Iowa is Home of the Nation’s Best Burger

Where is the home of the best burger? We asked this question a couple of weeks ago in search of an answer. With the help of the Iowa Beef and New York Beef Councils, that exact question has finally been answered. Each state sent forth its best burger to compete in a burger battle competition.

On June 6th, this intense bragging rights competition began. Burger lovers voted for their favorite burger, either The Flying Elbow in Iowa or Ale n’ Angus Pub in New York.

The voting period closed on June 13th at 11:59 PM and the results were tallied. With a total of 2,953 votes, the winner of this burger battle is the state in the heart of the midwest, Iowa!

The “Tombstone” smashburger from The Flying Elbow swept the polls and took home the title of the Burger Battle Champion. New York received 1,120 votes for their burger. This is the second year Iowa’s Best Burger winner has won this friendly competition.

We highly encourage you to head over to The Flying Elbow in Marshalltown, Iowa, and order the “Tombstone” smashburger. The burger itself features a blend of chuck, brisket, and short rib, which is fresh, never frozen, and sourced from Midwest cattle. It also contains Wagyu beef, raised by a Marshalltown producer. It is topped with Manchego cheese, guacamole, bacon, sour cream, shredded lettuce, tomato, and death valley hot sauce on the side. It, however, can be dressed in multiple different ways. Making this combination unlike any other.

They can also be found serving their award-winning burger at the Cattlemen’s Beef Quarters at the Iowa State Fair on Friday, August 12th starting at 10 AM, while supplies last. Learn more about the 2022 Iowa’s Best Burger winner at www.iabeef.org.

Two Vehicles Strike Same Deer

At approximately 8:39AM on Wednesday, June 15 the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a report of two vehicles striking the same deer in the 1600 grid of Old Hwy 34.

Upon officers’ arrival it was learned that one of the two vehicles had left the scene while the other operator, Theresa Zihlman, of rural Mt. Pleasant remained on scene.  An investigation conducted into the report revealed that Zihlman had struck a deer that was initially struck by a westbound vehicle and the deer was pushed directly into the path of the Zihlman vehicle, who was traveling eastbound on Old Hwy 34.  Zihlam was operating a 2015 Toyota Highlander that sustained moderate damage to the front end and front passenger door area.  No injuries wee reported.

Please Conserve Electricity

Due to unseasonably high temperatures, please conserve electricity. Your energy providers continue to do everything possible to meet your energy needs. Associated Electric Cooperative, the power supplier for six regional generation and transmission cooperatives and 51 distribution cooperatives in Iowa, Missouri and Oklahoma, including Access Energy Cooperative, have notified member systems that energy supplies may be tight on June 16 and June 17. Everyone can help make a difference by conserving energy the rest of this week from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., when peak energy use occurs.

This conservation appeal was triggered by the unseasonably hot weather pattern, unplanned outages at three of Associated’s generating units, and projections of declining wind power at the wind farms for Thursday and Friday.

During the severe winter storm in February 2021, members made a difference by conserving energy to help the system through that energy peak event, and the system served by Associated experienced no service interruptions. Everyone is being asked once again to help conserve energy. Members can help conserve energy by:

    • Raising thermostats a few degrees. For example, if a normal setting for a member’s home is 75 degrees, raise it to 78 degrees.
    • Limiting the use of large appliances.
    • Unplugging devices that are not in use.
    • Turning off unnecessary lights and fans.

Please safely conserve electricity as we all endure this weather event. The employees of Access Energy Cooperative, NE Missouri Electric Power Cooperative and Associated Electric Cooperative continue to do everything possible to ensure safe and reliable power for members.
