Des Moines, IA- The 2024 coed State Track and Field Meet is getting ready to kick off on Thursday, May 16^th, and run through Saturday, May 18^th. Here’s a breakdown of our local teams and the Class 2A and Class 3A Friday events.

The Friday slate of evens will start off with Class 2A and Class 3A at 9 am with the distance medley and the final scheduled event, the 4×400 meter relay, will begin at 2:10 pm.

Running Events

The girls’ Class 3A distance medley will start around 9 am with Fort Madison and Washington fielding teams. Van Buren County and Mediapolis will both be running the distance medley at 9:40 pm for Class 2A, while Washington will compete for Class 3A.

The Southeast Conference will have two members in the girls’ Class 3A 100-meter hurdles with Leighton Messinger representing Washington and Lilly Bergren of Fairfield. The boys’ Class 3A 110-meter hurdles will feature Mason Claus of Keokuk.

The 4×200 is set to start at 11 am with Mediapolis fielding a girls’ and boys’ team. Van Buren County will run in the boys’ 4×200 meter relay with Keokuk competing in the boys’ Class 3A 4×200.

The 400-meter hurdles will begin at noon with Washington’s Ryen Pepper and Messinger competing against Fairfield’s Bergren. The boys’ Class 2A 400-meter hurdles will feature Logan Hamma of West Burlington and Class 3A will have Claus of Keokuk in his second individual event of the day.

The 4×100 meter hurdle at 12:40 pm will feature a decent amount of Southeast Iowa talent as the girls’ Class 3A will feature Mt. Pleasant and Washington. The boys’ Class 2A will have Mediapolis and West Burlington running, while Fort Madison and Washington will compete in Class 3A.

The Mediapolis boys’ team will be the only squad running the 4×400 meter relay from the area as their race is scheduled to start at 2 pm.

Field Events

The first round of field events, starting at 9 am, will see Ella Ensminger of Mt. Pleasant and Brylie Lorence of Fort Madison competing against one another in the girls’ Class 3A shot put.

Avin Truong will attempt to break 22 feet in the boys’ Class 3A long jump. In the boys’ Class 2A high jump, Van Buren County’s Tyler Stoltz and West Burlington’s Mason Watkins will be participating.

The next and final round of field events will begin at 11:30 am with Greyson Hartman of Washington throwing the shot put for the boys’ Class 3A event. Lastly, Bailey Jalas of Mt. Pleasant and Leighton Salazar of Washington will compete in the girls’ Class 3A long jump.

Class 1A and Class 4A will have a mirrored schedule to the morning and early afternoon schedule with the girls’ Class 1A distance medley starting at 2:40 pm and the last event scheduled to start at 7:40 pm (the 4×400 meter relay preliminary).

Running Events

There will be just one lone team running in the distance medley relay from Southeast Iowa as the Danville girls’ team will field a team for the 2:40 pm slot.

The 100-meter hurdles preliminary, scheduled to run at 4 pm, will see Josie Nelson of Winfield-Mt. Union competing for a chance to run in the finals on Saturday.

The 110-meter hurdles preliminary, set to run at 4:20 pm, will feature Lamar Ceant and Alexander Rees of Columbus for Class 1A and Burlington’s Salomon Cordero will run in the Class 4A race.

Winfield-Mt. Union in Class 1A and Burlington in Class 4A will have a team run in the boys’ and girls’ 4×200 meter relay. The Danville girls’ team will join the Wolves at 4:40 pm to race with the boys’ races scheduled for 5:10 pm.

Gabriel Hemsworth of Winfield-Mt. Union will run at 6 pm for the Class 1A 400-meter hurdles final.

The Class 1A boys’ 4×100 meter relay preliminary will be highly competitive, but first at 6:20 pm the Highland girls’ team will be running. Burlington will have a boys’ and girls’ team participating. Lastly, Winfield-Mt. Union, WACO, Danville, and Columbus will field a team at 6:40 pm.

The 4×400 meter relay preliminary is the last event for Friday night with the Danville girls’ team running at 7 pm and the Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team competing at 7:40 pm.

Field Events

The first round of field events will start at 2 pm with Kylee Hill of Burlington throwing the shot in the girls’ Class 4A shot put—she yields the best mark of the field. The Class 4A boys’ long jump will see Burlington’s Keshawn Wyldon compete with the second-best mark of the heat.

Lastly, Owen Scott of Hillcrest Academy and WACO’s Louden Huisenga will participate in the boys’ Class 1A long jump.

In the late evening field events at 4:30 pm, Russell Coil of Columbus and Chase Waterhouse of WACO will throw the discus in the boys’ Class 1A discus. For the girls’ Class 1A high jump, Quin Smith will be representing Winfield-Mt. Union.

High School Track and Field

The State Track and Field meet will start tomorrow, May 16th, and run through Saturday, May 18th, in Des Moines. KILJ will bring updates throughout the three day event.

Some headlines to look out for:

The Mediapolis boys’ team will be competing in 12 events as the Bulldogs attempt to defend their state championship from last season.

The Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team could have two individual champions as Kohlby Newsom, in the 800-meter run, and Gabriel Hemsworth, in the 400-meter hurdles, enter with top-four times. 

The field events for Mt. Pleasant will be a category to look out for with six competitors between the boys’ and girls’ teams.

Lastly, the girls’ 4×100 meter relay will consist of a couple different teams from the area as Mt. Pleasant boasts the sixth best time entering the meet in Class 3A and Burlington has a talented squad for Class 4A. 

High School Soccer

In the boys’ Class 1A Substate 6 postseason bracket, Central Lee will have their hands full when they travel to #1 West Branch on Monday, May 20th, at 7 pm. 

In the bottom half of the bracket, Danville will face off against Mediapolis in the semifinal on May 20th at Mediapolis. 

In the boys’ Class 2A Substate 5 bracket, Keokuk will take on Williamsburg on the road on May 20th at 7 pm. 

Burlington Notre Dame will compete against Assumption on May 20th at 7 pm on the road. 

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team will travel to Mt. Pleasant on Friday, May 17th, for the Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinal at 5:30 pm.

The Mediapolis girls’ team will host Central Lee tonight at 7 pm for the Class 1A Region 1 quarterfinal. 

High School Tennis

Jana Isanta of Mt. Pleasant will participate in the girls’ Class 1A State Singles tournament on May 24th in Iowa City. 

The Fairfield boys’ team will make the trip up to Xavier High School today to see who will advance to the state tournament scheduled in Iowa City for Class 1A.

High School Golf. 

The Wapello district meet was delayed by weather, but the wait was worth it as the thrilling meet saw the top five teams separated by just 12 strokes and Winfield-Mt. Union narrowly exited with the top team score of 350 followed by Keota’s 351. 

The Wolves had three golfers finish in the top 15 with Justin Knipfer leading the team with an 18-hole score of 85, the fifth best on the course. Carter Loyd carded an 86 as Konner Kinneberg finished with an 87. New London’s Coen Fitzpatrick grabbed 32nd place as he shot a 94. 

The boys’ state meet is set to begin on May 20th in Ames with Washington competing as a team for Class 3A at Veenker Memorial Golf Course and Winfield-Mt. Union for Class 1A at Ames Golf and Country Club.

The girls’ Class 1A Region 5 Final will take place at Honey Creek Resort in Moravia today with New London competing as a team.

The West Liberty Country Club will host the girls’ Class 2A Region 5 final today with Olivia Hines of Mediapolis competing as an individual.

The girls’ teams of Mt. Pleasant, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk, and Washington will travel to Solon for their regional meet scheduled for today.

High School Baseball

Mt. Pleasant will stay at home to face off against West Burlington tonight at 7 pm. 

Van Buren County will attempt to get their first win of the season against Keokuk tomorrow, May 16th, at home at 7:30 pm. 

Burlington Notre Dame will travel to Don Bosco on Saturday, May 18th, for an invitational. 

Central Lee will start their season on May 20th on the road against Fort Madison at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will take on New London on May 21st at 5:30 pm.

Mediapolis will square off against Lone Tree on May 21st at 5:30 pm at home. 

High School Softball

Central Lee will travel to Fort Madison on May 20th at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will hit the road to face off against New London at 7 pm on May 21st.

Mt. Pleasant will scrimmage Holy Trinity Catholic tomorrow, May 16th, at home at 6:15 pm.

Mediapolis will square off against Lone Tree on May 21st at 7 pm at home.

Van Buren County will travel to take on Fairfield at 7:30 pm on May 20th.

West Burlington will face off against Keokuk at home on May 20th at 7 pm.

The morning and early afternoon events will see Class 2A and 3A start off the state meet with the girls’ shuttle hurdle relay starting the track events and the girls’ shot put and discus along with the boys’ long jump and high jump kicking off the field events at 9 am.

Running Events

Starting off the meet will be the Fairfield and Washington girls’ teams for the shuttle hurdle relay at 9 am. Fort Madison’s Avery Rump and Fairfield’s Carley Seeley will participate in the 3000-meter run at 9:40 am and for the boys’ Class 2A 3200-meter run, Solomon Zaugg will be competing at 10:10 am.

Kynlee White of Mt. Pleasant will run in the 200-meter dash preliminary at 10:40 am. Mediapolis’ Noah Schmidgall will compete in the boys’ Class 2A 200-meter dash at 11 am and Julian Dear of Fort Madison and Ryan Bair of Keokuk will compete in the Class 3A 200-meter dash.

Mediapolis will have a 4×800 relay team in the girls’ and boys’ finals at 11:20 am and 12:10 pm, respectively. Additionally, Fort Madison and Washington will have both a girls’ and boys’ 4×800 meter relay team.

The girls’ and boys’ 100-meter dash preliminary kicks off the afternoon session with Alex Scott of Mt. Pleasant competing in the girls’ Class 3A race at 12:50 pm, while Landry Haberichter of West Burlington will run for Class 2A and Dear and Drew Campbell of Keokuk will compete for Keokuk at 1:05 pm.

The girls’ Class 3A 400-meter dash will start around 1:20 pm with Camryn Atterberg of Keokuk participating. The boys’ Class 2A race will begin at 1:40 pm with Nathan Schmidgall of Mediapolis and Grant Myhre of Central Lee competing. Seth Shepard of Washington and Mason McLey of Keokuk will run in the Class 3A 400-meter dash.

The boys’ Class 2A and Class 3A shuttle hurdle relay will round out the day for the two classes with Mediapolis running for Class 2A and Fort Madison competing in Class 3A at 2 pm.

Field Events

At 9 am, the Southeast Conference will be heavily represented in the girls’ Class 3A discus event with Kya Goodrich and Savannah Slobodnik competing for Mt. Pleasant, along with Elyse Setterstrom of Fairfield and Brylie Lorence of Fort Madison.

The boys’ Class 2A long jump and Class 3A high jump will also begin at 9 am. Henry Luttenegger will represent Mediapolis in the long jump, while Eli Zillman and Ryan Giberson of Fairfield and Kenden Bowie of Fort Madison will participate in the high jump.

At 11:30 am, Mt. Pleasant’s Josie Gilmore will be in the field for the girls’ Class 3A high jump.
