Measles Outbreak Confirmed in Southern Iowa

Iowa health authorities are responding to a measles outbreak in southern Iowa that includes potential exposure locations in Bloomfield.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services had confirmed 12 cases as of Sunday, August 16, with evidence of person-to-person transmission.

Potential public exposure occurred at Wells Hometown Drug, located at 208 East Franklin Street in Bloomfield, on Thursday, July 30, between 4:30 and 7 p.m.

Another potential exposure occurred at JR Feed and Supply, located at 17599 200th Street in Bloomfield, on Sunday, August 9, between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Anyone who visited either location during those periods should monitor for symptoms, including fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes and a rash.

Measles spreads through the air and can infect anyone who is exposed and not immune. People who have not been vaccinated or are uncertain about their immunity should contact a healthcare provider or local public-health department about receiving the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.

Anyone who develops symptoms after a possible exposure should call a healthcare provider or emergency room before arriving so precautions can be taken to protect other patients.
