A federal fugitive wanted since 2018 was arrested Friday in Ottumwa.
The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office says FBI agents contacted local authorities earlier this month for assistance locating Johnathan Michael Hartman, 47, who was believed to be hiding in Wapello County.
Hartman was indicted by a federal grand jury in Oklahoma in January 2018 on 21 counts of wire fraud, but authorities had been unable to locate him.
During their investigation, deputies confirmed Hartman was living in rural Wapello County and had connections to businesses in Iowa. Officers conducting surveillance found him outside a business in the 300 block of East Main Street and arrested him without incident.
Hartman remains in the Wapello County Jail pending further court proceedings. Authorities say he is also wanted on warrants from Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska.
The Ottumwa Police Department, Southeast Iowa Inter-Agency Drug Task Force and FBI offices in Iowa and Oklahoma assisted with the investigation.
Hartman is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
