Lee County Granted FEMA Public Assistance Program Funding for Spring Flooding

The weather hasn’t necessarily been kind to certain parts of Iowa this year, as we all saw with a heat wave last week, tornadoes, and drought. Earlier in the year, spring flooding impacted different communities throughout the state and contributed to damage in these towns. Governor Kim Reynolds has now received confirmation from the President of the United States that her request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration for seven counties that were devastated by spring flooding has been granted. Lee county is named in the list, along with Allamakee, Clayton, Des Moines, Dubuque, Jackson, and Scott.

Under the declaration, FEMA Public Assistance Program funding is available to eligible public entities and nonprofit organizations in the designated counties that were impacted by the April 24-May 13, 2023, Mississippi River flooding. This funding may be used for any emergency work, such as the removal of debris and emergency protective measures, or the repair/replacement of disaster-damaged facilities.

The governor also received notification that the Presidential Disaster Declaration includes funding to conduct hazard mitigation activities for the entire state. With this funding, Iowa will be able to minimize the impact of future disasters by taking steps to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from natural hazards.

Ottumwa Man Charged With Murder

On August 4, 2023, the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an assault that took place in Russell, Iowa in the early part of July. The assault resulted in 33-year-old Nicholas Johnson of Florida being taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Johnson remained in the hospital until his passing on August 7.

An investigation by the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) showed that the injuries Johnson sustained were caused by 30-year-old Trenton Orwig of Ottumwa, Iowa. DCI agents and officers with the Ottumwa Police Department arrested Orwig without incident on August 25. Orwig has been charged with one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a class B felony. He is being held without bond in the Lucas County Jail.

High School Football: WACO Picks Up Opening Week Win Over Fremont-Mills

Tabor, IA- Fremont-Mills and WACO were two of the four teams to make it to the UNI Dome last season; however, both teams lost some of their senior leadership from the past year leading to a week one matchup that would answer some of those questions.

The Warriors answered those questions with a big road win over the Knights 26-20 with a balanced attack of Clayton Miller leading the air attack and Louden Huisenga picking up big chunks of yards on the ground.

Miller, a junior, was an efficient 12 of 16 through the air for 160 yards and three total scores (two through the air), while Huisenga, also a junior, averaged 7 yards per carry for a total of 133 yards and a score.

Huisenga and the senior leader for the squad Colton Leichty were the primary targets as they each caught five passes and a touchdown.

Leichty led a Warrior defensive squad that allowed only 46 rushing yards on 25 attempts. Sawyer Forney, sophomore quarterback for the Knights, found some success through the air with 162 yards and two touchdowns.

Nevertheless, Leichty and Miller curtailed some of that success by each picking off one of Forney’s passes.

WACO will hope to make it two-in-a-row against Iowa Valley at home, who is 2-0 after defeating Lone Tree 60-14 last Friday. Fremont-Mills will look to enter the win column against Lenox on the road. Both games scheduled for September 1st at 7 pm.

Sports, August 26th

High School Football

Mt. Pleasant opened up their season against Fairfield on a hot, muggy evening that included a lightning delay, but it was the Trojans who brought the thunder, winning 38-14. Fairfield grounded and pounded for the entire game offensively, but it was the Panther defense early that came up with a couple 4th down stops.

However, it was Carson Miller that scored his first of three touchdowns inside the 10-yard line to give Fairfield the early 7 to 0 lead. Jurha Turner answered back on the next play with a game-tying kickoff return for a touchdown. The Trojans scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and looked poised to take a 21 to 7 lead into halftime before Cooper Coleman found Payton Walker for a 36-yard gain to eventually set up an 11-yard touchdown pass to Turner making the score 21-14.

But, Fairfield’s rushing attack would seal the game in the second half as the Trojans put up 17 unanswered points. Head Coach John Bowlin knows that this young Panther squad did some nice things on the football field.

In other Class 3A District 4 matchups, Washington fell to Oskaloosa 28-14. Keokuk defeated Ottumwa last night 23-8. Fort Madison and Burlington participated in a defensive slugfest with the Bloodhounds coming out on top 15-12, despite Gabe Robinson’s 121 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Mediapolis handled Columbus last night 33-7 to open up the season.

Central Lee dominated their way to a 35-8 victory over Van Buren County to move to 1-0 on the season.

Danville lost to Lynnville-Sully 54-13 last night.

Winfield-Mt. Union took down Central City in a top 5 matchup last night 44-36. The Wolves and Wildcats started off slow, but a 20 point second quarter by the Wolves set them on their way to eventually outscore Central City 16 to 14 in the second half.

New London fell to Easton Valley last night 61-22 after the River Hawks flew to a 24 point shutout in the second quarter.

WACO will square off against Fremont-Mills on the road tonight.
