Rep. Jeff Shipley Named Chair of Iowa House International Relations Committee

Iowa House Speaker Pat Grassley (R-New Hartford) has announced that Representative Jeff Shipley (R-Birmingham) will serve as Chair of the Iowa House International Relations Committee for the upcoming 2026 Legislative Session. 

“I am honored for this opportunity provided by Speaker Pat Grassley to serve as Chair of the International Relations Committee,” said Shipley. “I am excited for the chance to present the great state of Iowa to the world. I look forward to continuing the work to build the Iowa House’s relationships with other countries.” 

Shipley is currently serving his fourth term in the Iowa House. The 2026 Legislative Session is scheduled to convene on January 12, 2026. 

 

Fairfield Chamber Hosting Candidate Forum October 15

The Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Candidate Forum on Wednesday, October 15, at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, sponsored by Freeman Kevenides Law Firm. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with the program starting at 5:00 p.m. 

The schedule includes a social hour (5:00–5:30 p.m.), followed by the mayoral forum with Connie Boyer and Doug Flournoy (5:45–6:45 p.m.), a Fairfield Schools bond session with Superintendent Zach Wigle (6:45–7:15 p.m.), and the Ward 2 council forum with Paul Gandy and Matthew W. Johnson (7:15–8:15 p.m.). 

Mendy McAdams, Chamber Executive Director, will moderate. The event is free and open to the public, with civility expected throughout.

Calling All Southeast Iowa Youth Hunters

Next Saturday, young hunters have a chance to experience the thrill of the hunt at the Youth Pheasant Hunt, hosted in partnership with the Aldo Leopold Pheasants Forever Chapter.

New London City Council Meets Monday to Review Ordinances and Property Sales

The New London City Council will hold its regular meeting on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the City Office, 112 West Main Street, with Mayor Kirk Miller presiding. 

The meeting will include a public hearing on Ordinance #86, which updates stop and yield requirements, and Resolution #475, regarding the potential sale of city property in the South Pine Street Urban Renewal Area to H & A Contracting, LLC. 

Other business includes amendments to agreements with Q3 Contracting and Joshua and Kelsey Bradley, discussion of repairs at 507 South Walnut Street, and consideration of playground equipment funding from Oktoberfest. New business items feature street closures, fire department job descriptions, approval for residents to keep chickens, and the Annual Urban Renewal and Financial Reports for fiscal year 2024–2025. 

The next regular meeting is Monday, November 10, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. 

Mount Pleasant Mayoral Forum & School Board Forums This Week

The Mount Pleasant School Board Election Candidate Forum will take place on Wednesday, October 15th at 6:00 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Community High School, 2104 South Grand Avenue. Hosted by the Government Relations Committee and KILJ Radio, the event will allow voters to learn more about the candidates seeking to serve on the Mount Pleasant Community School District Board. The public is encouraged to attend and hear candidates discuss their priorities and plans for the district’s future. 

The following evening, on Thursday, October 16th at 5:30 p.m., the focus will shift to city leadership with the City of Mount Pleasant Mayoral Candidate Forum. That event will be held in the Civic Center Meeting Room, located at 307 East Monroe Street, and is hosted by the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance Government Relations Committee.
This forum offers Chamber of Commerce members a chance to hear directly from mayoral candidates about their goals and vision for Mount Pleasant. 

Both events aim to promote civic engagement and provide the community with valuable insight before Election Day November 4th. 

Mt. Pleasant Panther Marching Band Places Third at Muskie Invitational

The Mt. Pleasant High School Panther Marching Band earned a strong third-place finish Saturday night at the Muskie Marching Band Invitational, held at Muscatine High School. 

In the 3A division, top honors went to Mount Vernon, followed by Center Point Urbana in second, and Mt. Pleasant in third. Other 3A finishers included Fort Madison and Washington. 

Davenport Central captured first place in the 4A division. 

The Panther Marching Band will perform next at the Iowa State Marching Band competition this Saturday, continuing their season with a chance to showcase their skills on the state stage. 

Sports, October 13th

High School Volleyball

Wapello participated in the Westside Invite over the weekend and finished 2-4 against some tougher competition with three set victories over Des Moines Roosevelt (14-25, 25-12, 20-18) and West Liberty (25-21, 15-25, 18-16). Mila Jordan collected 30 kills and 10 aces over the course of the tournament. The Arrows will celebrate their senior night tomorrow, October 14th, at 7:30 pm against Louisa-Muscatine. 

#2 Holy Trinity Catholic struggled at the Pella Invite over the weekend, failing to win a set against Knoxville, Washington, Valley, and the Dutch. 

Mediapolis will host a tournament on Thursday, October 16th, at 5 pm with Holy Trinity Catholic participating. 

Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield traveled to Oskaloosa over the weekend and the Trojans finished 3-1, including a narrow three set victory over Mt. Pleasant (15-21, 21-10, 15-13). Faith Jones tabbed 77 assists and nine aces throughout the weekend. The pair will head to Keokuk tonight for the Southeast Conference Tournament finals.  

West Burlington handled business at the Davis County Tournament, going a perfect 5-0, including sweeps of Van Buren County and Central Lee to grab the tournament victory. Kaylee Webb was a force at the net for the Falcons as she nabbed 60 kills through the five matches.

Van Buren County collected two wins, including a sweep of Central Lee, while the Hawks picked up a victory over Centerville in straight sets and a narrow three-set win over Davis County (21-14, 23-25, 17-15). Taylor Jones finished with 18 kills for Central Lee.

West Burlington will host Mediapolis for their senior night tomorrow at 7:30 pm.

WACO will take on Pekin at home tomorrow for their regular season finale. 

Columbus will celebrate their senior night tomorrow against Hillcrest Academy at 7:30 pm. 

Danville will host an Invite on Thursday with Burlington Notre Dame and Mt. Pleasant making the trip. 

High School Cross Country

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference will meet at Hillcrest Academy tomorrow, October 14th.

Mt. Pleasant will host the Southeast Conference meet on Thursday, October 16th.

High School Football

#9 Mt. Pleasant returns home to square off against #3 Solon at 7:30 pm on Friday, October 17th, with the winner claiming the District Championship. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 7:15 pm.

Mediapolis will host Central Lee on Friday at 7 pm.

WACO will take on #4 Iowa Valley on Friday at 7 pm on the road. 

Fairfield will compete against Keokuk at home on Friday at 7:30 pm. 

West Burlington/Notre Dame will tangle with Mid-Prairie at 7 pm on Friday. 

Second place for Class A District 5 will be up for grabs when Danville travels to Wapello on Friday at 7 pm. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will face off against Belle Plaine on Friday at 7 pm. 

Southeastern Community College

The men’s soccer team snuck out with a 1-0 victory over Central Community College over the weekend, while the women’s team was shutout 2-0. The men’s and women’s soccer teams will host Iowa Central Community College on Wednesday, October 15th, with the women playing first. 

The volleyball team went undefeated over the weekend, sweeping Black Hawk College and East Central College. The Blackhawks will take on Iowa Central Community College on Wednesday at 7 pm at home. 

College Football

Iowa State was knocked out of the top 25 after being on the wrong end of an upset for the second consecutive week, losing 24-17 to Colorado. Abu Sama III was the only source of offense, rushing for 177 yards and two scores in the losing effort. The Cyclones will get a chance to regroup with a bye week.

Iowa whacked Wisconsin over the weekend to the tune of a 37-0 shutout to keep the Heartland Trophy in their possession. Kamari Moulton led the ground attack with 96 yards and a score. The Hawkeyes will face off against Penn State on Saturday, October 18th, at 6 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM will be on the call.
