High School Girls’ Postseason Basketball
In Class 1A Region 7, Winfield-Mt. Union shocked Keota and pulled off the road upset with a 61-51 final. Madisen Kellogg and Kynlee Buffington each netted 22 points in the winning effort and recorded double-doubles with Kellogg grabbing 10 rebounds and Buffington notching 18 rebounds. The Wolves advanced to the quarterfinals and will play Springville on Tuesday, February 18th, at 7 pm.
Wapello could not shut down Highland’s freshman sensation Kamryn Fink as she pocketed 25 points in a 48-29 win over the Arrows. Wapello finished the season with a 6-16 record.
New London battled with Hillcrest Academy last night but the Tigers were unable to pull off the upset, losing 47-44. New London ended the season with a 1-22 record.
In the bottom half of the bracket, Burlington Notre Dame had WACO on their heels but the Warriors were able to clamp down on the Nike offense to win 45-30. Notre Dame threw everything they had at WACO and even had the lead cut down to two, trailing 25 to 23 midway through the 3rd quarter.
Nevertheless, Ella Huisenga, the lone senior on the squad, made a couple of clutch shots as she finished with 13 points to help rally the offense in the second half. WACO head coach Lisa Graber talked about how much of a calming factor her captain provides the team,
“It’s really, really important. Ella is really interesting. Never played the point guard role until this year. We knew she could dribble, but in the past, we sort of had people that did that, and she stepped up and has taken that on this year and the girls really respect her. She’s a good communicator. She always has good things to say. And yeah, there’s just a lot of a tree that comes with Ellen. She doesn’t make a lot of mistakes and has great composure, and I think she just leads by example really well when maybe she’s not saying things vocally. The girls trust her and need her presence out there.”
Brenna Graber led the Warriors with 16 points, while Daisy Hazell collected 12 points for the Nikes. Notre Dame finished the season with a 5-17 record.
WACO will travel to Sigourney on Tuesday at 7 pm for their quarterfinal matchup.
Holy Trinity Catholic started the night slowly but eventually caught fire as the Crusaders demolished Moulton-Udell 61-24 behind Olivia Bendlage’s 15 points. In Class 2A Region 1, Van Buren County will compete against Pleasantville on Tuesday on the road.
In Region 2, West Burlington will play West Branch tomorrow at home with the winner advancing to tangle with Columbus; Danville will take on Louisa-Muscatine on Tuesday at home.
In Class 3A Region 1, #13 Mediapolis will face off against Washington at home.
In Region 4, Fairfield will travel to Williamsburg and Central Lee will make the trip to Mid-Prairie.
In Class 4A Region 4, Mt. Pleasant will make the trip to Keokuk on Wednesday, February 19th. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm. The winner will travel to Clear Creek Amana on Saturday, February 22nd.
The top half of the bracket will feature Burlington playing host to Fort Madison with the winner to compete against Central DeWitt on Saturday.
High School Basketball
The Central Lee boys’ team handled Davis County last night 56-37.
The Mediapolis boys’ team dropped a tight one to Tipton last night as the Tigers rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat the Bulldogs 61-60.
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will host Fairfield tonight at 7:30 pm.

On Monday: The other first round matchups include Winfield-Mt. Union hosting Pekin in the #4-seed versus #5-seed contest. #2 Holy Trinity Catholic will face off against #7 Columbus. Lastly, #6 Danville will travel to #3 WACO.
In Class 2A Substate 5: District 9, the #1-seed #10 West Burlington will await the winner between #4 Central Lee and #5 Louisa-Muscatine, while #2 Mid-Prairie received a bye as well with the Golden Hawks taking on the winner between #3 Mediapolis and #6 Cardinal.
In District 10, Van Buren County will hit the road to compete against PCM for their first-round matchup.
High School Wrestling
The boys’ district meet is scheduled for tomorrow, February 15th, with Van Buren County, WACO, and Wapello traveling to Pleasantville and New London will head to Wilton in Class 1A. For Class 2A, Burlington Notre Dame, Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union, and Fairfield will compete in Centerville and Mt. Pleasant and Mediapolis will venture to Williamsburg.
High School Bowling
The girls’ state qualifying meets are scheduled for Monday, February 17th, and Fairfield and West Burlington will compete at Davis County, while Mt. Pleasant will travel to Keokuk.
The boys’ state qualifying meets will take place on Tuesday, February 18th, and Mt. Pleasant will make the trip to Keokuk to compete.
Southeastern Community College
The men’s basketball team snapped their four-game losing streak last night in an overtime thriller, defeating Illinois Central College 84-78. The Blackhawks will stay at home to take on Indian Hills Community College tomorrow, February 15th, at 7 pm.
College Basketball
The #10 Iowa State men’s team will compete against Cincinnati at home tomorrow, February 15th, at 3 pm.
The Iowa men’s team will take on #25 Maryland on Sunday, February 16th, at 4 pm on the road.
The Iowa women’s team won a slugfest last night against Rutgers 55-43. Lucy Olsen scored over half the team’s points with 27 on 4 of 5 shooting from downtown. The Hawkeyes will travel to #9 Ohio State on Monday, February 17th, at 11 am.
The Iowa State women’s team will face off against Kansas on the road tomorrow at 4 pm.
