High School Baseball

Mt. Pleasant struck for three runs in the first inning and rode an Alek Barton pitching gem the rest of the way for a 4-0 win over Mediapolis last night. The Panthers notched five singles in the first inning with Barton capitalizing for a two-RBI single. The junior would proceed to strike out four in the complete-game shutout. Panther head coach Brent Broeker was happy to see his team bounce back after a pair of losses early in the week,

“Yeah, after Washington, we gave them Tuesday off and said, you guys just need to refocus and be ready to go on Wednesday. And the boys came ready to play, and we scored early and added one a little bit later. And Alek Barton threw a gem for us tonight, so everything worked out perfect.”

The victory also turned out to be a special milestone for Broeker, as it marked his 400th career victory. An honor he was quick to share with everybody else,

“It’s awesome, but it’s not mine. You got assistant coaches, you got players throughout the years. They’re the ones that did it. My wife, family, they got to witness the 400th, but they also had to deal with the 200 plus losses. So it’s a good feeling, it’s a milestone. So I’m happy with it, and we’ll move forward from here.”
