High School Boys’ Postseason Basketball

Classes 1A and 2A will have their first round games tonight scheduled for 7 pm. Here are the local matchups:

For Class 1A Substate 4 District 8, Wapello will take on #10 Burlington Notre Dame on the road.

Winfield-Mt. Union will be hosting Pekin in the #4-seed versus #5-seed contest. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm.

#2 Holy Trinity Catholic will face off against #7 Columbus. 

Lastly, #6 Danville will travel to #3 WACO.

For Class 2A Substate 5: District 9, the #1-seed #10 West Burlington earned a bye and will await the winner between #4 Central Lee and #5 Louisa-Muscatine, while #2 Mid-Prairie received a bye as well with the Golden Hawks taking on the winner between #3 Mediapolis and #6 Cardinal.

In District 10, Van Buren County will hit the road to compete against PCM for their first-round matchup. 

High School Girls’ Postseason Basketball

In Class 2A Region 2, West Burlington earned a rematch against the team that knocked them out of last year’s regional bracket after narrowly defeating West Branch 45-41 over the weekend. The Falcons will travel to Columbus tomorrow, February 18th, at 7 pm with a three-game winning streak on the line.

Danville will square off against Louisa-Muscatine at home tomorrow at 7 pm.

The Class 3A Regional tipped-off over the weekend and in Region 1 Mediapolis slammed the door on Washington’s season with a 58-38 victory over the Demons. Ellah Wagenbach collected 20 points in the win. Mediapolis will face off against Benton at home on Wednesday, February 19th, at 7 pm.

In Region 4, Fairfield lost to Williamsburg 55-15 and Central Lee was squashed by Mid-Prairie 77-41. Taylor Jones led the Hawks with 10 points. The Trojans ended the season with a 1-21 record, while Central Lee finished the season with an 11-12 record.

In Class 1A Region 7, Winfield-Mt. Union will play Springville tomorrow at 7 pm.

WACO will travel to Sigourney tomorrow at 7 pm for their quarterfinal matchup.

In Class 2A Region 1, Van Buren County will compete against Pleasantville tomorrow on the road at 7 pm. 

In Class 4A Region 4, Mt. Pleasant will make the trip to Keokuk on Wednesday. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm. The winner will travel to Clear Creek Amana on Saturday, February 22nd.

The top half of the bracket will feature Burlington playing host to Fort Madison with the winner to compete against Central DeWitt on Saturday. 

High School Wrestling

The boys’ district meets commenced over the weekend and 32 local wrestlers were able to punch their ticket to the state tournament. Here’s some of the highlights from the day of action.

In Class 1A at Pleasantville, WACO’s trio of Ian Maize, Gage Samo, and Louden Huisenga each finished the meet undefeated and as district champions. Van Buren County’s Leo Jirak and Wapello’s Cohen Wolford each finished as runner-ups in their respective weight classes.

At Wilton, New London had Kane Forseen and Gage Burden each collect 2nd place and a ticket to the state tournament.

In Class 2A at Centerville, Burlington Notre Dame handled business with 11 state qualifiers, including five district champions in Kohen Dietzenbach, Colt Boyles, CJ Davis, Kaiden Dietzenbach, and Kael Cook. Fairfield will be sending six wrestlers to Des Moines after Cael McCabe, Cason Miller, Dain Burkhart, and Dre Smithburg took 1st place with Zandrik Allison and Alex Hudson claiming a runner-up slot. 

At Williamsburg, Mediapolis’ Kyler Crow took home 1st place as Peyton and Mason Johnson each finished in 2nd place for their respective weight classes. For a full breakdown of all the action follow this link: District Results

The state tournament is scheduled to start on Wednesday, February 19th, with KILJ 105.5 FM and kilj.com providing updates throughout the day.

High School Basketball

Mt. Pleasant will host Pella tomorrow, February 18th, at 7 pm for their regular season finale.

The Fairfield boys’ team will take on Clear Creek Amana tomorrow with tip-off at 7:30 pm at home.

High School Bowling

The girls’ state qualifying meets are scheduled for today and Fairfield and West Burlington will compete at Davis County, while Mt. Pleasant will travel to Keokuk. 

The boys’ state qualifying meets will take place tomorrow, February 18th, and Mt. Pleasant will make the trip to Keokuk to compete. 

Southeastern Community College                                                     

The men’s basketball team lost a tough one to Indian Hills Community College over the weekend 57-55. The Blackhawks will travel to take on Richard J. Daley College on Thursday, February 20th, at 7 pm.

College Basketball

The #10 Iowa State men’s team is getting back to their winning ways after picking up an 81-70 win over Cincinnati this past weekend. Curtis Jones put up 22 points from off the bench as the Cyclones finished 26-30 from the free throw line. Iowa State will play at home tomorrow, February 18th, at 7 pm against Colorado.

The Iowa men’s team could not keep pace with #25 Maryland yesterday, falling 101-75. Pryce Sandfort led the scoring effort with 15 points, while Payton Sandfort finished with a 14 point/10 rebound double-double. The Hawkeyes will take on Oregon on Wednesday, February 19th, at 7:30 pm at home.

The Iowa women’s team will travel to #9 Ohio State today at 11 am.

The Iowa State women’s team held off Kansas over the weekend, winning 93-80. Audi Crooks dropped 26 points in the winning effort. The Cyclones will face off against Houston on Wednesday at 6:30 pm at home.
