Secretary Pate, bipartisan county auditor group push back against election disinformation

DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate and his bipartisan Auditors Advisory Group are uniting to dispel election misinformation and disinformation ahead of the 2022 general election. There has been a recent increase in the spread of false claims regarding elections in our state, despite there being no evidence of intrusions into Iowa’s election systems. Secretary Pate and the county auditors also stand united in their support of the bipartisan teams of poll workers that will work at voting sites this November.

“Iowans vote on paper ballots, and you cannot hack a paper ballot. We have numerous security measures and checks and balances in place to ensure the integrity of the vote. That includes Voter ID, public testing of voting equipment prior to the election, post-election audits and wide array of cybersecurity protections,” Secretary Pate and the Auditors Advisory Group said in a joint statement.

“You also have your friends and neighbors staffing the polling sites-in a bipartisan fashion. They are standing up and providing a great service for our state and nation and deserve respect. We encourage all eligible Iowans to register to vote and participate in elections, and we want voters to know that we are dedicated to protecting their vote,” Secretary Pate and the Auditors Advisory Group added.

Secretary Pate’s office developed an Election Security in Iowa webpage to counter misinformation and disinformation. It includes a Myth vs. Fact section, a detailed breakdown of the many security measures Iowa has put in place to protect elections, and a five-minute video that details how ballots and election equipment are maintained.

“Iowa is one of the top three states in the nation for election administration and that’s because we have a dedicated team of professionals in every county. Election cybersecurity remains a race without a finish line, and we are committed to staying ahead in this race,” Secretary Pate and the Auditors Advisory Group said.

The members of Secretary Pate’s bipartisan Auditors Advisory Group and the county each represents include:

  • Amanda Waske-Ringgold
  • Carol Robertson-Mills
  • Denise Beyer-Allamakee
  • Denise Fraise-Lee
  • Hayley Rippel-Benton
  • Jamie Fitzgerald-Polk
  • Jennifer Garms-Clayton
  • Melissa Wellhausen-Page
  • Rhonda Deters-Grundy
  • Ryan Dokter-Sioux
  • Sue Lloyd-Buena Vista

Sports, September 16th

High School Football

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers are at home tonight to face off against West Burlington, who is also 0-3 after losing to Mediapolis last Friday. Jacob Richtman is top 10 in Class 4A for every meaningful passing statistic, while the Falcons are led by junior quarterback Caden Schwenker, who presents a dual threat with over 500 total yards and 5 total touchdowns through the first three games. Tune into KILJ for the game, kickoff scheduled for 7:30 pm, pregame at 7:15 pm.

WACO will face off with Iowa Valley tonight.  The Warriors are led by a pair of seniors in Isaac Oswald and Simeon Reichenbach, while Iowa Valley depends on dual threat quarterback Evan Kearney, who leads 8-man football with 30 total touchdowns on the season. This game is scheduled to start at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union tries to right the ship against HLV, and New London will celebrate homecoming against English Valleys. Both games scheduled to start at 7 pm.

Fort Madison will defend their home field against Washington, while Fairfield will travel to play Knoxville. The Bloodhounds are led by Aidan Boyer, who has tossed 457 yards and four touchdowns. The Demons will lean on talented senior running back Tayven Stuart.

High School Volleyball

In a historic night for Winfield-Mt. Union, the Wolves handled Lone Tree in straight sets: 25-6, 25-15, 25-18. Bradie Buffington led the team in kills with 13, Keetyn Townsley tallied 5 aces and 14 digs, but most importantly a new school record was captured by Keely Malone after last night’s 25 assist performance. She passed Samantha Walker’s record of 1175 set in the 2001 season; Malone now has 1187 assists with plenty of games left to add on to that total. The Wolves will be competing in the SEISC Tournament next Thursday, September 22nd.

WACO captured their tenth win of the season after defeating Pekin in straight sets with the closest game being 25-11 in the first set. Ellah Kissell led the team in kills with 14 while Grace Coble paced the team with 28 assists.

The New London Tigers defeat Mediapolis in a competitive match yesterday, ultimately, still winning in straight sets: 26-24, 25-17, and 25-18. The Tigers next competition is tomorrow at the North Mahaska Invite.

In a match that needed all five sets to determine a winner, it was Holy Trinity Catholic that came up just short as West Burlington won the fifth set 15-6. After dropping the first set, the Crusaders came back and won the second and third set before the Falcons, led by Sophia Armstrong’s 22 kill performance, were able to pull out the win. The Crusaders next game will be against Fort Madison on Monday, September 19th.

Mt. Pleasant’s next game will be tomorrow, September 17th, when the Panthers compete at the Ottumwa Invitational.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The Tiger volleyball team will be competing in the UHSP Tournament in St. Louis starting today and finishing up on the 17th, with their first match taking place at 5 pm against College of the Ozarks.

The Tigers football team will be at home this Saturday, September 17th, to play Finlandia University at noon. KILJ will be on the call with pregame set to start at 11:45 am.

Both Tiger soccer teams will travel to clash with William Woods University tomorrow, September 17th. The Women’s team plays at 1 pm, while the Men’s team will play at 3:30 pm.

After talking to Coach Davis yesterday on Tiger Nation, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Lily Garnsey, Runner of the Week, turn in faster times as the season progresses.

“Actually it was a little slower than we actually anticipated, the course was a little hillier than the course description was. Part of the reason we went there because we thought it was going to provide faster times. Obviously, its her first time winning the award, so it’s hard to complain, but I know she was still disappointed with the time a little bit after. I think that’s unique thing about our group, you know, that was a lifetime best for her but she put in a lot of work over the summer. She’s working harder than anyone in our conference.”

Ms. Anzora will be visiting the First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, September 27. • Hunger Ministries: I was hungry and you gave me food
  • Clean Water/Environmental Justice: I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink
  • Immigration/Migration/Refugee Welcome: I was a stranger and you welcomed me
  • Poverty Alleviation: I was naked and you gave me clothing
  • Health and Wellness: I was sick and you took care of me
  • Racism/Systems of Oppression and Violence: I was in prison and you visited me

This year the Peacemakers come from seven different countries or regions, including Cameroon, El Salvador, Madagascar, Malawi, Israel/Palestine, Rwanda, and Tuvalu (Pacific Islands).
