Fair Time is Here!
“Carnival Lights and Country Nights”….That’s the theme for the 2022 Greater Jefferson County Fair. This year’s fair kicks off Monday and runs thru June 27 at the Fairgrounds on the west edge of Fairfield. The grandstand entertainment is highlighted by quad races, truck and tractor pulls, demo derby, fireworks and the carnival. Fairgoers will enjoy all the traditional fun, the Queen contest, Bill Riley Talent Show and, of course, all the 4H shows and exhibits. KILJ will be sharing the daily schedule of activities and judging results thru out next week. Check out the KILJ calendar of events.
Mount Pleasant Street Construction Update
At approx. 6:00 A.M. Monday Jones Contracting will begin paving the North side of Madison St. between Adams St. & Main St. First thing Monday Kinney & Sons Excavating & Grading will be closing Madison St. Jefferson to Jackson St. This will also shut off access to the Alley North and South from Madison St. Kinney & Sons will be removing the street surface, finish installing the drainage structures, cutting the street to subgrade, installing subdrain and placing the modified subbase. Weather permitting by the end of the week the block should be ready to turn over to Jones Contracting to begin placing the new pavement. Jones Contracting’s next phase of the project will be to start replacing sidewalks, approaches and colored boulevard. All three blocks will be closed at this time but all cross streets Adams, Main, Jefferson and Jackson are still accessible and will stay accessible.

Arrest Made in Pool Shooting Case
Saturday police arrested a man for the shooting at the West Burlington pool. Terence Gordan was arrested in Cedar Rapids after police there received a tip about his location in an apartment.
Officials say Gordan is charged with going armed with intent, assault causing serious injury, willful injury-serious injury, and attempted murder. On June 14 at approximately 4:44 p.m., the West Burlington Police Department received reports of shots being fired at the West Burlington Municipal Pool. Upon arrival, law officers found Devontae Richardson, 28, bleeding from a single gunshot wound to the face. Richardson was transported to the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center. Eventually, Richardson was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. No other injuries were reported related to the shooting.
Gordan is being held without bond, pending court appearance. West Burlington Police thank the public for helping locate Gordan.

Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant Varsity Softball had a pair of games on the road against Holy Trinity Catholic Friday night. The Panthers won the first game by a score of 15-10 for their second win of the season. Mount Pleasant was defeated 7-5 in the second game of the night. Panther Softball will be back on the field Monday night at home for a doubleheader against Washington. The first game will start at 5:30 PM with the second set to begin at 7:30 PM.
New London
New London Varsity Baseball defeated the Davenport North Wildcats by a score of 4-3 Friday night. Senior Josh Catala went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Freshman Memphis Watson was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Sophomore Brendan Richey pitched 5 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and striking out 2. Tiger Baseball will be back on the field on Monday at 5:30 PM as they will go on the road for a matchup with Danville.
New London Varsity Softball was defeated by Wapello by a score of 10-1 on Friday night. Wapello sophomore Emily Hemphill went 2 for 4 with a triple. While Wapello junior Livia Fuller pitched 4 full innings, allowing 2 hits with a walk and striking out 2. Tiger Softball will be back on the field on Monday night for a doubleheader at Danville. The first game is scheduled for 5:30 PM with the second to follow at 7:00 PM.
Iowa Wesleyan Men’s Basketball
Iowa Wesleyan Men’s Basketball will host a 3 vs. 3 basketball tournament on July 4th at Ruble Arena on the Iowa Wesleyan University campus in Mount Pleasant. All ages are welcome from 3rd grade on through adult ages. There will be a DJ playing music during the event and concession stand availability. The cost to enter is $60 per team. Each team must have at least 3 players with a maximum of 4 players. Payment is required before the start of the first game. Checks can be made payable to Iowa Wesleyan Men’s Basketball. Each athlete must sign a waiver of liability and complete a health information form prior to competing. That form can be sent via email (listed below).

Carol L. Dustman
Carol L. Dustman, 67, of Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, October 18, 2021 at Park Place Elder Living in Mt. Pleasant.
A memorial funeral service for Carol will be 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 23 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. The Reverend David Bracht-Wagner, Senior Pastor, will officiate. The family will greet friends at a luncheon in the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the memorial service.
