Mount Pleasant City Council Meeting Tonight

The Mount Pleasant City Council will meet in Regular Session Wednesday,

November 8, 2023, at City Hall, 307 E. Monroe Street, second-floor meeting room at 5:30 p.m.

Body Discovered in Woods in Van Buren

On November 4th, 2023, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office received a report that the body of a deceased male had been discovered in a wooded area near Pittsburg.

A Sheriff’s deputy and the Medical Examiner responded to the scene. The body was sent to the Iowa State Medical Examiner for an autopsy, which is still pending.

The decedent was a 54-year-old male of Davenport, Iowa. No other details from the investigation will be released at this time.

Two Vehicle Accident at Maple Leaf and Cherry

The Mt. Pleasant Police Department responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Maple Leaf Drive and Cherry Street. At approximately 4:40pm on Tuesday, November 7th, officers were dispatched and learned that David Yarber, of Hillsboro, was northbound on Cherry Street in his Dodge when he stopped at the stop sign at Maple Leaf Drive.

David then proceeded north and failed to yield right of way to Betty Aguilar, of Mt. Pleasant, who was traveling westbound on Maple Leaf Drive in her Chevrolet.

Betty was unable to stop in time and proceeded to strike David’s vehicle. This caused disabling damage to both, and they were towed from the scene. Total damage was estimated at $7000.

David Yarber was cited for Failure to Obey Stop Sign and Yield Right of Way.

The MPPD was assisted by Newberry Towing.

MPCSD School Board Meeting Tonight!

There is a special session MPCSD School Board Meeting tonight, Wednesday November 8th. The board will discuss the Iowa Wesleyan property acquisition, as they will receive the due diligence report summary from Dan Culp with Carl A. Nelson Construction Company and Eric Harris with Terracon.

This meeting will start at 6:00pm tonight in the Mt. Pleasant Community High School media center. The public is always welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings.

School Boards

MPCSD: Angela Blint and Michael Hampton have won for the At-Large four year term. Josh Maher beat out Kevin Schrader for a 2 year At-Large position. Sarah Donnolly is elected to the school board after a tight race against Danny Graber and Kevin Sandersfeld. Melinda Huisinga, Aaron Williamson, and Derek Mullin ran uncontested and will be on the board.

NLCSD: Mike McBeth, Jennifer Loyd, and Becky Hays, win positions on the board after retaining the most votes.

NL Public Measure 44-JZ passes.

NL RPS 44-KA passes.

Van Buren: Richard Breckenridge, Dan Smith, Erica Lydolph, and Colby Kreiss, are the winners on the night.

WACO: Megan Waterhouse, Jared Achen

WMU: Klay Edwards, Jason Remick, Robert Quinn

SCC Board of Trustees: Jesse Howard beats out youngster Ryan Coop and Mark Hempen.

Danville: Andrew Taeger, Tanner Thomann, Samantha Dill receive the most votes from Henry County.

Sports, November 8th

High School Football

For 8-player, Winfield-Mt. Union will take on Bishop Garrigan today at 10 am. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will have the call with the pregame show at 9:45 am. Despite Bishop Garrigan coming into the contest as the perceived underdog, Head Coach Scott McCarty knows his team is not relying on their ranking.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck will face off against Bedford today at 1 pm.

In Class A, Madrid will take on West Hancock tomorrow, November 9th, at 10 am followed by East Buchanan and Woodbury Central.

The Class 1A semifinals will take place on Friday, November 10th, with Columbus Catholic facing off against Grundy Center at 10 am and MFL MarMac competing against Underwood at 1 pm. 

The Class 2A semifinals will be on Saturday, November 11th, with Monticello taking on Van Meter at 10 am and Spirit Lake clashing with Central Lyon/George-Little Rock at 1 pm.

Class 3A will also play on Saturday with Bishop Heelan taking on Creston at 4 pm and Williamsburg getting a rematch against Solon.

At 4 pm tomorrow, North Polk will take on Lewis Central with Bondurant-Farrar and Western Dubuque playing at 7 pm.

Class 5A will round out the day on Friday with Valley taking on Southeast Polk at 4 pm and Ankeny Centennial battling with Ankeny at 7 pm.

High School Basketball

The Mt. Pleasant girls team will host a jamboree on November 13th with four games on the slate with each game given a 45 minute time limit.

Lone Tree and Burlington will start off the night with the first game at 6 pm. Mediapolis and Keokuk will follow at 6:45 pm. Winfield-Mt. Union will take on Fairfield at 7:30 pm. Lastly, Mt. Pleasant and WACO will face off at 8:15 pm.

College Football

Iowa State University will face off against BYU this Saturday, November 11th, at 9:15 pm. This is the first meeting between the two teams since 1974.

Iowa will host Rutgers on Saturday at 11 am.

College Basketball

The Iowa State men’s team will face off against Lindenwood tomorrow, November 9th, at 7 pm. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will have the call.

The Iowas State women’s team will take on Drake on November 12th at 2 pm.

The 3rd ranked Iowa women’s team will compete in a top 10 matchup against #8 Virginia Tech tomorrow at 7 pm.

The Iowa men’s team demolished North Dakota 110-68 last night with Payton Sandfort leading the way with 21 points. The Hawkeyes will take on Alabama State on Friday, November 10th, at 7 pm.

The Keokuk Police Department is asking for assistance from the public.
