WACO Expands Restrictions on Student Electronic Devices

WACO students will face expanded restrictions on cellphones and other personal electronic devices when the new school year begins Monday, August 24.

Under the updated policy, students may not use personal electronic devices at any point during the school day. The restriction applies during classes, passing periods, lunch, study halls and assemblies.

Cellphones, wireless earbuds, gaming devices, personal tablets and similar electronics must remain at home, inside a vehicle, in a locker or secured inside a backpack. Students may not carry the devices during the school day.

Smartwatches may be worn, but messaging and notification functions must be turned off.

District-issued technology may still be used for educational purposes. Devices specifically authorized through an Individualized Education Program, Section 504 Plan or Individual Health Plan are also exempt.

The previous WACO policy restricted cellphone and headphone use inside classrooms but allowed students to use the devices in hallways and during lunch.

Families needing to contact a student during the school day are asked to call the appropriate school office. The district says the updated policy is intended to reduce distractions and promote a safer, more focused learning environment.
