Mount Pleasant Fire Department responded to the South Park apartment complex on South Main Street Sunday afternoon. The call came in at 4:30 pm from a lower level apartment in building 4. Firefighters arrived on scene to find the kitchen on fire. They were able to get in and quickly extinguish the blaze that apparently began with the stove. Heavy smoke and fire damage was contained to the apartment. No one was injured. The fire remains under investigation. 2 engines, a command vehicle and 11 firefighters were on the scene for about one hour.
$10,000 Lottery Ticket Purchased in Mount Pleasant
A ticket sold at the Big 10 Mart in Bettendorf for Friday night’s Mega Millions drawing is worth two million dollars. It’s one of six tickets sold across the country that matched all but the so-called “Mega Ball.” The person who bought the ticket in Bettendorf paid the extra dollar, doubling the payout to two million. Four other tickets sold in Iowa for Friday night’s drawing are worth 10-thousand dollars each for picking the “Mega Ball” number and four of the five other numbers. Those four tickets with a 10-thousand dollar prize were sold in Mount Pleasant at the HyVee Gas Newton, Manchester and Storm Lake.

Gladys J. Burnham (final arrangements)
Gladys J. Burnham, 96, of Lockridge passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at her home.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at 1 p.m. at the First Augustana Lutheran Church in Lockridge with Rev. Jerleen Schlesser officiating. Burial will follow in the Lockridge Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant where the family will be present from 6 to 7:30 that evening. Memorials may be directed to the First Augustana Lutheran Church or to the Lockridge Cemetery in her memory.

Murder Trial Moved to Davenport
Jefferson County District Court Judge Shawn Showers has rescheduled the trial for one of the two teens accused in the November 2021 murder of a Fairfield teacher. Jeremey Goodale’s jury trial is now scheduled for December 5th at the Scott County Courthouse in Davenport. All pre-trial hearings will still take place in Jefferson County, despite the teen’s criminal trials being moved out of the district.
Shirley Joann Husak
Shirley Joann Husak, 82, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, July 27th, 2022, surrounded by her family.
Shirley was born on December 2nd 1939 to Bennie Allen Himes and Dorothy Marie Himes (Vestal) in Dean, Iowa. Shirley was the eldest of four children, (Shirley, Wilbur, Barb, Danny). Shirley proudly served and fulfilled the role of “Sis”.
Shirley was a graduate of the class of 1959 at Farmington High School.
In 1958, when her family moved to Farmington, Shirley met the love of her life Richard Losey. Shirley and Richard went on to be married in 1960 and had three children together, Kent, Rickie (Rick), and Michael (Mike). In 1979 Shirley & Richard built the brick home of their dreams at 405 Olive Street, Farmington.
After the abrupt passing of Richard Losey in 1983, Shirley continued to lead a life of raising and supporting her family. In 1992 Shirley married John Husak. Shirley and John enjoyed dancing, cooking, baking, camping, traveling, and spending time with Shirley’s family.
During her school years, as well after graduating, Shirley worked at The Bridge Cafe as a waitress. Shirley spoke fondly of her time at the Bridge Café. Shirley later worked in manufacturing facilities, including Schaeffer Pen and Gleason’s in Fort Madison, IA. Shirley also worked as cook at Harmony Schools where she was able to enjoy seeing her sons and grandkids come through the lunch line, as well as all of their classmates.
Shirley was renowned for her cooking and baking abilities. People often requested Shirley’s goodies. Shirley enjoyed many things: camping, fishing, feeding and watching her Hummingbirds, watching her children & grandchildren’s sporting and school activities, walking with her friends, playing cards, and preparing delicious holiday meals for her family.
Shirley was preceded in death by Richard Losey, John Husak; her parents: Bennie & Dorothy Himes; sister: Barbara Counts (Himes); brother: Danny Himes; niece: Amy Wagner, and many good friends and family. Shirley is survived by her three sons, and brother: Wilbur; three grandsons: Wyatt Losey, Nathan Losey, Chancy Losey, and three great-grandchildren: Briley Losey, Claire Losey, and Cameron Losey, (Nathan & Hannah Losey) of Keosauqua, Iowa.
Visitation will be after 12:00 noon Monday, August 1, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral home in Farmington, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. that evening.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington, with Pastor Dawn Butler officiating.
Burial will be at Center Chapel.
