Utility Bill Scam

Utilities United Against Scams is cautioning consumers to be aware of a scam involving your energy bill.  A caller states that you have overpaid your utility bill, and you will be asked to provide banking or credit card information to receive a refund.  That is a scam.  In reality, your utility company will credit any overpayment to your account or mail you a check.  They will not request your banking information to issue the refund.

24-hour Rain Totals & NWS: Storm Activity

Mt. Pleasant checked in with .46 inches of rain in the past 24 hours with totals varying throughout the Henry County area. Southeast Iowa may see thunderstorm activity at least through Tuesday of next week.  Sunday night into Monday carries an 80% chance of thunderstorm and heavy rain activity. The National Weather Service reports that the strong to severe storms  produce damaging hail, strong winds, heavy downpouring rain, and frequent lightning. Uncertainty remains regarding coverage and exact timing of storms because previous day activity will impact how storms evolve the following day. KILJ Radio will provide the latest weather information.

Today is Armed Forces Day: Honoring Active Duty Service Members

Today, Saturday May 16, 2026, is Armed Forces Day and is recognized annually on the third Saturday in May.  Armed Forces Day especially honors current active duty service members, according to the American Legion Library & Museum.  Memorial Day especially honors deceased military veterans and those who lost their lives in action.  Veterans Day honors living veterans.

President Harry Truman first instituted Armed Forces Day in 1950. When separate departments for each military service branch were placed under the new Department of Defense in the late 1940s, it was decided that there should be one all-inclusive service day to recognize the uniformed branches and those who serve in them. President John F. Kennedy officially made it a national holiday in 1961. (American Legion Website)

U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) reported that four Iowa airports, including the Burlington / Southeast Iowa Regional Airport, will receive a total of $15.75 million to modernize and expand terminal areas and infrastructure. The funding comes from the USDOT’s Airport Terminal Program.  U. S. Senator Charles Grassley backed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act which played a role in the awarding of the funding.

Iowans in the Des Moines, Cedar Rapids-Iowa City, Burlington, and Fort Dodge areas will benefit from the  funding for much-needed airport improvement projects.

  • Des Moines International Airport (DSM): $6 million to expand and reconstruct the existing passenger terminal, including up to four additional gates to increase energy efficiency and enhance the family travel experience.
  • Cedar Rapids / Eastern Iowa Airport (CID): $6 million to improve the baggage handling system due to an increase in demand.
