Dorothy Jacobs

Dorothy Dale Jacobs, 81, of New London, died Friday, April 7, 2023 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

The funeral service for Mrs. Jacobs will be held at 10:00 am, Aprill 22, 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2727 Cliff Road, Burlington.  President Ryan Sowell will officiate.  Burial will follow the service at Biggsville Cemetery.  Visitation will begin at noon April 21, at Elliott Chapel, New London, with the family receiving friends from 5 – 7 pm.  A memorial has been established for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Welfare Fund.

Justin Steiner

Justin Michael Steiner, age 17 of Mount Pleasant was born May 15, 2005 in Cumberland County, North Carolina.  The son of Arthur Tousignant and Claudia Steiner.  He has lived in North Carolina, Maryland, Washington and California, before coming to live with his parents Arthur and Heidi Tousignant on Christmas 2017 in Iowa.  He participated in wrestling to challenge himself and earned his varsity letter.  Justin was preparing to graduate from Mount Pleasant Community High School in May 2023.  He loved video games, Pokemon, hiking and anything candy, especially anything sour. His sense of humor was sometimes strange.  He had a knack for remembering names and usually in a polite manner of greeting anyone he ran into, whether he knew them or not.  Justin died Sunday, April 2, 2023 at his home at the age of 17 years.

He is survived by his parents, Arthur and Heidi Tousignant of Mount Pleasant and Claudia Steiner of California; half brothers and sisters, Aaron Mussert of Texas, Keith Shock of Colorado, Emily Williams of Washington, Catrina Hudson of North Carolina, Mary Diaz of Iowa, Clarindia Whitfield of Arkansas, James Tousignant and Christina Tousignant both of North Carolina, Franklin Tousignant of Iowa, and step brothers and sister, Julius-Caesar Wilson of Texas, Damion Tousignant of North Carolina, Alex Wilson of Italy, Ariana Fuentes of Oklahoma, and  Abraham Wilson of Iowa.

Celebration of Life Memorial will be 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant.  Visitation will be Saturday from noon to service time.  A memorial fund has been established to help cover funeral expenses.  Messages and tributes may be directed to www.powellfuneralhomes.com.

Danville Woman Arrested on Burglary Charges

On April 1, 2023, deputies took a report of a burglary of a residence at 9311 Lakeview Drive. The victim advised deputies that he found $2300 missing from a safe in his office. The victim advised deputies that he viewed surveillance footage from his security cameras and observed a female enter his residence. The victim identified the suspect as Ellie Reeves.  Reeves was also observed on camera standing in front of the safe that the money was taken from. On April 3, 2023 a detective spoke with Reeves and she admitted to entering the residence and the office where the money was taken from.

On April 8, 2023, Ellie Ann Reeves, age 35, of Danville, IA was charged with Burglary 3rd Degree at the Des Moines County Jail.

Rose Marie Becker

Rose Marie Becker, 73, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2023, near West Point, Iowa.

She was Born on September 10, 1949, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Dorothy (Nolte) Hellige. On November 18, 1972, she married Ross Wayne Becker in Fort Madison, Iowa. Last November they celebrated 50 years together. They entered into eternal life together on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

She is survived by her son: Gerald Wayne “Jerry” Becker of Farmington; two grandsons: John and Lloyd Becker; granddaughter: Elizabeth Anderson; brother: Arnold (Becky) Hellige of Fort Madison; three sisters: Mary Ann (Joseph) Wenke of Donnellson, Genevieve Martin of Venice, Florida and Pauline Ann (Robert) Smith of Alexandria, Missouri; sister in-law: Jeannie Hellige of Fort Madison. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother: Virgil Hellige and brother-in-law: Walter Martin.

Rose Marie was a 1968 graduate of Aquinas High School. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington. She was a secretary at Iowa State Penitentiary for two years and retired from Barker Wire in Keosauqua after working there for twenty-eight years.

A visitation for Ross and Rosie will begin at 12:00 noon, Thursday, April 13, 2023, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial for Ross and Rosie will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2023, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington, with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial for Ross and Rosie will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2023, at the Keokuk National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made out to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Marjorie M. Helt, 69, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of New London, died Monday, April 10, 2023 at Savannah Heights in Mt. Pleasant. Services are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

Dennis J. Swarthout

Dennis J. Swarthout, 72, died Sunday, December 25, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Dennis was born at Chariton, Iowa on August 2, 1950, to Jean and Darlene (Luke) Swarthout. He graduated with the 1968 class of Chariton High School and continued his education at Indian Hills for computer programing.

On June 27, 1969, at the First Christian Church in Chariton, Dennis married Becky Taylor.  While living in Chariton he worked for Hy-Vee and Jerry and Ed’s Skelly Service Station. They lived in Indianola moving to Mount Pleasant in 1984, when Dennis became the Director of Administration for A & D Management. The couple moved to Salem in 2000.  Dennis enjoyed golfing, turkey and deer hunting, and putting puzzles together. More than anything, Dennis loved spending time with his family. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Noon Rotary and National Wildlife Turkey Federation. Dennis was involved with Junior Achievement, coached little league and was an avid baseball fan.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Becky; two sons, Craig Swarthout of Mount Pleasant and Derek (Amy) Swarthout of Aiken, SC; three grandchildren, Megan (Will) Holbrook, Kelsey (Bowen) Smith, and Ryan Swarthout; one brother Doug (Collette) Swarthout of Chariton; and two sisters, Cheryl (Ken) Kline of Chariton and Cyndi Wilkinson of Cheyenne, WY.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Jim Swarthout.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 – 4:00, Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the V.F.W. at 103 South Jackson Street, Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Those wishing to express their sympathy are encouraged to purchase a tree in Dennis’ memory. The Arbor Day Foundation plants the trees in the forest of greatest need and the Swarthout family will receive a certificate. The trees can be purchased through Powell Funeral Homes website on the page of Dennis’ obituary. The Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel is caring for Dennis and his family.

 

Iowa Wesleyan’s Women’s Track and Field Claims Two School Records

Iowa Wesleyan- The Tigers Outdoor Track and Field teams competed at the Rittgers Invitational last weekend with the men finishing in 2nd place and the women breaking a couple of school records.

Lilly Garnsey claimed the school record in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase with a time of 12-minutes and 51.97-seconds. Her time was good enough for a 2nd place finish. Garnsey had already broken the school record a week ago with a time of 12-minutes and 52.12-seconds at the Mustang Open.

Zoi Smith took the other school record in the pole vault. In her run last Friday, she had broken the school record once and then reset her own mark with a vault of 2.15 meters or 7 feet.

The Tigers will be competing at the Cornell Invitational on April 15th.

KILJ News Director Prepares to “Sign-Off”

May 31 will be Theresa Rose’s last day with KILJ Radio.  She will be retiring after 37 years with the Mount Pleasant station.  Rose began her career with KILJ as a daytime deejay in 1982. For 18 years she worked in almost all aspects of the operation before working elsewhere for four years and then returned to KILJ in 2004 as the news director. Rose has always told people her teachers in school said she spent too much time visiting with her neighbors but that she was lucky enough to make a career of doing just that.
