of girls’ 5C regional golf and home team certainly had the advantage, running away with the top spot was New London by nearly 30 strokes with a team score of 369, qualifying the Tigers for the regional final.

The Tigers were led by the two best scores on the course belonging to Taylor Phillips, who carded an 80, and Sophie Malott, who shot an 83. Emma Busby also finished with a 101, which was the fifth best score of the course.

Also qualifying as a team was Louisa-Muscatine as they finished in second place with a team score of 394 and Wapello with a third-place finish of 467. The Arrows advanced since New London was the host.

The Falcons boasted the third and fourth best scores of the course of 90 and 92 in Kyley Wagner and Madison Bieri, respectively. Emma Gerhardt of Wapello touted the sixth best score of 104.

Holy Trinity Catholic finished in fourth as a team, Winfield-Mt. Union grabbed fifth, and WACO took sixth place. Columbus, Danville, and Moravia did not have enough players for a total team score.

State Track and Field- The state qualifying meets are in the books and the tentative list of qualifiers has been released for the upcoming 2024 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships. Here’s a look at our local qualifiers for Classes 3A and 4A.

Boys Class 3A

Mt. Pleasant

The Panthers will be watching early Friday morning in the field events for Avin Truong. His leap of 21 feet and 7 inches has him ranked sixth heading into the meet.

Fort Madison

The Bloodhounds will be plenty busy with 14 qualifiers, the most in the Southeast Conference. Julian Dear will be sprinting in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Mason McLey will compete in the 400-meter dash.

Henry Wiseman and Kiawante Smith will participate in the 110-meter hurdles. Kenden Bowie will battle it out in the high jump with a height mark of 6 feet and 3 inches.

Brandon Klein of Fort Madison and Josh Anderson of Washington will compete in the 100, 200, and 400-meter dashes along with the shot put in the wheelchair program.

The Bloodhounds will have four relays competing. Adam Sobczak, Dayton Lamar, Hayden Segoviano, and Dear will run in the 4×100 meter relay. Peyton Lambert, Riley Tripp, McLey, and Nolan Guzman will compete in the 4×800 meter relay.

Segoviano, Dear, Lambert, and Guzman will team up for the distance medley and Sobczak, Gavin Callahan, Smith, and Wiseman will participate in the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdle.

Keokuk

The Chiefs will have five qualifiers with Drew Campbell sprinting in the 100-meter dash. Ryan Bair running in the 200-meter dash. Mason Claus running and jumping in the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles.

Lastly, the team of Travarius Smith, Lucas Swainey, Bair, and Campbell will participate in the 4×200 meter relay.

Washington

The Demons will also be busy with Seth Shepard galloping in the 400-meter dash. Micah Rees will wrap up his high school career with runs in the 1600 and 3200. Andrew Rees will join Micah in the 3200.

The team of Keider Gomez Valdez, Kael Williams, Jayfred Espinosa, and Alec Ulin was an at-large bid for the 4×100 meter relay. Logan McDole, Tyler Alderton, Sawyer Tschantz, and Micah Rees will compete in the 4×800 meter relay. Valdez, Williams, Ulin, and Micah Rees will participate in the distance medley.

Lastly, Greyson Hartman will toss the shot put as just one of three freshmen to qualify for state.

Fairfield

The Trojans will have four qualifiers with three coming via at-large bids. Gabe Tejada will pace himself in the 800-meter run. Eli Zillman enters as the favorite to win the high jump as sophomore with a height of 6 feet and 6 inches. Ryan Giberson will also compete in the high jump.

Lastly, the team of Aiden Krueter, Ousman Saine, Tallon Bates, and Tejada will run in the 800-sprint medley.

Girls Class 3A

Mt. Pleasant

The Panthers will have 10 members competing with Alex Scott running in the 100-meter dash. Kynlee White grabbed an at-large bid for the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.49 seconds. Josie Gilmore also got an at-large bid in the high jump with a height of 4 feet and 10 inches.

Bailey Jalas grabbed a spot in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet and 6 inches. The Panthers will have two throwers competing in the discus in Kya Goodrich and Savannah Slobodnik and one in the shot put in Ella Ensminger.

Courtney Raub, Jalas, White, and Alex Scott will compete in the 800-sprint medley. Kiyah Sanders, White, Alex and Andi Scott will team up for the 4×200 meter relay. Lastly, the 4×100-meter relay team of White, Jalas, and Andi and Alex Scott enter with the sixth best time.

Fort Madison

Long distance is the strength of the Bloodhounds with Mara Smith entering as a top-five seed in the 800-meter run. Avery Rump competing in the 1500 and 3000-meter runs. Moreover, the team of Lillian Gelsthorpe, Olivia Buckner, Smith, and Rump will compete in the distance medley.

Brylie Lorence will be busy throwing heavy things, participating in the shot put and discus.

Lastly, the team of McKayla Schinstock, Smith, Avery Rump, and Addison Rump will run in the 4×800 meter relay.

Keokuk

The lone state qualifier for the Chiefs was Camryn Atterberg as she claimed a spot in the 400-meter dash.

Washington

The Demons will also provide some competition in the long-distance events with Iris Dahl running in the 800-meter run and the 1500-meter. Leighton Messinger will participate in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Ryen Pepper will join the race in the 400-meter hurdles.

Pepper, Leighton Salazar, Kendall Hinrichsen, and Messinger will team up to run the 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle. The 4×100 meter relay team will consist of Ada Kendall, Messinger, Salazar, and Jaedyn Moore. Lauren Horak, Abigail Kleese, Hinrichsen, and Dahl will run the 4×800 meter relay and Kendall, Eden Levetzow, Moore, and Dahl will participate in the distance medley.

Salazar will also be leaping in the long jump for the Demons, grabbing an at-large bid.

Fairfield

The Trojans will have five qualifiers competing. Carley Seeley will test her endurance in the 3000-meter run. Lilly Bergren will compete in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles.

The team of Maya Lane, Bergren, Isabel McCready, and Hayley Reinier will run in the 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle.

Lastly, Elyse Setterstrom will heave the discus.

Boys’ Class 4A

Burlington

Burlington will compete in seven events. Laderrias Shealey will sprint in the 200-meter dash. Joey Jolin will run in the 400-meter dash. Salomon Cordero will compete in the 110-meter hurdles. In the field, Keshawn Wyldon will look for a state championship in the long jump with the second-best mark of 22 feet and 4 inches.

The Grayhounds will have the team of Braxton Carlson, CJ Owens, John Phillips, and Cordero run in the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdle. Derrick Watson, Wyldon, Kamryn Reynolds, and Shealey will compete in the 4×200 meter relay. Darius Shealey will jump in for Reynolds to run the 4×100 meter relay. \

Girls Class 4A

Burlington

Burlington could have a freshman grab two state championships by Saturday’s end as Kylee Hill ranks in the top four in the discus—just six feet behind Delilah Subsin of Ottumwa—and has the top mark in the shot put with a distance of 46 feet.

Mylee Stiefel and Shariah Hart will sprint in the 100-meter dash. The team of Kierah Wiseman, Hart, Steifel, and Sophie Brown will compete in the 4×100 and 4×200 meter relays. Lastly, Meilah Ertz will jump in for Sophie Brown to run the 800-sprint medley.

Lilian Mennen will compete in the high jump for the Grayhounds as she enters with a mark of 5 feet.

Boys Class 1A

Winfield-Mt. Union

The Wolves have seven total qualifiers as Kohlby Newsom has the second fastest seed time in the 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute and 58 seconds. Gabriel Hemsworth qualified in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.48 seconds, the fourth fastest time of the qualifiers.

Winfield-Mt. Union will also have a 4×100 meter relay team compete with Cole Milks, Kael Johnson, Eli Miller, and Brenden Simmons acting as the main four and Abram Edwards, Lane Genkinger, and Cam Buffington will be the reserves.

Hemsworth, Sheaden Adams, Edwards, and Buffington will run the 4×200 meter relay as Ty Scorpil, Miller, and Genkinger will act as reserves. Adams, Scorpil, and Hemsworth with team up with Newsom for the 4×400 meter relay as Jaxton Jones and Genkinger will be the reserves.

The same team will also compete in the distance medley as they tout the fastest time of the heat. Lastly, Edwards, Simmons, Adams, and Scorpil will compete in the 800-sprint medley relay.

WACO

With five qualifiers, Hayden Shelman, Isaac Rich, Gage Samo, and Clayton Miller will sprint in the 4×100 meter relay as Louden Huisenga, Trey Edeker, Sam Meyer, and Octavio Velasco will be the reserves. Huisenga will participate in the high jump, entering with the height of 6 feet.

Clayton Miller will also be leaping in the long jump, entering with a distance of 20 feet and 2 inches. In the last field event for the Warriors, Chase Waterhouse will throw the discus as he enters with a seed mark of 147 feet, the seventh best mark of the field.

Lastly, Huisenga, Samo, Casey Coakley, and Miller will participate in the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdle relay.

Danville

The Bears will have three relays and six individuals competing next week with Ayden Doyle running in the 100-meter dash. His time of 11.18 seconds ranks him fifth in the heat. Doyle will also compete in the 200-meter dash.

The Bears will see Noah Horn and Jackson Shacklett run in the 800-meter run. Shacklett and Carter Fesler will then prepare for the distance event with the 15^th and 16^th best times, respectively, in the 1600-meter run.

Jaden Bauer, Kessler Whaley, Landon Seibert, and Doyle will run team up for the 4×100 meter relay and 800 sprint medley relay, as they rank top seven in both events. The team of Shacklett, Nick Powell, Fesler, and Horn will run in the 4×800 meter relay.

New London

The Tigers will have Brigham Porter run the 100-meter dash and London Franklin compete in the long jump as he has the 10^th best mark entering the meet.

Columbus

The Wildcats will be busy during the three-day event with 11 qualifiers. Kaiden Amigon enters the 100-meter dash with the seventh fastest time of 11.3 seconds. Riley Kaalberg will also compete in the 100-meter dash.

Amigon will also sprint in the 200-meter dash, while Alexander Rees and Lamar Ceant will participate in the 110-meter hurdles. The 4×100 meter relay team of Juan Chariez, Kaalberg, Ceant, and Amigon enters with the 8^th fastest time.

Amigon’s fourth event will be the long jump as his mark currently sits just seven inches from the top mark at 21 feet and 5 inches. Continuing in the field events, Russell Coil will throw the discus and shot put.

The Wildcats will participate in two more relays with Johnathan Miranda, Kaalber, Rees, and Ceant competing in the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdle and the team of Kaalberg, Rees, Chairez, and Damian Vergara will run in the 800-sprint medley.

Hillcrest Academy

Owen Scott will be the lone Raven as he will compete in the high jump and the long jump.

Girls Class 1A

Winfield-Mt. Union

Aurey Meeker will run the 100-meter dash. Josie Nelson will participate in the 100-meter hurdles. In the field events, Quin Smith will leap in the high jump.

The Wolves will also have two relays as the team of Tessa Huston, Suttyn Schlee, Meeker, and Nelson will run and jump in the 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle relay and Smith will sub in for Schlee to run in the 4×200 meter relay.

WACO

The Warriors will have Ally Rinner, Brenna Graber, Madelyn Farmer, and Zoey Dennler compete in the 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle relay.

Danville

The Bears will be prominent in the relays with four teams competing. Kenna Furnald, Miya Orbiana, Macie Wagner, and Jaeda Molle running the 4×200 meter relay. Alaina Gourely and Delaney Newberry will jump in with Orbiana and Molle for the 4×400 meter relay.

Furnald, Molle, Gourley, and Violette Sowell will participate in the 800-sprint medley and the team of Furnald, Molle, Orbiana, and Gourley will compete in the distance medley.

Furnald also enters as the favorite in the long jump with a mark of 17 feet and 1.5 inches. Lastly, Gourley will compete in the 800-meter run.

Highland

Highland will have one relay perform as Alexa Hahn, Hailey, Brun, Lilly Barre, and Grace Prybil will run the 4×100 meter relay.

Hillcrest Academy

Rya Scott will be busy, competing in the 100, 200, and 400-meter dashes along with the long jump. Marie Yoder will pace herself in the 3,000 meter run.

Boys Class 2A

Mediapolis

The Bulldogs will look to defend their state championship from a year ago and have a optimal chance of doing so.

Solomon Zaugg will compete in the 1600 and 3200 after sweeping both events in the state qualifying meet. Owen Schmidgall will also run in the 1600. In the 800-meter run, Logan Rosas enters as the favorite and Owen Schmidgall enters with the seventh best time.

The Bulldogs grabbed first at the state qualifier in the 4×800 (Owen and Will Schmidgall, Zaugg, and Logan Rosas), the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdle (Jackson Hutcheson, Kamden Stotlar, Ben Wolter, and Grady Gunn), the distance medley (Aedin Nelson, Noah Schmidgall, Reese Campbell, and Rosas), the 4×200 (Nelson, Henry Luttenegger, Noah Schmidgall, Kyler Crow), and the 4×100 meter relays (Nelson, Luttenegger, Noah Schmidgall, Crow).

The 4×400 meter relay team also qualified with a time of 3 minutes and 32 seconds.

Nathan Schmidgall claimed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.7 seconds. Logan Rosas took first in the 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute and 59 seconds. Noah Schmidgall won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.96 seconds.

Lastly, Henry Luttenegger leapt to a second-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet and 4 inches.

Central Lee

Grant Myhre is the lone Hawk performing as he will participate in the 400-meter dash.

Van Buren County

The team of Bryce Moquin, Izaak Loeffler, Kayden Simmons, and Tyler Stoltz will run in the 4×200 meter relay. Lincoln Bainbridge will step in for Loeffler for the distance medley. Stoltz will then participate in the high jump with an entering height of 6 feet and 1 inch.

West Burlington

Landry Haberichter will challenge for the championship in the 100-meter dash as he enters with just one of three times under the 11-second threshold. Logan Hamma will participate in the 400-meter hurdles and Mason Watkins will compete in the high jump.

The Falcons will also have a 4×100 meter relay team in Maddox Diewold, Eli Oleson, Layton Diewold, and Haberichter.

Girls Class 2A

Mediapolis

The Bulldogs will have two relay team competing. The 4×200 meter relay team of Bailey Jackson, Josie Hutcheson, Kira Messer, and Haley Steffener enter with the 15^th best time and the team of Grace Holsteen, Paige Steiner, Avery Dietz, and Bryn Wright grabbed an at-large bid for the 4×800 relay.

Prep Boys’ Golf- Spring postseason golf is moving right along as the sectional meets took place this past Wednesday and the official list of district qualifiers has been released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Here’s a look at our local qualifiers.

Class 1A

Wapello will act as host at the Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club with Winfield-Mt. Union competing as a team. The Wolves finished in second place in the New London sectional with a team score of 346 as Carter Loyd, Justin Knifer, and Cody Milks each finished with the fourth best score of 86.

Qualifying as individuals was Zach Harbison of Wapello as he carded a 90 and New London’s Coen Fitzpatrick as he finished with an 18-hole score of 92.

Class 3A

The Stone Creek Golf Club in Williamsburg will be the location to look out for as the Southeast Conference will have two members participating. Washington won the Mt. Pleasant sectional with a team score of 302. Roman Roth led the field with a score of 69 followed by Rajan Roth carding a 71. Drew Conrad shot a 77.

The home team did see a Panther qualify as an individual with the seventh best score of the course with a 79.

Both district meets are scheduled to start at 10 am on May 13^th.
