Mt. Pleasant Football

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers fell to district foe, the Clinton River Kings, 49-26 last Friday on the road. Zerek Venghaus was a bright spot for Panthers all night as he rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown, while Jacob Richtman threw for 2 touchdown passes, one to Garrett Cook and the other to Carter Amos, and amassed 177 yards passing. The Panthers will travel to North Scott this Friday, October 21st, to play their season finale at 7:30 pm.

High School Football Scores

WACO finished with a perfect record of 9-0 after defeating Tri-County, 42-10 last Friday. The team combined for 209 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns, with Louden Huisenga leading the Warriors with 114 yards and 2 touchdowns. First round of the playoffs starts this week with WACO hosting Martensdale-St. Marys at 7 pm. KILJ will be on the call with pregame to start at 6:45.

New London dominated their way to a 72-14 win over HLV. The team rushed for 345 yards and 7 touchdowns with Boden Pickle rushing for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns. Dom Lopez had 3 total touchdowns. The Tigers will be traveling to play Gladbrook-Reinbeck this Friday for their playoff game.

Winfield-Mt. Union defeated English Valleys 71-8 with playoffs on the line. Cam Buffington bounced back in a big way rushing for 266 yards and 8 touchdowns in the regular season finale. The Wolves have the dubious distinction of playing Don Bosco, who is ranked 3rd in 8-man football, to start their playoff journey this Friday.

High School Volleyball

Regional play starts today and tomorrow for High School Volleyball. Here’s some of the matchups:

Holy Trinity Catholic will be hosting Wayne at 7 pm tonight. KILJ will be on the call with pregame to start at 6:45 pm.

The WACO Warriors will face off against Melcher-Dallas at home at 7 pm tonight.

Winfield-Mt. Union will play Twin Cedars tonight at 7 pm at home.

New London will be going against Hillcrest Academy at 7 pm tonight. Jeff Broeg will broadcast this game on the KILJ-AM

Burlington Notre Dame gets a first-round bye as they chase for their 3rd state championship in a row. Central Lee will play Davis County at 7 pm.

The Mount Pleasant Panthers start their postseason tomorrow, October 18th, when they travel to play Burlington. KILJ will be on the call.

Elementary Basketball Tournament

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The Tiger volleyball team lost to Cottey College in straight sets on Saturday: 25-23, 25-18, and 25-13. Madison Saia led the Tigers in kills with 7 on the match. They also lost to Manhattan Christian College 3 sets to 1. The Tigers will look to bounce back October 18th at home where they will celebrate senior day against Stephens College at 6 pm.

The Tiger football team falls to 1-2 in conference play as Valley City State University shuts them out 32-0. Gavin Esquivel and Zach Chevalier combined for 143 passing yards but two interceptions. Additionally, the Tigers could only muster 34 rushing yards on the game. Gavin DePedro led Iowa Wesleyan in tackles with 11 and Jerimiah Pauling registered a sack. The Tigers will be back in action October 22nd as they travel to play Presentation College at 1 pm.

Men’s and women’s cross-country teams ran at the Indian Hills Invitational to end their regular season. Lily Garnsey was the first woman Tiger to finish with a time of 21:40 that placed her in 17th. Faith Younce was next in 21st, Alison Morris placed 27th, Lidia Pamos finished in 45th, and Teya Hawkins rounded out the day finishing in 48th. The Tiger women finished in 6th out of 11 teams. The Tiger men broke their own team total time record set less than a week ago by 3 minutes running the race in 2:27:04. Logan Lucas was the first Tiger since 1994 to run an 8K in under 27 minutes with a time of 26:56, which gave him 6th place. Daron Jackson was next in 19th, Kenny Tucker finished in 46th, Jabez Rivers in 50th, and Gannon McNamee rounded out the day finishing in 56th place. The Tiger men finished in 7th out of 12 teams. November 4th marks the 2022 Continental Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Florida College.

The women’s soccer team fell to Viterbo University 2-0 yesterday. They are now 7-7 on the season and their next game will be Saturday, October 22nd, at Bellevue University at 5 pm.

The men’s soccer team was only down 2-1 at halftime, but Viterbo scored 3 goals in the second half to run away with a 5-1 win. Thomas Mullen scored the lone goal for the Tigers. They will travel to play Graceland University Saturday, October 22nd, at 3 pm.
