High School Baseball

Central Lee’s 12-run 6th inning spoiled Van Buren County’s senior night last night, as the Hawks flew away with a 14-2 victory. Mason Sanders clobbered a home run to the tune of three RBIs. The Hawks finished the regular season with a 16-4 record. 

Avenging last year’s loss, Burlington will at least earn a share of the Southeast Conference title after beating Fairfield last night, 12-2. Voss Richardson and Archer Kreuter each tabbed an RBI, as Richardson slapped a double in the losing effort. The Trojans will host Saydel on Monday, July 6th, at 7 pm.

Mt. Pleasant’s late-game offense led the charge against Fort Madison last night in a 4-1 victory. Grayson Walker and Ryan Helling each grabbed an RBI, while Kaden Schadt turned in a quality start, tossing six strikeouts in 5.1 innings, while allowing only one run. The Panthers will face off against Davenport Central on Monday at 7 pm at home.

Washington will celebrate senior night tonight against Keokuk at 5:30 pm.

Postseason High School Baseball

Looking at Class 1A Substate 6, New London will make the trip to Van Buren County at 7 pm tonight for postseason play. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm. 

Wapello will get a rematch against Highland tonight at 5 pm from Winegard Field in Burlington. 

Burlington Notre Dame will host Danville tonight at 7 pm. 

In Class 2A Substate 4, Mediapolis earned a bye and will await the winner between Monticello and Mid-Prairie.

Winfield-Mt. Union will compete at Mid-Prairie against Louisa-Muscatine at 5 pm to start postseason play tonight. 

Lastly, in Class 2A Substate 5, West Burlington will start their postseason journey at Davis County tonight at 5 pm against Albia.

High School Softball

Mt. Pleasant struggled to get the offense going against Fort Madison last night, falling 6-1. The Panthers will stay on the road for a matchup against Davis County on Monday, July 6th, at 7 pm.

In a battle for the conference crown, Fairfield was shutout by #13 Burlington last night, 3-0. The Trojans and Central Lee will participate in the Ottumwa Classic today.

#15 Holy Trinity Catholic handled West Burlington-Notre Dame last night, 11-1, to earn a share of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference-South title. Sydney Jarvis collected the win in the circle and tabbed three RBIs at the plate for the Crusaders. Holy Trinity Catholic finished the regular season with a program-record 22 wins.

West Burlington/Notre Dame will fly to Hillcrest Academy today. 

Washington will celebrate senior night tonight against Keokuk at 7 pm.

Mediapolis will take on Davis County on Tuesday, July 7th, in a road doubleheader with game one at 5:30 pm.

Postseason High School Softball

In Class 1A Region 8, WACO will travel to Pekin on Monday, July 6th, with first pitch at 7 pm. The winner will play Holy Trinity Catholic in West Point on Wednesday, July 8th.

In Class 2A Region 3, New London will host Danville on Monday at 7 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm. 

Wapello will face off against Columbus on Monday at 7 pm at home.

On Wednesday, West Burlington-Notre Dame will head to Lisbon and Van Buren County will stay at home to compete against West Branch with both games at 7 pm.

Mt. Pleasant Cross Country

Summer runs are underway for the Mt. Pleasant Cross Country team. These runs are optional but a great way to run with others and get in shape for the fall season. The runs are available to anyone entering 7th through 12th grades. Coaches may not be present at every run, as they are often led by upperclassmen.

On Mondays, the runs will take place at 6:30 am at the Old Threshers Museum Theatre. Wednesdays will be high school speed day at 7 am at Mapleleaf and Tuesdays and Thursdays will take place at Saunders Park by the swimming pool at 7 pm. 

The runs will continue through the middle of August until the Mt. Pleasant Cross County camp. If you have any questions, you can contact Coach Lyle Murray at 319-850-0867.  

Local Athletic Camps

Mt. Pleasant will be hosting their volleyball camps starting in late July at the high school gym. The youth camp for grades 3rd through 6th will run from July 20th through the 22nd from 5:30 to 7 pm. The camp cutoff date is July 15th.

The middle school camp for grades 7th and 8th and the high school camp for 9th through 12th graders will run August 3rd through the 5th with the middle school going from 4 to 5:30 pm and the high school to follow from 6 to 8 pm. The cutoff date is July 23rd.

High School Track and Field

The Iowa Association of Track Coaches released their winners for 2026 Track and Field Coach of the Year Awards and Washington’s Steve Roth took home the award for coaching Josh Anderson in the Boys’ Wheelchair Division. Anderson took home a trio of bronze medals and claimed 2nd place in the 800-meter. 

Additionally, in Class 1A, Van Buren County’s Mike Bainbridge and New London’s Austin Burns received At-Large bids for Coach of the Year. The Warriors were led by Lincoln Bainbridge, who earned gold in all four events he participated in, as the team also broke the state meet record in the distance medley relay, which was their program’s first championship in a relay. Van Buren County finished as the runner-up in Class 1A with 43 points.

New London’s 38 points were enough to slot the Tigers in at 4th place. London Franklin also dazzled in Des Moines with three state championships and a silver medal in the 100-meter dash.

Prospect League

The Burlington Bees rallied for four runs in the final two innings, including a literal walk-off, as Lucas Krebs worked a bases loaded walk to down the Clinton LumberKings last night, 6-5. Troy Peltz helped the effort with a two-run homer in the 8th inning to tie the game. The Bees will attempt the home sweep tonight at 6:30 pm.
