Jean Meinhardt

Jean Meinhardt, 89, of Donnellson, Iowa, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2022 at River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa.

Born on September 21, 1932, near Argyle, Iowa, the daughter of Glen O. and Stella M. (Derr) Ware. On June 6, 1949 she married Charles B. Stewart at the home of her parents. They moved to a farm near Anson, Missouri. Together they were the parents of two children, Marilyn Jean and Charles Kent. Her husband preceded her in death on March 8, 1958.

On June 4, 1966 in Farmington, Iowa she married Elden E Frueh. He preceded her in death on October 9, 1975. On January 16, 1999 she married Marlin L. Meinhardt in Donnellson, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 22, 2005.

Mrs. Meinhardt was a member of the Zion Mennonite Church. She had served as a youth sponsor, taught Sunday school and helped with Bible school for several years.

A collector of cookbooks, bird figurines, dishes and quilts. She enjoyed her home, yard-work, flowers, cooking and baking. Especially lemon pies because all of her family loved these. She enjoyed spending time with family and being with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren during their activities. Jean also enjoyed helping others.

Jean worked for Central Lee Schools when they first opened the new school, Sheaffer Pen Company, Donnellson Tax Services and Geils Oil and Go Mart, until retiring in the year 2000.

Survivors include one: daughter Marilyn (Marshall) Hulsebus of Donnellson, Iowa; one son: Charles (Nancy) Stewart of Donnellson, Iowa; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren including: Mark (Leslie) Hulsebus, Lauren, Grace, and Benjamin; Mari Anne (Jurgen) Ehler, Blake and Zane; Joni (Jeff) Junkins; Bill (Jenny) Stewart, Kelsie and Cameron; Stacy Stewart, Brayden Jordan; Matthew (Kaley) Hulsebus, Kasen and Stella. Also surviving is one sister: Lois White (Ivan Bunker) of Wever, Iowa and special friends Larry & Carolyn Geils of Branson, Missouri.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, sisters, brother and stepfather Frank Bideaux. A very special great grandson Rhett Marshall Ehler and special great granddaughter Reagan Jean Hulsebus.

The family will meet with friends Monday, March 21, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, with Pastor Mike Bennett officiating.

Burial will be held in the Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington, Iowa.

A memorial has been established in her memory to Greenglade Cemetery, University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital or Donnellson Ball Association.

Linda Whitington

Linda Whitington, 75, of Wapello passed away on Friday, March 18, 2022 at Southeast Iowa Medical Center.  Celebration of Life for Linda will be 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at the Church of the Nazarene in Wapello.  A time of food and fellowship will follow the celebration of life at the church.  A memorial has been established for the Ronald McDonald House in Linda’s name.      Sympathy messages can be left for the family at www.sandfuneralservice.com.

Linda Sue Wolfe was born on May 10, 1946 in Danville Illinois, the daughter of Ralph and Evelyn (Pierce) Wolfe.  On September 22, 1966, Linda was united in marriage to Gary “Tiny” Whitington in Fairmount, Illinois.  Linda worked as a waitress, at the various campgrounds, and at the age of 50 obtained her CDL and became a truck driver.  She was a member of the Church of Nazarene in Wapello and Red Hats.  She enjoyed crafting, making candy, reading, crocheting and dearly enjoyed being with her family.

Linda will be deeply missed by her children, Jim (Jenny) Whitington of Oakwood, Illinois, John (Audra) Whitington of Eagle Lake, Minnesota, Lee Ann (Kirk) Swanson of Wapello and Shannon (David) Williams of Alton, Missouri, grandchildren, Jessie Whitington, Cory (Krista) Whitington, Hannah (Alex) Zellmer, Jacob Whitington, Noah Whitington, Chris (Steph) Lihs, Chad (Lisa) Lihs, Mary (Curtis) Wright, Cody Swanson, Kayla (Karl) Mathews, Gary (Gailene) Whitington and Tiffany (Travis) Campbell and twelve great-grandchildren; brother, Dean (Sue) Wolfe of Danville, Illinois, sister, Nina (David) Keys of Hume, Illinois and nieces and nephews.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gary in 2008; son-in-law, Michael Lihs; two great-grandchildren, Valerie and Konner Lihs; and siblings, Don Wolfe, Dixie Welch and Delores Shields.

Janet E. Schroder

Janet E. Schroder, 85, of Danville, died Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Dennis C. Wilson

Dennis C. Wilson, 76, of Twin Lake, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Dennis was born on July 17, 1945, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the son of Donald C. Wilson and Edna L. Dawson. He married Lana Meyers September 12, 1965; she preceded him in death May 29, 1975. He married Linda (Willis) Morrow February 29, 1976.

Dennis graduated from Mt. Pleasant Community High School, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa in 1963. In January 1968, he joined the US Navy. He was a construction electrician with the Seabees and did two tours of duty in Vietnam. In November 1971, he was honorably discharged. He earned the following medals during his military career: Republic of Vietnam Campaign, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Combat Operations Insignia Medal. In April 1976, Dennis moved to Montague, Michigan. He was an electrician at Howmet Corporation until his retirement in 2001. He was an avid “car buff” and was a member of the National Hot Rod Association. He enjoyed working on his 1929 Ford Roadster, wood working, hunting, and car races. His love for the family dogs and bird watching became a big comfort to him when he could no longer do the many things he enjoyed doing.

Dennis is survived by: his children, Dennis “Todd” (Serena) Wilson of Georgetown, Texas, Troy (Sara) Wilson of Denver, North Carolina, Shantyl (Rusty) Cole of Princeton, West Virgina, L William (Missy) Morrow of Whitehall, Michigan, and Lee (Katie) Morrow of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Patrick, Garrett, and Connor Wilson, Catherine Fazlulahi and Maggie Wilson, Lauren (Kyle) Corcoran, Ben Grierson and Calvin Morrow, Owen and Will Morrow; two great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Logan Corcoran; and his brother, Dale Wilson of Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, and one brother, Donald Wilson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Local Democrat to Challenge in House Race

A Mt. Pleasant resident is seeking the Democratic nomination for Iowa House of Representatives in District 87. Mike Heaton is the only Democrat who has filed papers to run in the June 7 primary. Two Republicans will appear on the primary ballot. They are Joe Mitchell of Mount Pleasant and Jeff Shipley of Birmingham. Henry County was previously all in the same Legislative District and now the map approved by legislation has Salem Township, Tippecanoe Township and Center Township including the cities within them in State House District 87. The other part of the County that includes  the townships of Jackson, Baltimore, New London, Trenton, Marion, Canaan, Scott, Wayne, and Jefferson and the cities within them are now in State House District 95.   Republican Taylor Collins of Mediapolis is the only candidate running for the District 95 seat.

“Light Up the Lake” Family Fun Night Coming to East Lake

MOUNT PLEASANT—  Beautiful East Lake will be the stage for an evening of family fun Saturday April 23. The Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance has activities planned for all ages to enjoy.

 

“East Lake is such a beautiful attraction for our community, and we’ve been wanting to host something for families to enjoy. We hope everyone will come out for all the activities that will be going on that day”, said Kristi Perry, Executive Vice President of the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance.

 

The activities will kick off at 2:00 pm with a Color Run/Walk hosted by Crossfit Teo. Participants will take off from East Lake and head down to Crossfit Teo. By the time they get back to East Lake, they will be covered in beautiful colors. The cost is $30 per couple or $20 per person. T-shirts and Color Bags will be provided. At 5:30 pm, it will start to smell really good at East Lake for our Food Truck Festival. We will have 6-8 different food trucks set up in the softball field parking lot at East Lake. Come out and enjoy some delicious BBQ, burgers, tenderloins and of course desserts! You can park in the softball parking lot, grab your food and head down to the lake with your family and friends.

 

Once dark arrives around 8:00 pm, head over the Hayward Shelter where we will have a 21’ inflatable screen set up for an outdoor movie. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and we’ll bring the popcorn! We’re not announcing the movie just yet, but it will be family friendly.

IEDA Board approves assistance for three established companies and five startups in Iowa

March 18, 2022 (DES MOINES, IA) – Today, the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) Board approved awards for three companies, which will assist in the creation of 56 jobs and result in over $76 million in new capital investment for the state. These projects are located in Ames, Peosta and Underwood. The board also approved innovation funding in support of five startups located in Coralville, Des Moines, Riverside, Waukee and Wayland.

Awards made to five startups

FBB Biomed, doing business in Coralville, is a biotech company with a mission to expand the reimbursable diagnostics market to brain diseases. The company plans to demonstrate the performance of its prototype in a laboratory setting on patients with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. The company was awarded a $125,000 Demonstration Fund loan for additional testing and hiring of key personnel.

Riverside-based Harvest Increase Agriculture develops a series of fertilizer additives, called SUPRGrow, to increase corn yields. They continue to investigate the chemical and physical properties of the fertilizer, application rates to achieve the most effective results, and the application itself to save farmers time and money without having the need to make an extra pass over their fields. The company was awarded a $25,000 Proof of Commercial Relevance loan for product refinement.

Des Moines’ Dhakai is a clothing sourcing marketplace that connects small to midsize fashion brands and retailers directly to compliant and verified apparel manufacturers. The technology platform allows buyers to find the perfect fit with regard to materials used, minimum quantity requirements, and sustainability and social welfare practices, which removes the often-inefficient middlemen and significantly saves costs. The company was awarded a $100,000 Demonstration Fund loan for product refinement, market planning and entry activities, key personnel, and equipment.

Bristola, based in Waukee, is a renewable energy technology services company. Their patent pending anaerobic digester technology, known as the Submersible Robotic Cleaning System (SRCS), allows the cleaning and inspection of tanks and covered lagoons. The SRCS does not require a disruption in operations nor human entry, providing a more efficient and cost-effective solution that improves the overall operation and offers significant environmental benefits. The company was awarded a $25,000 Proof of Commercial Relevance loan for product refinement.

Headquartered in Wayland, ChopLocal provides an alternative meat supply chain through an online marketplace that connects consumers to butcher shops, meat processors and farmers. With more consumers purchasing meat online, it is hard for the smaller operations to provide that benefit, so the ChopLocal platform offers those suppliers with easy access to create an online storefront, manage orders and organize information. The company was awarded a $25,000 Proof of Commercial Relevance loan for IP development and evaluation and market analysis.

Award recommendations for these funds are made by the Technology Commercialization Committee to the IEDA Board for approval.

Berdex locates U.S. headquarters in Ames
Berdex USA manufactures livestock trailers with a focus on biosecurity measures and animal well-being. The company plans to locate its U.S. headquarters at an existing facility in Ames where it will manufacture three different livestock trailers for swine and cattle producers. The project represents a capital investment of just over $1 million and is expected to create 20 jobs at a qualifying wage of $28.87 per hour. The board awarded tax benefits through the High Quality Jobs (HQJ) program.

Camso expands product line in Peosta
A subsidiary of Camso Holdings USA and thus a subsidiary of Michelin North America, Camso Manufacturing USA designs, develops and manufactures specialized components, subsystems and assemblies for original equipment manufacturers. The company plans to rework its facility in Peosta with new equipment to implement a new line. The board awarded this $20 million capital investment project tax benefits through the HQJ program. It is expected to create 33 jobs, of which 17 are incented at a qualifying wage of $21.13 per hour.

Link Snacks expands facility in Underwood
Link Snacks, Inc. is a manufacturer of meat snacks operating in the U.S. and internationally. The facility in Underwood serves as a national distribution hub and the company plans to expand it, approximately doubling the current capacity. They also plan to purchase an automated storage and retrieval system. The project is expected to create three jobs at a qualifying wage of $22.94 per hour and was awarded tax benefits through the HQJ program. It represents a capital investment of just over $55 million.

 

HCHC alerts area residents to caller scam

Mount Pleasant, Iowa, [March 18, 2022] – Henry County Health Center would like to alert the public to scam telephone calls that are occurring. HCHC has received reports that community members have been receiving telemarketing calls from what appear on caller I.D. to be coming from HCHC telephone numbers.

These scam phone calls are solicitation calls about purchasing medical equipment. HCHC would like to make the public aware of these scams and inform the public that these calls are not coming from HCHC and that HCHC is not affiliated with any companies making these calls. If you receive a call requesting purchase of medical items and/or asking for your personal information, please decline to respond and remember to never give personal information over the telephone.
