Boys’ Golf: Panthers Advance With Close Shave Runner-Up: 

The Mount Pleasant boys’ golf team survived and advanced in a close shave finish at yesterday’s sectional golf meet, advancing them to next week’s district meet to be held at Flint Hills Golf Course.

The Panthers finished with 353 strokes, just three better than that of third place Washington to clinch their ticket to next week’s final bout before state.

Washington ended their 18-hole round with 356 strokes, falling just three strokes shy of a tie with the Panthers.

On a windy afternoon, Reece Kempker led the way an 82.

Brevin Wilson added an 84, while Nick Matheny carded an 85.

Sectionals will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 20th.

The event will be hosted by Burlington-Notre Dame.

Girls Golf: Mount Pleasant Finish Second in SEC Preview:

The Mount Pleasant girls’ golf finished second yesterday in a preview of the Southeast Conference meet at Washington High School.

Sami Wibben carded a 46, while Elli Liechty and Ryann Davidson shot 47’s to lead Mount Pleasant.

Ryann Walderbach added a 53.

Washington, the top-ranked team in the state, ended their night with a 161, while Mount Pleasant finished with 193 strokes.

Fairfield finished third followed by Keokuk and Burlington.

The Panthers will be back at Washington Monday for the Southeast Conference meet.

College Baseball: Salas Honored by SLIAC:

Iowa Wesleyan infielder Nick Salas has been named first team All-Conference the SLIAC announced Friday.

Salas was the only Tiger to earn All-Conference honors.

The senior from Pipe Creek, Texas put together an impressive season at the plate this year, hitting .277 over 94 at-bats in 27 games.

The Tiger slugger tallied 26 hits, three doubles, eight home runs, and 20 runs batted in over the course of the regular season this spring.

Salas is currently ranked second on Iowa Wesleyan’s all-time career records list for home runs, totaling 20 over his four years here in Mount Pleasant.

Sophomore pitcher Joe Morrison was named to the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship Team this season.

Morrison was on the mound for the Tigers for 36 innings this spring, striking out 29 hitters.

Wesleyan was eliminated from conference tournament play Friday with an 8-1 loss to Fontbonne.

College Basketball: Big Ten Sets Iowa’s Basketball Opponents:

Big Ten officials have officially released the Big Ten basketball conference schedule.

Iowa will have home-and-home dates with Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State and Purdue.

Home-and-home means both Iowa and the opponent will each get one home against each other this winter.

The Hawkeyes will play home games only against Indiana, Michigan State and Northwestern.

Their road only dates with conference foes include at Ohio State, at Rutgers and at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin against the Badgers.
