Tony Von Broecker (final arrangements)

Tony Von Broeker, 74, of New London, formerly of Mt. Union, Iowa, died Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospital, West Burlington.  He was born October 2, 1948 in Mt. Pleasant to Frederick David and Mable Alice McVey Broeker.

He attended grade school in Mt. Union, high school at Winfield-Mt.Union, and earned his GED while serving in the United States Navy during the Vietnam war.

He married Patricia Savage; they later divorced.  His life partner was Florence Holmes; she died January 1, 2021.

Tony was a journeyman by trade.  He enjoyed playing cards, watching the Chicago Cubs, spending time with family, and was a member of New London VFW Post 7641.

Survivors include his children Tony (Nickey Long) Broeker II of Burlington, Iowa and Kathryn Broeker of Mineral Point, Wisconsin; one brother David Wynn (Patricia) Broeker of Pekin, Illinois; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Michael Edward Broeker and sister Deanna Lynn Vensland.

According to his wishes his body has been cremated.   A visitation will be held from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Elliott Chapel, New London.  Inurnment will immediately follow at Trinity Cemetery, rural Mt. Union with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard.  A memorial has been established to help with funeral expenses.   Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.

State Qualifiers for Girls’ Wrestling in Southeastern Iowa

Prep Girls’ Wrestling- In the inaugural year of sanctioned girls’ wrestling for the state of Iowa, Southeastern Iowa will have plenty of representatives in Coralville at the Xtream Arena. Here are some of the wrestlers and what place they finished in at the Regional Qualifier to make it to state.

Ella McNamee from Mt. Pleasant will be representing the Panthers in the 105-pound weight class sporting a 23-4 record going into the state competition. She finished in 3rd place after defeating Jacey Mason of Davenport by fall. Stay tuned to KILJ for an interview with McNamee.

WACO has three  representatives going to state, including two 2nd place finishers. Rylee Rice at 110-pounds dominated the competition making it to the Championship match, but fell to Kate Seery of Linn-Mar by decision to claim 2nd place. Bralyyn Wagler, who is 29-5 on the season, was the other 2nd place finish with a narrow defeat against Trinity Young of Linn-Marr by fall. Wagler will be competing in the 235-pound weight class. Grace Fort at the 190-pound weight class will be the last Warrior representing WACO, as she placed 4th defeating Zenlynn Lee by fall earlier in the tournament earning a no contest in the fourth place match. Wapello will have one wrestler compete at state, as Madi Lundvall narrowly defeated Jacey Mason of Davenport by decision in the 4th place match. She will be competing in the 105-pound weight class.

Teegan Sulentich of Washington dominated the 155-pound weight class for much of the year sporting a 30-5 record going into state. She earned 2nd place after falling to Jorie Hanenburg of North Scott in the championship bout.

Fort Madison had a Regional Qualifier champion in Hailey Kemper at the 100-pound weight class. The Bloodhound went 3-0 in the tournament and defeated Gabi Robertson of Mid-Prairie by fall in the championship match.

Mid-Prairie will have three other wrestlers represent the Golden Hawks at state. Ellie Brenneman at 135 pounds claimed 2nd place after falling in the championship bout to Dakota Whitman of Independence. She is 35-9 on the season. Grace Conway will be competing in the 140-pound weight class after winning the 3rd place match by fall over Josephine Budederi of Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Lastly, Ellie Callahan defeated Joscelyn Stricker of Cedar Rapids Kennedy by a 6-2 decision in the 170-pound 3rd place match.

Louisa-Muscatine will have Molly Bramble compete in the 235-pound weight class after finishing in 4th place.

Keokuk will have Jalyiah Garder compete in the 155-pound weight class after capturing 4th place in a no contest.

Jasmine Luedtke won the 110-pound championship match for Ottumwa, and Deliah Subsin will be competing at 190-pounds for the Bulldogs after going 3-1, only falling in the championship match by fall to Halley Beaudet of Dallas Center-Grimes.

The State Championship will be taking place Thursday and Friday, February 2nd and 3rd, KILJ will have results as they come in.

Music InMotion Invitational Coming Up

February 4 Mount Pleasant will host the 29th Annual Music InMotion Invitational at the High School beginning at 8 am with the Middle School choirs. Those awards will be at 12:25 pm.  The High School performances begin at 1 pm with.  Following the final afternoon performance at 5:45 pm, the Mount Pleasant Middle School show choir, Chain Reaction will perform at 6:15 pm and the daytime awards will be announced at 6:40 pm.  The evening finals begin at 7:45 pm.  The day will wrap up with the InMotion performance at 10:45 and then the final awards at 11:15 pm.

Admission is $10. Concessions will be available on site. 18 show choirs are expected to participate.

Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Constance Gartin

Constance L. Gartin, 90, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Friday, January 27, 2023, at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Sports, January 30th

High School Basketball

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team fell to Mediapolis over the weekend 74-55 on the road. The offense was on full display for the Bulldogs as they knocked down nine three-pointers in the game. Liz Lane finished with a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The boys’ team extended their win streak to 9 games despite a slow start against the Bulldogs in a 60-43 final. Four starters finished with double-digit points with Payton Hagans totaling 16 points, Owen Vansickle cashed in 15 points, Aaiden Ashton finished with 11 points, and Nate Stroud scored 10 points. The girls team will be facing off against Fairfield tomorrow, January 31st, at home, while the boys’ will be going against Regina Catholic on the road tomorrow. KILJ will be on the call for the boys’ game with pregame at 6:15 pm.

Central Lee will be celebrating senior night tomorrow against Holy Trinity Catholic with the girls’ playing at 6 pm and the boys to follow.

New London will travel to take on Burlington Notre Dame tomorrow with the girls going at 6 pm.

The Danville Bears will be facing off against West Burlington tomorrow.

WACO will be at home against Lone Tree tomorrow.

The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves will be hosting Highland tomorrow.

High School Wrestling

The first official girls’ regional qualifier is in the books with a couple of wrestlers from Southeast Iowa earning their way to state. Ella McNamee of Mt. Pleasant went 5-1 on the day including two byes as she took third place over Jacey Mason by fall. Rylee Rice and Bralyyn Wagler of WACO finished in second place in their respective weight classes as they both went 4-1 on the day including their byes. Grace Fort of WACO snuck into state with a fourth place finish as she defeated Zenlynn Lee of Mt. Pleasant earlier in the evening by fall resulting in a no contest. Hailey Kemper of Fort Madison took first place by fall, defeating Gabi Robertson of Mid-Prairie. The State Tournament will take place on February 2nd and 3rd. The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team competed at the Southern Iowa Classic over the weekend. Landon Beckler went 2-3, winning both of his matches by fall, on the weekend finishing in third. Ramzy Davis worked his way through the Consolation Bracket to win fifth place by major decision. William Birdsell was the best finisher for the Panthers taking second place on a 2-1 record for the weekend. The next competition for the boys’ team will be at the Class 2A District 9 postseason meet. To make it to state, wrestlers in Class 1A or 2A must finish in first or second-place and third-place finishers in Class 3A District Tournaments will also qualify.

The Regional Duals for boys’ wrestling has been set with Burlington Notre Dame going against Knoxville in the first round with the winner matching up against Williamsburg for Class 2A tomorrow.

Mt. Pleasant will travel to face off against Keokuk tomorrow.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The women’s basketball team improves to 5-0 in Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) play after defeating Northern New Mexico College 68-46 in day two of the Bacone Classic. The Tigers bullied the Eagles on the boards collecting 21 offensive rebounds in the winning effort. Isabell West finished with a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. The Tigers will be back in action February 3rd at the Crowley’s Ridge Classic.

Gacoby Jones could not miss from deep against Northern New Mexico College hitting seven three-pointers and scoring 32 points in the 80-52 thrashing of the Eagles. The Tigers allowed only 12 points in the first half. The 23rd-ranked Tigers improved their win streak to 20 games and 21-1 on the season. The Tigers will be tested against #20 Florida College in a CAC Classic on February 3rd.

The men’s wrestling team competed in the Pat “Flash” Flanagan Open. Quinten Aney led the Tigers with a fourth place finish going 4-2 on the weekend after fighting his way to the third place match through the consolation bracket. The Tigers will be facing off against William Penn University tomorrow on the road.

The women’s wrestling team finished 10th out of 20 at the Spire Classic with three wrestlers finishing in the top three. #18 Sydney Manos went 4-1 in the tournament winning the third place match by fall. Zoi Smith was 2-0 going into the championship match, but fell to #17 Alisha Van Scoy by a 14-9 decision to place 2nd. Isabelle Hawley was the best finisher for the Tigers as she went undefeated in the Classic and won by fall in the championship bout to finish in first place. They will be competing in the Grand View Open on February 4th.

Lily Garnsey finished in 4th place in the women’s 5,000 meter race  at the Grinnell Invitational with a new school record of 20 minutes and 11 seconds, which is tops in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA). The team of Faith Younce, Izela Avalos, Emily Gehring, and Garnsey won the women’s 4,000 meter distance relay in a thrilling come-from-behind finish with a time of 14 minutes and 44 seconds. KeRon Blackwell tied for second in the men’s high jump. Daron Jackson finished in second for the men’s triple jump with a leap of 42 feet 8.75 inches, which is third in school history and in the NSAA. Jabez Rivers, in the men’s 60 meter hurdles, finished in 3rd place with a time of 8.82 seconds, which ties his mark for second in school history. The Tigers will be back in action February 1st at the Grand View Field Meet, which will have only throwers and jumpers compete.
