High School Postseason Baseball

In Class 1A Substate 5: District 9, Burlington Notre Dame and Moravia participated in a pitchers duel over the weekend with the Nikes sneaking past the Mohawks 4-3 after 8 innings of play. Moravia had the only source of offense for the first 5 innings with Matthew Seals clobbering a baseball over the left-center field fence for a solo home run. 

The Nikes would tie the game after Landry Haberichter led off the 6th inning with a triple. Caden Schwenker would hit a sacrifice fly for the lone RBI of the contest for the Nikes. After a scoreless 7th inning, the Mohawks managed two runs in the 8th inning to take a 3 to 1 lead. The Nikes were down to their last out in the bottom of the 8th inning with the bases empty, then magic happened. 

Spencer Brent reached on an error, then a single by Schwenker and a couple more errors led to Brent scoring and bringing the game within one, 3 to 2. Another error, a single, and a walk had the game locked at 3. Two passed balls led to Logan Brent crossing home plate for the walk off. The Nikes will face off against Hillcrest Academy in the Substate Championship tomorrow, July 11th, KILJ will be on the call with pregame at 6:45 pm.

In Class 2A Substate 5: District 10, Van Buren County took down Mediapolis 10-0 to claim the district championship. Lucas Fett smacked a grand slam for the Warriors. Van Buren County will square off against Mid-Prairie tomorrow at 7 pm.

In Class 3A Substate 5, Mt. Pleasant walked it off against Fairfield with a final score of 4-3 after a bases loaded single by Zerek Venghaus. The Panthers will take on Marion tonight at 7 pm. KILJ will be on the call with pregame at 6:45 pm, first pitch at 7 pm.

High School Postseason Softball

In Class 1A Region 8, Sigourney defeated Wapello over the weekend 2-0 to move on to the Regional Championship against Twin Cedars tonight at 7 pm.

In Class 3A Region 8, Washington fell to Assumption 7-0 in the semifinal round. The Demons finished the season with a 24-13 record. 

It took extra innings but West Burlington took down West Liberty 5-2 to advance in the playoffs. Lauren Summers picked up the complete game win, fanning 8 batters. The Falcons will compete against the Knights tomorrow, July 11th, for the Regional Championship at 7 pm.

In Class 4A Region 6, Norwalk defeated Keokuk 10-0. The Chiefs finished with a 5-24 record on the season. 

Burlington squeaked by Knoxville 3-2 with Saydee Plummer leading the Grayhounds with 2 RBIs and picking up the win as she struck out 10 batters. Burlington will take on Norwalk tomorrow at 7 pm for the Regional Championship.

Mt. Pleasant Cross Country

On Mondays and Wednesdays, runs will begin at the Old Threshers Museum Theatre at 6:30 am.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, runs will start at 7 pm at Saunders Park by the swimming pool.

Prospect League

The Burlington Bees took down the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp over the weekend 6-3. Mason Schwalbach knocked a triple and tallied 2 RBIs in the winning effort. Corey Boyette clobbered a solo home run. The Bees will face off against the Normal CornBelters tonight. 

The Clinton LumberKings split their Saturday night doubleheader against the Normal CornBelters, losing 9-7 and winning 13-4. Dylan DeButy smacked a home run in the losing effort and Casen Neumann hammered a three-run home run in the winning effort.

The LumberKings took down the Pistol Shrimp yesterday 5-4. Alex Diaz collected 2 RBIs in the winning effort. Clinton will take on the CornBelters tomorrow, July 11th, on the road.
