A longtime southeast Iowa mentor is being recognized for seven decades of dedication to 4-H.
Hubert McElhinney was recently inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during the Henry County Fair, honoring a lifetime spent teaching, mentoring, and supporting generations of young people involved in livestock projects.
According to the Crawfordsville Community Club, McElhinney has devoted more than 70 years to helping 4-H members develop their skills in livestock. A former 4-H member himself, he has guided not only his own children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren through the program, but also countless nieces, nephews, neighbors, and youth from multiple counties.
McElhinney has served as a 4-H leader, a member of the Henry County Fair Board, the beef committee, and the Louisa County Cattlemen. He’s especially well known for teaching young exhibitors how to fit cattle and for helping youth with bottle lamb and goat projects.
Beyond livestock skills, McElhinney has emphasized responsibility, confidence, and sportsmanship while also generously supporting numerous 4-H fundraisers throughout the years.
The Crawfordsville Community Club says his lifelong dedication, generosity, and mentorship have left a lasting impact on countless 4-H members and their families, calling the Hall of Fame induction a well-deserved honor.
McElhinney will also be recognized during the Iowa State Fair as one of this year’s Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductees.
