On May 21 at about 12:30 in the morning, an inmate at the Henry County Jail assaulted multiple staff members. Inmate Jeremiah Trevaughn Dean of Iowa City, Iowa, became combative when jail staff and officers attempted to remove him from a jail cell. As a result, a staff member and a deputy received minor injuries. Dean was charged with four counts of Assault by Inmate with Bodily Fluids or Secretions (Class D Felonies), Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations with Bodily Injury (Aggravated Misdemeanor), and Interference with Official Acts Causing Bodily Injury (Serious Misdemeanor).
Three Vehicles Involved in Crash
On May 24 just after 2:30 pm Mt Pleasant Police were dispatched to the BP Gas Station in the 2100 block of E Washington Street to investigate a motor vehicle collision.
It was determined that Abigal Jackson of Burlington was driving east on Washington Street when a vehicle operated by John Geiger of Salem, traveling westbound, made a left turn in front of her.
The Geiger vehicle was struck by Jackson’s and the impact caused the Geiger vehicle to crash into a third driven by Reno Chiri, who was waiting to pull out onto Washington from a parking lot. The total damage estimated to all three vehicles was over $15000. There were no injuries and Geiger was cited for Failure to yield upon a left turn.
Single Vehicle Crash
On May 24th, at about 8 AM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a single vehicle accident near Exit 229 on Highway 34. An investigation into the report determined that Summer Carver, 17, of Mt. Pleasant, was traveling eastbound on Highway 34 in her car when she lost control and the car entered the median. The vehicle then struck a cable barrier with caused approximately $4500 damage to the vehicle. Damage to the cable barrier was estimated at $800. No injuries were reported. The driver was issued a citation for Failure to Maintain Control.

Crude Oil Summary · The price of global crude oil rose this week on the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) by $.39 per barrel over last week, currently priced at $110.82. · Brent crude oil rose $4.66 and currently priced at $114.62. · One year ago, WTI crude sold for $66.07 and Brent crude was at $68.80. Motor Fuels · As of Wednesday, May 25, the price of regular unleaded gasoline averaged $4.23 across Iowa according to AAA. o Prices rose 8 cents from last week’s price and $1.34 higher than one year ago. o The national average on Wednesday was $4.60, up 3 cents from last week’s price. · Retail diesel prices in Iowa were down 6 cents this week with a statewide average of $5.20. o One year ago, diesel prices averaged $3.05 in Iowa. o The current Iowa diesel price is 34 cents less than the national average of $5.54. · Wholesale ethanol held steady and is currently priced at $2.16. · The current Des Moines Terminal/Rack Prices are $3.39 for U87-E10, $3.85 for Unleaded 87 (clear), $3.77 for ULSD#2, $3.92 for ULSD#1, and $3.09 per gallon for E-70 prices. Street Construction Update for Oakbrook Place
With the recent rain today and forecast for tonight and Thursday May 26th the Contractor has decided to wait until Tuesday May 31st to finish the paving on Oakbrook Place in Mount Pleasant. Tuesday the North side of Oakbrook Place will reach maturity and the ready mix trucks will be able to finish pouring the concrete off the North side of Oakbrook Place. They will also be able to access the cul de sac with ready mix trucks to pour the driveways to the homes. With warmer temperatures next week and no rain the Contractor should get a lot if not all of the driveways replaced on Oakbrook Place.
Access Energy Cooperative Scholarships awarded
Congratulations to area high school students who were recently named as recipients of the 2022 Access Energy Cooperative scholarship program! Receiving a $1500 award each were: Chyane Davidson of Farmington; Ellie Rae Anderson of Fairfield; Lydia Ebeling and Lysha Bunnell of Mount Pleasant; Maura Watkins and Sydney Jones of Donnellson.
Chyane Davidson, daughter of Luke and Alisha Davidson, graduate from Central Lee High School, plans to attend Des Moines Area Community College to pursue a career in Veterinarian Technology.
Ellie Anderson, daughter of Sheila and Lundy Anderson, graduate from Fairfield High School, plans to attend the University of Iowa majoring in English/Creative Writing.
Lydia Ebeling, daughter of Chad and Angela Ebeling, graduate from Mount Pleasant Community High School, plans to attend Mercy College of Health Sciences to attain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Lysha Bunnell, daughter of Rick and Cara Bunnell, graduate from Mount Pleasant Community High School, plans to attend Southeastern Community College to pursue a career in Nursing.

Access Energy Cooperative awards six $1500 scholarships each year, two in each of its three districts. The parents or guardians of the applicant must be members of Access Energy Cooperative. Winners are chosen based on their academics, achievements, community involvement, and a submitted essay.
In addition to the six winners in our service districts, Hayley Chase of Danville, is being awarded a $1500 scholarship in lieu of attending the 2020 Youth Tour trips that was cancelled. Haley is a graduate of Danville High School.
Access Energy Cooperative is as rural distribution electric cooperative, providing power to homes, farms, business and industry in 10 southeast Iowa counties.
Genevieve M. McCabe (corrected)
Genevieve M. McCabe, 100, of Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, May 23, 2022 at Addington Place in Mt. Pleasant.
The funeral mass for Mrs. McCabe will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Thursday, June 2 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 607 South Jackson Street, Mount Pleasant. Father Paul Connolly and Father Steve Witt will concelebrate the mass.Burial will be in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 PM on Wednesday, June 1 at St. Alphonsus Church. The Rosary will be recited at 5 PM. A Scriptural Wake Service will follow the Rosary. The family will be present to greet friends following the Wake Service until 8 PM. Her casket will remain closed per her request.
In lieu of flowers, those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Mt. Pleasant Public Library or the Oakland Mills Nature Center.
