Officer Involved Shooting in Ottumwa Under Investigation

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday in Ottumwa.

Authorities say at around 12:30 p.m., members of the United States Marshals Service were attempting to serve an arrest warrant in the 500 block of North Green Street when an encounter took place with 31-year-old Michael Zurek.

During that interaction, a U.S. Marshal fired their weapon, striking Zurek. He died at the scene.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

The U.S. Marshals Service says it is cooperating with the investigation. Per agency policy, the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave.

Once the investigation by DCI and the Ottumwa Police Department is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Wapello County Attorney and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office for review.

No further information has been released.
