High School Volleyball

#1 Holy Trinity Catholic dropped the first set to West Burlington last night, but cruised the rest of the way, winning in four sets. The Falcons were led by Kaylee Webb’s 13 kills. 

Holy Trinity Catholic and Van Buren County will compete at the Redette Tournament in Centerville tomorrow, September 13th.

Danville fell to Mediapolis last night in four sets (18-25, 16-25, 25-19, 18-25). Ellah Wagenbach and AvaLynn Prall combined for 21 kills in the winning effort.  

Danville will travel to New London on Tuesday, September 16th. 

Burlington Notre Dame edged out Van Buren County in comeback fashion last night in five sets (16-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16, 16-14). The Nikes will host Central Lee on Tuesday. 

New London was swept by Central Lee last night (5-25, 15-25, 9-25). Brylee Cook was surgical from the service line with nine aces for the Hawks. 

Columbus swept Pekin last night 25-17, 25-19, and 25-18 thanks to the serving prowess of the Wildcats, totaling 14 aces in the victory. Jocelyn Hernandez led the team with five aces. 

Mt. Pleasant will compete in the Wilton Tournament tomorrow with Mediapolis and Winfield-Mt. Union also making the trip. 

Fairfield will travel to Williamsburg to compete in a tournament tomorrow along with West Burlington and Columbus.

High School Cross Country

Fairfield hosted their invite last night with six of our local teams competing and Van Buren County’s boys’ and girls’ teams collected the team wins in the Class 1A and Class 2A division.

Starting in boys’ Classes 1A and 2A division, Lincoln Bainbridge paced not only the division but the entire field as he posted the best time of the night at 17 minutes and 1 second. Helping the Warriors was Gavin Noll’s third place finish. 

West Burlington/Notre Dame put together a nice meet with Liam Haeger (19:48) and Gabe Andrus (20:03) each taking a spot in the top 10 at 8th and 9th place, respectively. 

Wapello’s Will Parsons turned in a time of 21 minutes and 1 second, which was good enough for 17th place. Bowen Thomson led Winfield-Mt. Union with a 20th place time of 21 minutes and 23 seconds. Lastly, the trio of Zayden Lawerence, Nathan Bergman, and Zane Long took 22nd through 24th place, respectively, for New London.

Moving to the boys’ Classes 3A and 4A race, Silas Hulett of Mt. Pleasant collected the 6th fastest time of the meet, finishing just outside the podium with a 4th place time of 17 minutes and 51 seconds. Fairfield’s John Miller finished in 22nd place to anchor the Trojans. 

Van Buren County scored only 16 points in the girls’ Classes 1A and 2A division with four of their runners finishing in tandem: Rylee Philips led the charge with a 5th place time of 22 minutes and 30 seconds followed by Kayley Snowgren, Adalyn Snowgren, and Rory Philips. 

West Burlington/Notre Dame had Kaitlyn Kipp snatch the bronze medal time by five-tenths of a second over her teammate Hannah Ritter, clocking a run of 22 minutes and 22.1 seconds. Kenna Small of Wapello clinched 14th place. Ashlyn Bender of Winfield-Mt. Union turned in a time of 30 minutes and 26 seconds, while New London’s Irelynn Kelly finished in 31 minutes and 29 seconds.

For the girls’ Class 3A and Class 4A race, Mt. Pleasant’s Avery Fedler collected the best time of night with a mark of 19 minutes and 11 seconds, defeating two runners ranked in the top 20 from the Southeast Conference, while Quintrie Lee claimed 5th place with a time of 20 minutes and 56 seconds, which was eight-tenths of a second from knocking off Iris Dahl of Washington. Alex Jo Steward finished in 19th place for Fairfield. 

New London will head to Oskaloosa for a meet on Tuesday, September 16th.

Wapello will compete in the English Valleys Invite on Tuesday.

Central Lee will host their Invitational on Tuesday with Winfield-Mt. Union and Van Buren County competing. 

WACO, Mt. Pleasant, Mediapolis, Danville, Fairfield, Holy Trinity Catholic, and West Burlington/Notre Dame will travel to Rodeo Park Trail for the Timm Lamb Invitational on Thursday, September 18th.

High School Football

Mt. Pleasant gets back to work as they stay on the road to face off against Oskaloosa tonight at 7:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 7:15 pm. Head coach John Bowlin knows this will be a tough matchup, but that’s what makes a team better,

“… And, you know, they will be a different team for sure. And they’re going to run the ball, they’re going to establish the run against us. I think their line will give us a give us a fight all night. So it’s going to be a battle for four quarters. But again, our goal is to come out and you know be dominant and continue that and just start from the first quarter to the last. And you know you’re going to have ups and downs. But if we just keep the pressure on, keep the gas on good things are gonna happen.”

Wapello will square off against Pekin at 7 pm on the road tonight. 

Van Buren County will face off against Cardinal tonight at 7 pm at home.

WACO will host HLV/TC tonight at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will hit the road to square off against English Valleys tonight at 7 pm. 

West Burlington/Notre Dame will compete on the road against Keokuk tonight at 7:30 pm.

Mediapolis will head to Fairfield tonight at 7:30 pm.

Danville will host Columbus tonight at 7 pm.

Central Lee will make the trip to Fort Madison tonight at 7:30 pm.

High School Girls’ Tennis

Mt. Pleasant will celebrate their senior night on Monday, September 15th, against Davis County.

Fairfield prepares to host the Class 1A Region 6 Individual tournament on Wednesday, September 17th.

Southeastern Community College

The volleyball team defeated North Iowa Area Community College last night in five sets, winning the tiebreaker 15-12. The Blackhawks will travel to Northeast Community College on Tuesday, September 16th, at 6:30 pm.

The women’s soccer team will stay at home to square off against State Fair Community College at 1 pm tomorrow, September 13th.

The men’s soccer team will take on State Fair Community College at 3 pm tomorrow.

College Football

#14 Iowa State will travel to Arkansas State tomorrow, September 13th, at 3 pm. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will have the call.

Iowa is hoping for a get-right game against UMass tomorrow at home with kickoff at 6:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM will be on the call.

1930 – Brooklyn catcher Al López hits major league’s last recorded bounce home run as the National League did not adopt the ground-rule double until 1931.

2004 – The Detroit Lions beat the Chicago Bears 20-16 at Soldier Field to snap their then- NFL record 24-game road losing streak. The Lions later reset the record at 26 in 2010.
