High School Track and Field

Mt. Pleasant will host the state qualifying meet tomorrow, May 9th, with Washington, Keokuk, Fort Madison, and Fairfield making the trip.

Danville, New London, WACO, Columbus, and Winfield-Mt. Union will travel to Sigourney for their state qualifying meet, while Mediapolis, West Burlington, Van Buren County, and Central Lee will head west to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont for their meet tomorrow.

High School Soccer

The Mediapolis girls’ team will face off against Keokuk tomorrow, May 9th, at 4:30 pm.

The boys’ Southeast Iowa Super Conference tournament held their quarterfinal round yesterday with Danville and Hillcrest Academy hosting two games apiece. 

Mediapolis blanked Central Lee last night 3-0 despite Hunter Gregory saving nine shots on goal for the Hawks. Danville’s offense was unstoppable last night against Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union, winning 8-2. Kadu Garcia netted a hat trick for the Bears as Colin Pealer tabbed four assists and two goals in the winning effort. 

At Hillcrest Academy, Burlington Notre Dame snuck past WACO with a 2-1 victory with Luke Carper and Connor Bush each notching a goal for the Nikes. Lastly, Micah Gerber’s lone goal for the Ravens downed Highland last night 1-0. 

Hillcrest Academy will face off against Burlington Notre Dame and Danville will take on Mediapolis in the conference semifinals on Friday, May 10th, at WACO.

The WACO boys’ team will host Central Lee on May 13th at 5 pm for the first round of the Class 1A District 6 postseason bracket, while Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union will face off against Danville on the road at 5 pm.

Mt. Pleasant will take on Burlington Notre Dame tomorrow with the boys’ team on the road and the girls’ team at home. 

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team squashed Wapello last night 10-0. Hadley Augustine led the Nikes with four goals on the night followed by Julianna Hill with two. Penelope Sowell tallied seven assists. 

High School Tennis

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will travel to Central DeWitt for team regionals on Friday, May 10th.

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will be playing in their district matches today at Fairfield.

High School Golf

The New London boys’ team will host Danville, Holy Trinity Catholic, Winfield-Mt. Union, and WACO for their sectional today.

The boys’ teams of Central Lee, Van Buren County, and Mediapolis traveled to Mid-Prairie for sectionals yesterday and here’s the results. West Liberty and West Branch punched their ticket to districts with team scores of 328 and 336, respectively.  

As a team, the Bulldogs finished in fifth with a team score of 353 with Ben Wolter carding an 83. Central Lee shot a 364 as a squad with Caleb Larson finishing with the fifth best score of 85 on the 18-hole course. Lastly, Van Buren County finished with a team score of 368. The district meet will be held on Monday, May 13th, at Pleasant Valley Golf Course with Regina Catholic acting as the host. 

The girls first round of regionals will take place on Friday, May 10th, with Columbus, Danville, Holy Trinity Catholic, WACO, and Winfield-Mt. Union traveling to New London at Deerwood Golf Course. Van Buren County, West Burlington/Notre Dame, Central Lee, and Mediapolis will make the trip to Kalona Golf Course hosted by Mid-Prairie. 

The SEC boys’ teams will meet up today at Mt. Pleasant for sectionals with Albia, West Burlington/Notre Dame, and Mt. Vernon also competing.

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will compete in their SEC meet today.

Southeast Iowa Playbook

Tune in to 105.5 FM, kilj.com, tonight at 6 pm for a new episode of the Southeast Iowa Playbook with Danville being our school of focus. Our special guests will be seniors Kamryn Sherwood and Carter Fesler of the girls and boys track and field teams. 

College Signings

Mediapolis will be holding their spring signing day today at 12:30 pm at the high school gym. Jacob Grier and Ben Wolter will be continuing their golfing careers at SCC. Olivia Hines will golf at the University of Dubuque. Aedin Nelson will play football at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Jackson Hutcheson will take his talents to Loras College. Lastly, Solomon Zaugg will run at Wartburg College.

Southeastern Community College

SCC baseball will face off against the winner of Iowa Central versus NIACC on Friday, May 10th.

This Day in Sports History

1936 – Jockey Ralph Neves is unexpectedly revived after being declared dead after a fall. His wife fainted when he returned to the track.

1973 – Ernie Banks technically became the first African American MLB manager when Cubs’ manager Whitey Lockman was ejected from the game. Banks filled in as the manager and won the game 3-2 in 12 innings.

2020 – 11-year old Brazilian skateboarder Gui Khury creates a world record by performing the first 1080 degree turn on a vertical ramp.
