Danville Woman Arrested on Burglary Charges

On April 1, 2023, deputies took a report of a burglary of a residence at 9311 Lakeview Drive. The victim advised deputies that he found $2300 missing from a safe in his office. The victim advised deputies that he viewed surveillance footage from his security cameras and observed a female enter his residence. The victim identified the suspect as Ellie Reeves.  Reeves was also observed on camera standing in front of the safe that the money was taken from. On April 3, 2023 a detective spoke with Reeves and she admitted to entering the residence and the office where the money was taken from.

On April 8, 2023, Ellie Ann Reeves, age 35, of Danville, IA was charged with Burglary 3rd Degree at the Des Moines County Jail.

Rose Marie Becker

Rose Marie Becker, 73, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2023, near West Point, Iowa.

She was Born on September 10, 1949, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Dorothy (Nolte) Hellige. On November 18, 1972, she married Ross Wayne Becker in Fort Madison, Iowa. Last November they celebrated 50 years together. They entered into eternal life together on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

She is survived by her son: Gerald Wayne “Jerry” Becker of Farmington; two grandsons: John and Lloyd Becker; granddaughter: Elizabeth Anderson; brother: Arnold (Becky) Hellige of Fort Madison; three sisters: Mary Ann (Joseph) Wenke of Donnellson, Genevieve Martin of Venice, Florida and Pauline Ann (Robert) Smith of Alexandria, Missouri; sister in-law: Jeannie Hellige of Fort Madison. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother: Virgil Hellige and brother-in-law: Walter Martin.

Rose Marie was a 1968 graduate of Aquinas High School. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington. She was a secretary at Iowa State Penitentiary for two years and retired from Barker Wire in Keosauqua after working there for twenty-eight years.

A visitation for Ross and Rosie will begin at 12:00 noon, Thursday, April 13, 2023, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial for Ross and Rosie will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2023, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington, with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial for Ross and Rosie will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2023, at the Keokuk National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made out to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Dorothy Jacobs & Marjorie Helt Pending With Elliot Chapel

Dorothy D. Jacobs, 81, of New London, died Friday, April 7, 2023 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.  Services are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

Marjorie M. Helt, 69, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of New London, died Monday, April 10, 2023 at Savannah Heights in Mt. Pleasant. Services are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

Dennis J. Swarthout

Dennis J. Swarthout, 72, died Sunday, December 25, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Dennis was born at Chariton, Iowa on August 2, 1950, to Jean and Darlene (Luke) Swarthout. He graduated with the 1968 class of Chariton High School and continued his education at Indian Hills for computer programing.

On June 27, 1969, at the First Christian Church in Chariton, Dennis married Becky Taylor.  While living in Chariton he worked for Hy-Vee and Jerry and Ed’s Skelly Service Station. They lived in Indianola moving to Mount Pleasant in 1984, when Dennis became the Director of Administration for A & D Management. The couple moved to Salem in 2000.  Dennis enjoyed golfing, turkey and deer hunting, and putting puzzles together. More than anything, Dennis loved spending time with his family. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Noon Rotary and National Wildlife Turkey Federation. Dennis was involved with Junior Achievement, coached little league and was an avid baseball fan.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Becky; two sons, Craig Swarthout of Mount Pleasant and Derek (Amy) Swarthout of Aiken, SC; three grandchildren, Megan (Will) Holbrook, Kelsey (Bowen) Smith, and Ryan Swarthout; one brother Doug (Collette) Swarthout of Chariton; and two sisters, Cheryl (Ken) Kline of Chariton and Cyndi Wilkinson of Cheyenne, WY.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Jim Swarthout.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 – 4:00, Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the V.F.W. at 103 South Jackson Street, Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Those wishing to express their sympathy are encouraged to purchase a tree in Dennis’ memory. The Arbor Day Foundation plants the trees in the forest of greatest need and the Swarthout family will receive a certificate. The trees can be purchased through Powell Funeral Homes website on the page of Dennis’ obituary. The Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel is caring for Dennis and his family.

 

Iowa Wesleyan’s Women’s Track and Field Claims Two School Records

Iowa Wesleyan- The Tigers Outdoor Track and Field teams competed at the Rittgers Invitational last weekend with the men finishing in 2nd place and the women breaking a couple of school records.

Lilly Garnsey claimed the school record in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase with a time of 12-minutes and 51.97-seconds. Her time was good enough for a 2nd place finish. Garnsey had already broken the school record a week ago with a time of 12-minutes and 52.12-seconds at the Mustang Open.

Zoi Smith took the other school record in the pole vault. In her run last Friday, she had broken the school record once and then reset her own mark with a vault of 2.15 meters or 7 feet.

The Tigers will be competing at the Cornell Invitational on April 15th.

KILJ News Director Prepares to “Sign-Off”

May 31 will be Theresa Rose’s last day with KILJ Radio.  She will be retiring after 37 years with the Mount Pleasant station.  Rose began her career with KILJ as a daytime deejay in 1982. For 18 years she worked in almost all aspects of the operation before working elsewhere for four years and then returned to KILJ in 2004 as the news director. Rose has always told people her teachers in school said she spent too much time visiting with her neighbors but that she was lucky enough to make a career of doing just that.

High School Track and Field

WACO will be traveling to Lone Tree to compete in a meet today.

The boys teams of Danville and Winfield-Mt Union will travel to Wapello to compete in a meet tomorrow, April 11th.

The girls teams of Danville, Winfield-Mt. Union, New London, Mt. Pleasant, and Central Lee will be competing in the Timm Lamb Pen City Relays tomorrow.

The Central Lee boys will be competing at the Fairfield Meet tomorrow.

The Mt. Pleasant boys team will be competing in the Denny White Relays on April 13th.

High School Soccer

The Mt. Pleasant girls will be at home tonight against Keokuk.

The Mt. Pleasant boys team will face off against Keokuk today on the road.

The WACO boys soccer team will host Wapello tonight.

The Central Lee boys’ soccer team will take on Mediapolis tomorrow, April 11th.

Winfield-Mt. Union’s next competition will be on April 13th against Wapello.

The New London boys and girls team will face off against Wapello tomorrow, April 11th.

The Mt. Pleasant girls team will travel to face off in the Fort Madison golf meet today with the boys going to Keokuk tonight.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The Tiger softball team will travel to face off against William Penn tomorrow, April 11th, with game one at 4 pm. KILJ will be on the call with pregame at 3:45 pm.

The Tiger baseball team’s win streak ends at 6 games after splitting their weekend doubleheader to Crowley’s Ridge College. In game one, The Tigers won 8-4 as the offense struck quickly as they put up 6 runs in the first two innings. Derek Marrufo had a stellar game as went 3 for 4 with a double and accounted for 3 RBIs. Holvin Catala picked up 2 RBIs and Drew Cook tallied one RBI. Luis Ayesa picked up the complete game win as he struck out 8. Game two was the Pioneers’ turn to score early as they put up 4 runs in the first inning and the Tigers couldn’t catch up in time, losing 10-6. Carlos Vicente picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly; David Amaya, Marrufo, and Sage Bonner all picked up RBI doubles with Philip Guerrero also tallying an RBI. Pedro Ramirez fanned 9 batters in the loss on the mound. The Tigers will be on the road tomorrow taking on Graceland University in a doubleheader with game one taking place at 1 pm.

The Tiger golf team’s next event will be the SCC Invitational today.

The Tigers outdoor track and field teams competed at the Rittgers Invitational over the weekend and the men’s team took 2nd place with the women finishing in 6th out of 8. Angel Lottie won the men’s 400 meter dash with Daron Jackson finishing in 2nd place. Jabez Rivers won the 400 meter hurdles. KeRon Blackwell leaped 6 feet 5.5 inches to win the men’s high jump. Daron Jackson won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet 5.25 inches. Bri Hunter finished in 2nd place in the shot put with a heave of 41 feet 11.25 inches.
