The Burlington Police Department is partnering with the Iowa Department of Revenue’s Alcohol and Tax Compliance Division to conduct underage alcohol compliance checks across the community.
According to a news release, the Iowa Underage Alcohol Enforcement Program is a joint effort aimed at reducing and deterring underage alcohol sales at liquor-licensed establishments. Officials say the program helps ensure businesses are following state law and reinforces responsible alcohol service practices.
During the compliance checks, underage individuals—working under the supervision of law enforcement—will attempt to purchase alcohol at licensed establishments. If an illegal sale occurs, the employee involved may be cited.
Police say the goal is not only enforcement, but also education and prevention. The initiative is designed to encourage businesses to properly train staff, follow alcohol service laws, and reduce the risks associated with underage drinking, including impaired driving and alcohol-related crashes.
The Iowa Department of Revenue also offers free alcohol compliance training for employees at licensed establishments. The program, known as I-PACT, is intended to improve awareness of state alcohol laws and support responsible retail practices.
Officials add that establishments with trained employees may have certain legal protections if violations occur, but emphasize the importance of full compliance.
Authorities say these checks serve as a reminder that selling alcohol to minors is illegal and can result in fines and other penalties.
