Panther Marching Band Season Marches Along After Two Competitions on Saturday

The Mt. Pleasant Panther Marching Band fought through the heat wave on Saturday as they battled bravely in Cedar Rapids. With temperatures reaching the 90s, students were told to march in their band t-shirts for concern that the heat might overwhelm.

The highschoolers traveled to the Bands Across the Prairie event where they placed fourth out of nine bands in Class 3A in the morning. Taking a quick trip across town, they took on six other schools in 3A at the Kingston Stadium at the 5 Seasons Marching Invitational. They finished 3rd.

Once again, the color guard was recognized by judges as the best in their class at both competitions. They were awarded the caption of Best Color Guard and has been honored with that at all three of their events this season.

The Mt. Pleasant High school marching band will travel to Kahoka, Missouri, for the 32nd Annual Clark County Parade of Champions on October 7th.

Iowa Ending FY2023 with Nearly 2 Billion Dollars in General Fund

On Wednesday, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced the State of Iowa will end Fiscal Year 2023 with a balance of $1.83 billion in the General Fund, $902 million in reserve funds and $2.74 billion in the Taxpayer Relief Fund.

“Some see a surplus as government not spending enough, but I view it as an over collection from the hard-working men and women of Iowa,” said Gov. Kim Reynolds. “We’ve seen what the powerful combination of growth-oriented policies and fiscal restraint can create, and now it’s time for Iowans to directly receive the benefits. I look forward to cutting taxes again next legislative session and returning this surplus back to where it belongs – the people of Iowa.”

Last week, Gov. Reynolds announced that Iowa’s corporate tax rate will drop to 7.1 percent from 8.4 percent for Tax Year 2024 due to corporate tax receipts exceeding $700 million.

Flags to Fly at Half-Staff for Senator Feinstein

Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff immediately until sunset on the day of interment in honor and remembrance of Senator Dianne Feinstein, who represented California in the United States Senate. Feinstein died the night of September 28, 2023, in her Washington D.C. home at the age of 90. She was elected to the Senate in 1992.

The governor’s order is issued in conjunction with President Joe Biden’s proclamation to lower the United States’ flag to half-staff for the same length of time.

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flags at half-staff for the same length of time.
