She graduated from Milton High School in 1945, She met the love of her life in school, Alvin Russell Trachsel. They were married on August 8, 1946 in Milton, He passed away on April 7, 2015. After graduating, Nadine worked at Loewenberg Bakery and Morrell’s both in Ottumwa. Russell and Nadine settled on the family farm outside Milton. That small farmhouse, was soon overflowing with laughter and fun. Nadine and Russell raised 5 kids while taking care of lots of animals on the farm. Nadine supported all of her family members in all of their activities. She helped the band boosters. She drove the 5 kids to cub-scouts, boy-scouts, swimming lessons, baseball, basketball, band practice, band or vocal contests, games and 4-H shows. All while still doing all the other farmer’s wife/house wife activities.

Nadine enjoyed her retirement, spent time with her grandchildren, camping and traveling around the country meeting old friends and making new ones, with many of those travels to Branson Mo, Loughlin NV., and anyplace they felt like exploring. During her later years her body slowed down but her zeal for having a good time and being around others who were having a good time didn’t wane. She survived an amputation, COVID at age 92, a severe infection, an erratic memory, the loss of her husband, and daughter. “Flowers from Iowa” is the focus of IMPACT Art Gallery in the Public Library
Susan Partain is an artist who has found her special focus. Her passion lies in perfecting artwork in colored pencil drawings.
Samples of her work with floral and other subjects are currently on display in the Mt. Pleasant Public Library Art Gallery sponsored by Arts IMPACT. Visitors are invited and encouraged to visit during regular library hours 9am to 8pm Monday through Thursday, Friday 9am to 5:30pm, and Saturdays 9am to 2pm
Susan Partain, a Florida native, studied art at Florida College where she was exposed to the wide variety of artistic media. After marriage and a move to Montana, she continued her education at the University of Montana.
Her education included studies with nationally and internationally known television artist Jerry Yarnell.
Under Yarnell’s tutelage, Susan felt “like a thirsty sponge,” coming to an appreciation that every artist brings something different to the art world.
As time moved on and Susan continued perfecting her skills, her children moved to the Burlington area. Then, about ten years ago, Susan and her husband moved to Iowa from Montana to be nearer grandchildren.
Working at the Great River Christian School, Susan has become more and more devoted to the particular intricacies of art with colored pencils. She freely admits, “I’m addicted. Colored pencils are my favorite!”
In retirement, she is getting back into the art world and looks forward to future projects. Many of the subjects for this current exhibit include flowers from her own Iowa garden. Gardening is her other passion. Susan anticipates future projects of photographing Iowa for an All-Iowa Show in the future.
This exhibit will be featured at The Gallery in the Mount Pleasant Public Library through the end of July. It is sponsored by Mount Pleasant Arts IMPACT with support from the Enhance Henry County Foundation.
