Postseason High School Baseball

In Class 1A Substate 6 District 11, Burlington Notre Dame relied on their pitching and superb base running to down Highland last night, 4-1. The Nikes trotted out four pitchers last night with the quartet of Landry Haberichter, Tatum Warner, Hudson Neally, and Payne Prottsman combining for 11 strikeouts. On the basepath, the Nikes captured eight steals with Haberichter snatching three bags and scoring a run. 

Van Buren County fell to Sigourney last night, 16-0. The Warriors finished the season with a 9-15 record. 

Burlington Notre Dame will travel to Sigourney on Saturday, July 11th, at 7 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm. 

In Class 2A Substate 4 District 8, Winfield-Mt. Union lost to Regina Catholic last night, 15-0. The Wolves claimed a record of 8-16 for the season. 

Mediapolis snuck past Mid-Prairie last night, 2-0. The Bulldogs will make the trip back to Regina Catholic for a matchup against the Regals at 7 pm on Saturday. 

In Class 2A Substate 5 District 9, Central Lee clobbered Pella Christian last night, 10-0. Blake Davis clouted a home run and notched two RBIs at the plate, while Mason Sanders twirled seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. The Hawks will host Albia on Saturday at 7 pm. 

High School Baseball

Fairfield outran Mt. Vernon last night, 14-10. Owen Adam smashed a grand slam in the winning effort. The Trojans finished the regular season with an 18-13 record. 

Postseason High School Softball

In Class 1A Region 8, #14 Holy Trinity Catholic will host Pekin tonight at 7 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm.

In Class 2A Region 3, Danville will hit the road to play #4 Louisa-Muscatine tonight at 7 pm. Bears head coach Makenzie Morris knows it will take everyone to exit with an upset victory,

“I hope they come back out with the same confidence that we had tonight and then just play a clean game. I’ve been preaching to them all year, if you’re going to lose to a team, don’t beat yourself. They have to beat you, so I hope we come out with that mentality and just come out and are ready to go. I think that if we play a good game, we’ll be okay and we’ll stick with them.

Wapello will make the trip to Regina Catholic tonight at 7 pm. 

Tonight, West Burlington-Notre Dame will head to Lisbon and Van Buren County will stay at home to compete against West Branch with both games at 7 pm.

In Class 3A Region 8, Central Lee will face off against West Liberty on the road tomorrow, July 9th, at 7 pm.

Fairfield will host Mid-Prairie at 7 pm tomorrow.

Washington will make the trip to Davis County tomorrow at 7 pm.

Mediapolis will compete against Centerville tomorrow at 7 pm on the road.

High School Softball

Fairfield demolished Keokuk last night, 15-4. Leah Helmick smacked a triple and a home run for four RBIs in the victory. The Trojans collected a 17-17 record for the regular season.

Washington defeated Fort Madison last night, 6-1. Colbie Greiner tallied 17 strikeouts in the complete game effort. The Demons produced an 18-15 record for the regular season. 

Mediapolis swept Davis County last night, winning 6-2 in game one and 18-5 in game two. AvaLynn Prall clobbered three doubles and accrued five RBIs between the two games. The Bullettes ended the regular season with a 16-10 record. 

Mt. Pleasant was shutout by Burlington last night, 8-0. The Panthers finished the regular season with a 10-18 record.

Mt. Pleasant Cross Country

Summer runs are underway for the Mt. Pleasant Cross Country team. These runs are optional but a great way to run with others and get in shape for the fall season. The runs are available to anyone entering 7th through 12th grades. Coaches may not be present at every run, as they are often led by upperclassmen.

On Mondays, the runs will take place at 6:30 am at the Old Threshers Museum Theatre. Wednesdays will be high school speed day at 7 am at Mapleleaf and Tuesdays and Thursdays will take place at Saunders Park by the swimming pool at 7 pm. 

The runs will continue through the middle of August until the Mt. Pleasant Cross County camp. If you have any questions, you can contact Coach Lyle Murray at 319-850-0867.  

Local Athletic Camps

Mt. Pleasant will be hosting their volleyball camps starting in late July at the high school gym. The youth camp for grades 3rd through 6th will run from July 20th through the 22nd from 5:30 to 7 pm. The camp cutoff date is July 15th.

The middle school camp for grades 7th and 8th and the high school camp for 9th through 12th graders will run August 3rd through the 5th with the middle school going from 4 to 5:30 pm and the high school to follow from 6 to 8 pm. The cutoff date is July 23rd.

Prospect League

The Burlington Bees will host the Normal CornBelters tomorrow, July 9th, for a doubleheader with game one at 5 pm. 

The Clinton LumberKings will stay at home tomorrow for a series against the Alton River Dragons with first pitch at 6:30 pm.
