James L. Barnett
James L. Barnett, 72, of Rome passed away on Friday, March 21, 2025 at his home.
Jim was born on September 21, 1952, in Henry County, the son of Carl and Imogene Martha (Bailey) Barnett. Jim worked for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, sold insurance, worked for Hawkeye Steel for a number of years and retired from Wal-Mart in the frozen food department. Throughout his life he was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing alongside of his dog “Bo”. Jim had a caring heart and was willing to help others when asked.
Those thankful in sharing in his life include his longtime companion, Melody Sanderson and her daughter Heather Griffis ( Steven Jones) and their children, Alyssa, Dakota and Bella, Jim’s children, Phil (Judy) Barnett and their children, Katelyn, Brandon, Tisha and Lexi, Nick Barnett and his daughter, Kali, Tiffany Barnett (Cody Rogers) and their children, Ella and Liam, Crystal Hopper and her children, Emma, Maison and Kaleb, his brother, Robert (Eileen) Barnett and his sister, Judy Epperheimer and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the Grant Cemetery with Pastor Guy Sammons officiating. Memorials may be directed to the family.

MPCHS Annual Dessert Theatre Set for April 12-13
Mount Pleasant Community High School is once again hosting its beloved Annual Dessert Theatre, set for Friday, April 12, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, April 13, at 2 p.m. This cherished event combines live music, engaging performances, and, of course, delicious desserts for an unforgettable experience.
Ticket sales kick off on Wednesday, March 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the high school band room. Guests can purchase a reserved table seat for $15, which includes both dessert and a fantastic show.
For those unable to attend the initial ticket sale, additional tickets will be available starting March 27 at Brown’s Shoe Fit or at the door before a performance—if seats remain.
A special treat awaits attendees on Sunday, as the middle school show choir and jazz band will be performing exclusively that day.
This annual event is a highlight for the MPCHS music program, showcasing the talents of students while offering a fun, community-centered evening. Be sure to grab your tickets early to secure a spot!

MP Compost Site Opening Soon!
The City Compost Site, Southwest of Saunders Park at the end of Yocum Lane & Hoaglan Drive will open on Wednesday, April 2nd. The Compost site will be open on Wednesdays from 1-6 and Saturdays 8-5 throughout the summer months and weather permitting. Trash stickers are no longer needed to drop off compost. WACO Family Fun Night Scheduled
WACO Community Family Fun Night is scheduled for Monday, March 24th. . The theme of this year’s Family Night is “Tamin Technology: Guiding our Kids to a Healthier Digital Life. Jan Hochstetler is a Waco HS graduate, an author, parent and education. She will give a presentation focusing on the impact of smartphones and social media on youth mental health. A free light meal will be served from 5:30pm to 6:30pm and the Community Resource Fair will be set up from 5:30pm – 8:00pm in the WACO High School main gym. Childcare will be provided. Boat Registration Due 4/30/25
A reminder to Henry County boat owners that all current boat registrations expire April 30, 2025 and must be renewed prior to use on Iowa waters. Henry County Recorder, Lynnae Buffington says the ‘late fee’ will go into effect on July 1, 2025, however, you cannot legally use your vessel after April 30,, 2025 without registration renewal.
There are two options to renew your boat registration: in person at the Henry County Recorder’s Office in the courthouse on 2nd floor or you can call 319-385-0765 and they will provide you with a renewal amount so the renewal payment can be mailed.
Henry County Recorder office hours are Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
