High School Baseball
Mt. Pleasant held on to sweep Keokuk for the season last night, 7-6. Jaymisen Rich tabbed three RBIs in the winning effort. The Panthers will stay at home to play Burlington on Monday, June 29th, with game one of the doubleheader slated to start at 5:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:15 pm.
Burlington Notre Dame had their game against Winfield-Mt. Union canceled last night. The Nikes will host Van Buren County tonight at 7 pm.
Winfield-Mt. Union will compete against Mt. Vernon today at 2 pm.
Mediapolis dropped both of their games at Mount Mercy University yesterday, losing 4-3 to Regina Catholic and 5-1 against Clinton. The Bulldogs will look to knock off Sigourney on Tuesday, June 30th, at 7:30 pm at home.
Fairfield will square off against Keokuk on the road on Monday at 5:30 pm.
Wapello will play Danville at home on Monday at 5 pm.
Washington will take on Fort Madison on Monday at home with game one of the doubleheader at 5:30 pm.
New London will head to Lone Tree on Monday at 5 pm.
Central Lee will face off against Danville on Tuesday at 6 pm.
High School Softball
Mt. Pleasant fell to Davenport North, 14-4, and Iowa City West, 14-13, at the Rick Doran Classic yesterday. The Panthers will host Burlington on Monday, June 29th, for a doubleheader with game one at 5:30 pm.
Fairfield competed at the Clear Creek Amana tournament yesterday and split their matchups, beating Regina Catholic 3-1 and losing to the hosts 10-0. Leah Helmick notched four strikeouts in the complete game win. The Trojans will head back today for another pair of contests.
Holy Trinity Catholic had their game against West Burlington/Notre Dame postponed last night. The Crusaders will face off against Central Lee at home at 7 pm on Monday.
Mediapolis handled Wapello last night, 13-3. Avery Crear smacked two home runs for five RBIs in the victory. The Bullettes will stay at home for a contest against Highland at 7 pm on Wednesday, July 1st.
WACO was steamrolled by Pekin last night, 21-4. The Warriors will make the trip to Wapello on Monday for a doubleheader with game one at 5 pm.
Washington will host their invitational today with West Burlington/Notre Dame making the trip.
Columbus will take on Montezuma today.
New London will travel to Lone Tree on Monday at 5 pm.
Van Buren County will tangle with Danville on Monday at 5 pm at home.
Mt. Pleasant Cross Country
Summer runs are underway for the Mt. Pleasant Cross Country team. These runs are optional but a great way to run with others and get in shape for the fall season. The runs are available to anyone entering 7th through 12th grades. Coaches may not be present at every run, as they are often led by upperclassmen.
On Mondays, the runs will take place at 6:30 am at the Old Threshers Museum Theatre. Wednesdays will be high school speed day at 7 am at Mapleleaf and Tuesdays and Thursdays will take place at Saunders Park by the swimming pool at 7 pm.
The runs will continue through the middle of August until the Mt. Pleasant Cross County camp. If you have any questions, you can contact Coach Lyle Murray at 319-850-0867.
Southeastern Community College
The men’s basketball team has a new face of the program after announcing Steve Henson as the next head coach of the team starting on Wednesday, July 1st. Henson has a rich resume, winning Conference USA Coach of the Year after guiding the University of Texas at San Antonio to a 20-win season and a postseason appearance in 2018. Most recently Henson was serving as an assistant coach at Baylor University.
As head coach, Henson will oversee all aspects of the Blackhawks men’s basketball program, including recruiting, player development, practice planning, and game strategy. His experience at the NCAA Division I and professional levels brings a wealth of knowledge to SCC and provides student-athletes the opportunity to learn from a coach who has competed and coached at the highest levels of the game.
Prospect League
The Burlington Bees had their matchup against the Normal CornBelters postponed last night due to weather. The game will be made up on July 9th as part of a doubleheader. The Bees will stay at home for a contest against the Danville Dans at 6:30 pm tonight.
The Clinton LumberKings had their showdown with the Cape Catfish canceled last night. The LumberKings will travel to the Alton River Dragons tonight at 6:35 pm.

1894 – Annie Londonderry [Annie Kopchovsky] sets out from Boston to become the first woman to bicycle around the world; she completes the journey in September of 1895.
