High School Basketball

The Holy Trinity Catholic girls’ team heads into the break with a 9-1 record, while the Mt. Pleasant girls’ team is 1-9. 

The Holy Trinity Catholic boys’ team is 6-3 heading into winter break.

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team heads into winter break with a 5-3 record and a 4-0 conference record. 

The WACO boys’ team touts a 5-3 record heading into winter break, while the girls’ team is 4-5.

The New London boys’ team is 2-6 heading into the break and the girls are 1-9.

The Danville boys’ team is now 7-3 on the season. The girls’ team will head into winter break with a 5-4 record.  

The Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team is 3-8 heading into winter break. The boys’ team heads into winter break with an 8-1 record. 

The Central Lee girls’ team heads into winter break with a 3-5 record. The Central Lee boys’ team is 2-6 entering winter break.

The Mediapolis girls’ team heads into winter break with an 8-1 record. The boys’ team touts a 5-3 record heading into winter break. 

The Van Buren County boys’ team will face off against Columbus on January 4th at 7:30 pm and the girls’ team will travel to Fairfield on January 2nd at 7:30 pm. 

Boys’ High School Basketball Rankings

The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) released their first edition of their top 10 rankings for all four classifications and here are the top teams.

In Class 4A, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy sits atop the rankings with a 5-0 record. Decorah is the top team in Class 3A with an 8-0 record. West Lyon is 10-0 and the team to look out for in Class 2A. Underwood is also 10-0 in Class 2A, but they are only ranked 7th on the list. Lastly, North Linn and Marquette Catholic are jockeying for the #1 slot in Class 1A as they both tout 9-0 records. 

Winfield-Mt. Union enters the top 10 for Class 1A at the #6 spot. The Wolves are 8-1 on the season and undefeated in Southeast Iowa Super Conference play. Abram Edwards is averaging a double-double on the season with 14.6 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. Cam Buffington is averaging 17 points per game since starting the season late due to injury. Jake Edwards is also averaging double figures with 10.1 points per game. 

High School Wrestling

The WACO boys’ team will compete in a meet at Washington on January 4th.

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union, Mt. Pleasant, and WACO girls’ teams will compete at a tournament after winter break on January 5th at Highland. 

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ teams will have to wait until after winter break with the Panthers competing on January 4th at Sigourney.

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team will compete today at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. 

New London will wait until after winter break to compete in a quad at Cascade on January 4th. 

High School Bowling

Mt. Pleasant will take on Washington on January 4th. 

College Football

Iowa State University will take on Memphis in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis on December 29th at 2:30 pm. The Cyclones defeated Memphis in the 2017 AutoZone Liberty Bowl 21-20. 

#20 Iowa will face off against #25 Tennessee in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on January 1st at noon. 

College Basketball

The #4 Iowa women’s team will face off against Minnesota on December 30th at 1 pm at home. 

The Iowa State women’s team will begin conference play on December 30th at 2 pm against Oklahoma State on the road. 

The Iowa State men’s team will host New Hampshire on December 31st at noon. 

The Iowa men’s team will take on Northern Illinois on December 29th at 6 pm at home.
