High School Basketball
Columbus split their meeting with Pekin last night as the girls’ team picked up their fifth consecutive win, 55-39, and the boys’ team fell 63-35. WACO will compete tonight with the girls’ tipping off the night at 6 pm at home against Columbus.
Mt. Pleasant will square off against Keokuk tonight at home with the girls’ playing at 6 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:45 pm.
Fairfield will take on Burlington at home tonight with game one at 6 pm.
Burlington Notre Dame will travel to Danville tonight with the boys’ leading off the night at 6 pm.
Mediapolis will host Central Lee tonight with the girls’ teams playing at 6 pm.
West Burlington will square off against Van Buren County tonight in a road matchup with the boys following the girls’ game at 7:30 pm.
New London will take on Holy Trinity Catholic at home tonight with game one at 6 pm.
Winfield-Mt. Union is in the middle of a three-game homestand with a game against Wapello slated to start at 6 pm tonight.
High School Wrestling
The Burlington Notre Dame boys’ team hosted an invitational last night and dominated their three duals, dismantling Cardinal 75-6, shutting out New London 82-0, and crushing Regina Catholic 60-11. Kaiden Dietzenbach and Tate Sherwood each had three matches and finished the night undefeated, including a major decision win for Dietzenbach over New London’s Gage Burden in a top 10 matchup for the 138-pound weight class.
New London fell to Regina Catholic 54-17 and lost on a tie breaker to Cardinal–the Comets had three forfeit wins versus New London’s one–in their two remaining duals. Gavin Menke-Bailey, Corbin Jacobs-Jewell, and Burden each scored two wins by the night’s end.
The Burlington Notre Dame boys’ team will participate in a Tri-Meet tomorrow, January 4th, at Davenport Assumption.
The New London boys’ team will travel to Durant on January 9th to compete in a meet.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union and Mediapolis boys’ teams will participate in the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont tournament tomorrow.
The Van Buren County boys’ team will compete at the Ottumwa Invitational on January 11th.
The WACO girls’ and boys’ teams will compete in a dual tournament tomorrow at BGM.
Fairfield will host a quad on January 7th with Wapello making the trip.
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will travel to Highland for the Gary Curtis Invitational on January 11th.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will compete in the Megan Black Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Invitational tonight.
The Mt. Pleasant, Fairfield, Van Buren County, and Mediapolis girls’ teams will participate in the Keokuk Invite tomorrow.

The #20 men’s basketball team will take on Western Iowa Tech at home on January 8th with tip-off scheduled for 7 pm.
College Basketball
The #3 Iowa State men’s team will face off against #25 Baylor in a home matchup tomorrow, January 4th.
The Iowa men’s team will compete against Wisconsin tonight at 6 pm on the road.
The #23 Iowa women’s team will face off against Maryland on Sunday, January 5th, at home with game time at 5 pm.
The Iowa State women’s team will stay at home to take on Utah on Sunday at 6:30 pm.

1981 – Golfer Johnny Miller wins the sport’s first $1 million tournament when he beats Seve Ballesteros in a playoff in the inaugural Million Dollar World Challenge at Sun City, South Africa.
1983 – Dallas running back Tony Dorsett sets an NFL record with a 99-yard touchdown run in a Cowboys’ 31-27 defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings. There were only 10 Cowboys on the field.
1993 – “The Comeback”, quarterback Frank Reich leads the Buffalo Bills back from a 32-point deficit to defeat the Houston Oilers 41-38 in overtime in a wild card playoff game; the second largest comeback in NFL history.
